    Air Race report from Monday’s qualifying at Stead Airport STEAD (Sept. 14) – Today began two and a half days of qualifying for those wishing to compete in this year’s edition of the Reno National Championship Air Races. It’s the only event on the planet where pilots race each other in six different classes. The stars of the show are the Unlimiteds and these aircraft have legions of fans.   • WOMEN AT THE AIR RACES

    STEAD (Sept. 12) – Women are part of every racing team at the air races however, with few exceptions, few are pilots. But one team, Lewis Air Legends (www.lewisairlegends.com) , has two women helping on the mechanical side of the operation. One has her A&P (Airframe and Power Plant.) certification while the other is working on earning hers. And both are volunteers working with the crew of La Patrona, an Unlimited F7F Tigercat owned by Rod Lewis.   • FAST TUESDAY AT THE AIR RACES

    STEAD (Sept. 9) – With Monday’s second session of Unlimited qualifying canceled the heavy iron brigade got busy Tuesday morning. This gave them some insurance incase some problems had to be settled or in one case a racing engine installed.   Everyone lined up in the first qualifying session and two of the most anticipated runs were by defending champion Steven Hinton in Voodoo and Stewart Dawson flying Rare Bear.   • TRAGEDY AT THE AIR RACES

    Stead Airport (Monday, Sept. 8) Tragedy struck the Reno National Championship Air Races this afternoon. During a qualifying session for the Sport Class there was a fatal crash. At the north end of the course the aircraft flown by Lee Behel suffered some kind of failure and went down. He was the president of the class and one of its founders. Behel’s racer was powered by a Chevy small block V-8 modified for aviation use. Behel is listed as retired and was a pilot for many years with the Nevada Air National Guard when they flew RF-4C Phantoms. And he
