  • PREVIEW DECEMBER 18-21

With Christmas and New Year’s fast approaching the amount of racing is slim to none except for what on the tube. But there are two events that are motorsport related happening this weekend.   RMS is having its annual Christmas Part on Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. A good chance to hang out with the crew, see what’s new and kids can get a free picture with Santa. After a six-year absence Bishop Motocross has put life back into the course located at the Tri-County Fairground. This Saturday they’ll host the final practice session of the year and

  • RPM WORKSHOP VISITS RENO

RENO (Dec. 4/5) – The annual western meeting of the 42nd annual RPM Workshops visited the Eldorado Hotel and Casino. The Work Shop brings short track promoters from across the country for two days in intensive seminars and meetings.   This year RPM boss Stewart Doty was assisted by Nadine Strauss, who used to promote Lakeport Speedway with her husband and now is involved with the North State Modified Tour. The workshop actually began Wednesday evening with a visit to the Harrah’s National Auto Museum catered by the Eldorado. On Thursday the meetings began with Doty welcoming everyone, complimenting the

  • WEEKEND PREVIEW – NOV.20 – 23

This weekend is championship time for two different series, one local and the other international. Both events wind up racing for this year. • East of Fernley the desert racers of MRANN square off for their final event. The pits are located on the south side of I-80 off the Nightingale exit. Titles will be clinched while other racers are riding to secure their places in the points. The action begins Saturday with a 45-minute race for the Pee Wee riders. Then, at 11 a.m. the Mini Bikes/Women/Vintage and Bombers begin their 90-minute event. Sunday is for the big bikes

  • RACING CALENDAR – NOV. 13 – 16

This weekend has something for about every type of racing fan and two series determine their championships by Sunday evening.   NASCAR visits Homestead, Florida for the final race of its season and there are two championships yet to be decided. Things begin Friday when Fox Sports 1, at 5 p.m., broadcasts the Camping World Truck series. That title is on the line with Matt Crafton having a chance to win his second crown in as many years. Last weekend in Phoenix,  Chase Elliott claimed the Nationwide title and he joined a select few sons and dads that have won

  • SPARKS DRIVER WINS ULTRA 4 TITLE

SPARKS, NV — Winning a championship in racing is never easy. It takes commitment, a whole lot of effort and support from people that help the driver as well as sponsors. And even then winning a title can be illusive.   However when the recent Nitto Tire Ultra 4 Nationals ended at Wild West Motorsport Park, one local, Dave Schneider, achieved this goal and won the Legends class championship. And he probably had the shortest commute home, Spanish Springs, as most of his fellow competitors towed in from other states. His involvement with off road sports began 15-years ago when

  • RACING CALENDAR – NOV. 7 – 9

While there is no racing in our region this weekend this is plenty to watch on TV.   NASCAR sets up shop in Phoenix and starts things rolling at 5:30 p.m. as Fox Sports One broadcasts the Camping World Truck Series race. Then at 1 p.m. Saturday the Nationwide series takes to the track on ESPN. Then at noon Sunday, ESPN broadcast the Sprint Cup race and who knows if this one will end in a pit road brawl after the checkered flag waves. For the drivers it’s a critical time as only four of the top eight will have

  • GANG ROCKS THE SANDBOX

FERNLEY (Oct. 26) — Things looked pretty grim for the local motocross scene when SMRA pulled the plug on its fall series late this summer. However the Reno chapter of the Over the Hill Gang had other ideas.   After a planned five-race series had to be scrubbed the club gathered its forces and staged a one-off race this weekend at the Sandbox, or Fernley Lions Motocross Track as its officially known. “We decided it was time to have a race,” said Layne Kolbet, president of the OTHG chapter. Saturday’s practice session was held during what seemed like a hurricane

  • WILD WEST HOSTS ULTRA 4’s

MUSTANG (Oct. 18) — The Wild West Motorsports Park hosted another first time visitor this weekend. The Nitto Tires Ultra 4 National Championship series pulled into the park on Friday for practice and qualifying during its season ending event.   The drivers found a cross between brutal rock sections as well as high-speed areas and some fast corners. Its a mix that tested all of a driver’s talents as well as their machines. For one driver, Loren Healy from Farmington New Mexico, the day was his time to seal the deal on a perfect season and win the national championship.

  • ULTRA 4 NATIONALS READY TO ROCK

MUSTANG (Oct. 17) — Practice and qualifying made for an action packed Friday at the Wild West Motorsports Park east of Sparks. With the last round of the Nitto Ultra4 National Championship being run Saturday time was of the essence for those drivers looking to either clinch a championship or improve their points position. Practice was done using the long course, which includes a very long, steep climb up a new section of the track. Qualifying was on the short track that omitted the big new hill section. And challenging, no matter which course is used, would be an

  • SHOOT OUT ENDS 95A’S SEASON

FERNLEY (Oct. 12) – The Fernley 95A Speedway ended its season with a two-day marathon at the annual shoot out. Over 100 racers were on hand and Sunday afternoon ended with the IMCA Modified feature that closed the track’s year.   And the California driver that won was actually using the race to shake down a new motor. A decision that turned out to be profitable as he collected the winner’s prize. “We’re down here testing this crate for Vegas, so I think we picked the right track to do that,” Paul Stone said after post race tech. “It’s the

  • NEW PRO STOCK ASSOCIATION

FERNLEY (Oct. 12) — Over the past several years the once vibrant Pro Stock Class has been diminished to almost nothing at some tracks or disappeared at others. During the Fernley 95A Speedway’s two-day shootout, John Feyder and Gordy Russell, along with Travis Petersen announced a new effort to revive the class.   “Gordy and I were sitting in the office and talking about why the pro stocks were going down and what we can do to bring them back,” Feyder said. “We got to thinking, ‘you know we should have special races for these pros stocks.’ And rather than

  • DIRT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

FALLON (Oct. 4/5) — Rattlesnake Raceway ended its season with the annual Dirt Track Championships. However this year there was an unforeseen twist; rain canceled the scheduled date so the event was moved to the next weekend.   Sadly many cars that planned to be there weren’t. Despite this the event went on as planned and the drivers put on a display of hard racing. “I had to avoid a lot of stuff as the track went from real good to a real slick, slick, slick track,” Carl Barlow said after winning Saturday’s Hobby Stock main. “The car was real
