FERNLEY (Oct. 4) The end of a track’s season is when class championships are finally secured. Even if the title has been secured that final points race is when a driver can improve their standings or make darn sure a title is their’s. Saturday was Fernley 95A Speedway’s title night was where the class champions capped their year with an evening of hard racing. But the race of the night was the one that ended the season. After narrowly winning the IMCA main the winner and class champion Cory Sample said, “You know we didn’t even have to show

MARNN AT TOULAN + WEEK’S PREVIEW
TOULON (Sept. 28) — Rain this weekend canceled one event but another soldiered on and ran its event. Due to the conditions at the track and in the pits Rattlesnake Raceway postponed its annual Dirt Track Championship, a two-day event that brings the track’s season to a close. Yet only about 60 miles away MRANN and District 36 ran their annual combined event, The Wild Horse and Wild Pony Enduro. Unlike those racing on ovals, desert racers will compete in just about any type of weather. Saturday’s rain, plus the cool weather made perfect conditions on Sunday as there was

95A SEASON WINDS DOWN
FERNLEY (SEPT. 20) With only two races left in its points season things are heating up at the Fernley 95A Speedway. It’s go time for any driver that wants to win a championship or improve their points position. Many times in racing patience plays an important part as does the knowledge of when to go, when to just kind of hang back and how a dirt track can change during a 30-lap race. When the green waved Don Childs was first on point with Robert Miller giving chase. Eventually Miller would take the point but behind him both Cory

RATTLESNAKE’S CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT
FALLON (Sept. 19) — This weekend marked the end of a long year for those that compete at Rattlesnake Raceway. It was the final points race of the season when a driver’s efforts can win a class championship, a better points position or go for naught. It was all on the line the Friday night and everyone wanted to bring their A game to the show. While the IMCA A Mods are usually the stars of the show they were upstaged by the more humble Hobby Stocks. In fact that division staged the race of the night during their

RACING CALENDAR, SEPT 19 TO 21
This weekend’s racing calendar has some changes as well as one track ending its season. Lovelock Speedway was supposed to end its season this Saturday but the track canceled the final two events on its calendar. And the Northern Nevada Kart Club had to cancel the “Clone Wars,” event as there were not enough entries to cover expenses. On Friday, starting at 6 p.m. Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon will host its final point race of the season. The car classes are featured and there will be a demolition derby that will probably close the show. Closer to home Fernley

SOME TITLES CLINCHED AT NNKC
STEAD (Sept. 6) – With two races left on the schedule it’s time for drivers to seal the deal in their championship drives. So the Northern Nevada Kart Club’s latest races, which was a rare Saturday event, was very important. At least three drivers clichéd championships and one of them notched crowns in two different classes. After winning the 125 Stock Moto main Mark Nason said, “My set up landed spot on again today. Here again, set up through the season from Mitch Kennedy. M y competitors have gotten faster as we were all within 3/10ths

VETERAN WANTS BOMBERS BACK
Glen Plake is known around the world for his exploits on skies. But he’s also a long time fan of racing and drives an IMCA Modified when he’s home from Europe. At last week’s I-80 Challenge event, at the Fernley 95A Speedway, Plake shared his opinions of a class he feels the local oval track community needs. For the past couple of years he’s been talking about breathing new life into the defunct Bomber Class. A division he feels would increase the car counts as well as put more fans into the stands. “I know from my history, that’s how

I-80 CHALLENGE AT 95A SPEEDWAY
Fernley (Aug. 28/29) – Highlighting the Labor Day weekend was the first visit of the I-80 Challenge series to the 95A Speedway. This meant two nights of high speed IMCA Modified action and both winners also used it as a tune up for the Super Nationals in Boone, Iowa. Both IMCA features were hard fought battles and a driver from Battle Mountain claimed Saturday’s victory. “We came over here as Cory (Sample) is going to haul my car to the Super Nationals. So I decided I’d race my son’s car as it’s a 2013 Addiction chassis,” Randy Artz said

NIEMAN WINS QUINCY FAIR RACE
Quincy, CA (Aug. 17) – American Valley Speedway hosted its annual Fair Races on Sunday. It’s part of the Plumas County Fair, an event that for some marks the end of summer as school is starting soon. As usual there was a good field of IMCA Modifieds as well as Hobby Stocks and Mini Stocks. But for a Quincy native, it was his night to shine. “He (Olschowka) was on the outside of me the whole time,” Chase Nieman said after climbing out of his car. “There’s very little on the bottom of the track and if you get

I-80 CHALLENGE RAMPS UP IMCA RACING
LOVELOCK — During the Frontier Days races this reporter had a chance to interview the series promoter Mike Scott, who is also the president of the Winnemucca Regional Raceway. He’s the force behind this new series that’s causing big jumps in car counts at Northern Nevada tracks. Although the I=8- series is new, its history goes back several years. “Dan Fitzgerald came up with the idea about 10-years ago but it never really took off,” Scott said. So I brought it up a few years back. This was when the Wild West Tour had run its course here.” A

NNKC LIGHTS UP THE NIGHT
STEAD (Aug. 16) – Once a year the Northern Nevada Kart Club honors one of its founders, the later Rick Jerome, with the annual night race. While most of the season is run in daylight this event begins in the late afternoon and ends under the lights. To celebrate this once a year happening many racers festoon their karts with lights, in the wheels, on the trim and one even had headlights. And it brings out a fairly large crowd of competitors. After suffering two dnf’s this season one veteran driver, that races in both shifter classes, came with

Racing Calendar for the Week of August 16/17
• This week’s racing calendar features a unique form of motorsport, Trials. It’s not about speed but the rider’s control as they negotiate various obstacles. The goal is earning the least amount of penalty points when a rider completes what ever course they are on. Put a foot on the ground or get stopped and a point is added, so the one with the lowest points is the winner. The Boreal Ridge Trials will be staged at the Boreal Ski Resort, just west of Donner Summit on I-80. Beginners and vintage bikes competing on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

SPEED AND CARNAGE AT FRONTIER DAYS RACES
LOVELOCK (Aug 1-2)- The Frontier Day races at the Lovelock Speedway can be wild affairs. The two-day event highlights the annual celebration of the town’s founding and the action at the speedway is part of the festivities. This year the races had an added twist as the new I-80 Challenge Series was there to stage its fourth round. The result was two days of hard, fast racing and on Saturday more than a bit of carnage. When the dust settled a veteran driver from Winnemucca and an young lion out of Fallon had swept their respective classes. After Saturday’s
