RENO (March 22) – Each spring Al Lockett hosts a show that combines almost everything one that loves the outdoors could ask for. Everything from boats, landscaping, recreation and a whole lot more. But part of the show is devoted to both off-road and motorsports, which was a bit light this time around. However one local track, Fernley 95A Speedway, had a booth and brought a brand new modified to display. “I think it’s going to be the best year we’ve had since Dan Simpson has had the track,” track manager Matt Ramthun said. “We’re getting a lot of

SHOOT OUT ENDS 95A’S SEASON
FERNLEY (Oct. 12) – The Fernley 95A Speedway ended its season with a two-day marathon at the annual shoot out. Over 100 racers were on hand and Sunday afternoon ended with the IMCA Modified feature that closed the track’s year. And the California driver that won was actually using the race to shake down a new motor. A decision that turned out to be profitable as he collected the winner’s prize. “We’re down here testing this crate for Vegas, so I think we picked the right track to do that,” Paul Stone said after post race tech. “It’s the

NEW PRO STOCK ASSOCIATION
FERNLEY (Oct. 12) — Over the past several years the once vibrant Pro Stock Class has been diminished to almost nothing at some tracks or disappeared at others. During the Fernley 95A Speedway’s two-day shootout, John Feyder and Gordy Russell, along with Travis Petersen announced a new effort to revive the class. “Gordy and I were sitting in the office and talking about why the pro stocks were going down and what we can do to bring them back,” Feyder said. “We got to thinking, ‘you know we should have special races for these pros stocks.’ And rather than

CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT AT 95A
FERNLEY (Oct. 4) The end of a track’s season is when class championships are finally secured. Even if the title has been secured that final points race is when a driver can improve their standings or make darn sure a title is their’s. Saturday was Fernley 95A Speedway’s title night was where the class champions capped their year with an evening of hard racing. But the race of the night was the one that ended the season. After narrowly winning the IMCA main the winner and class champion Cory Sample said, “You know we didn’t even have to show

MARNN AT TOULAN + WEEK’S PREVIEW
TOULON (Sept. 28) — Rain this weekend canceled one event but another soldiered on and ran its event. Due to the conditions at the track and in the pits Rattlesnake Raceway postponed its annual Dirt Track Championship, a two-day event that brings the track’s season to a close. Yet only about 60 miles away MRANN and District 36 ran their annual combined event, The Wild Horse and Wild Pony Enduro. Unlike those racing on ovals, desert racers will compete in just about any type of weather. Saturday’s rain, plus the cool weather made perfect conditions on Sunday as there was

95A SEASON WINDS DOWN
FERNLEY (SEPT. 20) With only two races left in its points season things are heating up at the Fernley 95A Speedway. It’s go time for any driver that wants to win a championship or improve their points position. Many times in racing patience plays an important part as does the knowledge of when to go, when to just kind of hang back and how a dirt track can change during a 30-lap race. When the green waved Don Childs was first on point with Robert Miller giving chase. Eventually Miller would take the point but behind him both Cory

RACING CALENDAR, SEPT 19 TO 21
This weekend’s racing calendar has some changes as well as one track ending its season. Lovelock Speedway was supposed to end its season this Saturday but the track canceled the final two events on its calendar. And the Northern Nevada Kart Club had to cancel the “Clone Wars,” event as there were not enough entries to cover expenses. On Friday, starting at 6 p.m. Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon will host its final point race of the season. The car classes are featured and there will be a demolition derby that will probably close the show. Closer to home Fernley

I-80 CHALLENGE AT 95A SPEEDWAY
Fernley (Aug. 28/29) – Highlighting the Labor Day weekend was the first visit of the I-80 Challenge series to the 95A Speedway. This meant two nights of high speed IMCA Modified action and both winners also used it as a tune up for the Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa. Both IMCA features were hard fought battles and a driver from Battle Mountain claimed Saturday’s victory. “We came over here as Cory (Sample) is going to haul my car to the Super Nationals. So I decided I’d race my son’s car as it’s a 2013 Addiction chassis,” Randy Artz said

I-80 CHALLENGE RAMPS UP IMCA RACING
LOVELOCK — During the Frontier Days races this reporter had a chance to interview the series promoter Mike Scott, who is also the president of the Winnemucca Regional Raceway. He’s the force behind this new series that’s causing big jumps in car counts at Northern Nevada tracks. Although the I=8- series is new, its history goes back several years. “Dan Fitzgerald came up with the idea about 10-years ago but it never really took off,” Scott said. So I brought it up a few years back. This was when the Wild West Tour had run its course here.” A
