    Air Race report for Wednesday had two changes due to late qualifying and everyone at Stead Airport had to deal with a windy and cool to cold day. STEAD – Competitors, crews, volunteers and spectators were greeted by blustery, cool to cold weather today. Still the day went on with some revisions as the National Championship Air Races got underway. First up in the morning was the final time for racers to qualify or post better times.     Formula 1 air racing is not international and one man, with a lot of help from the teams, is working to expand it.     Air Race report from Monday’s qualifying at Stead Airport STEAD (Sept. 14) – Today began two and a half days of qualifying for those wishing to compete in this year’s edition of the Reno National Championship Air Races. It’s the only event on the planet where pilots race each other in six different classes. The stars of the show are the Unlimiteds and these aircraft have legions of fans.   • PRS FLIES INTO STEAD

    PRS Flies into Stead to train rookies and give veterans practice time. STEAD (June 18) – This week the annual Pylon Racing Seminar flew into the airport here. The event is where experienced pilots can hone their racing skills but for the rookies, and those that haven’t raced in a while, it’s mandatory if they want to compete in the air races.   Wednesday was classroom time for the rookies while the certified pilots could use the various courses to practice and get more seat time.   After completing the morning briefing for all pilots Air Boss Greg Pierce said,

  • CHAMPIONSHIP DAY AT THE AIR RACES

      STEAD AIRPORT (Sept. 14) – For the 51st year the sky north of Reno was filled with the sound of planes racing each other.     STEAD (Sept. 12) – Women are part of every racing team at the air races however, with few exceptions, few are pilots. But one team, Lewis Air Legends (www.lewisairlegends.com) , has two women helping on the mechanical side of the operation.     STEAD (Sept. 9) – With Monday’s second session of Unlimited qualifying canceled the heavy iron brigade got busy Tuesday morning. This gave them some insurance incase some problems had to be settled or in one case a racing engine installed.   Everyone lined up in the first qualifying session and two of the most anticipated runs were by defending champion Steven Hinton in Voodoo and Stewart Dawson flying Rare Bear.   • TRAGEDY AT THE AIR RACES

    Stead Airport (Monday, Sept. 8) Tragedy struck the Reno National Championship Air Races this afternoon. During a qualifying session for the Sport Class there was a fatal crash. At the north end of the course the aircraft flown by Lee Behel suffered some kind of failure and went down. He was the president of the class and one of its founders. Behel’s racer was powered by a Chevy small block V-8 modified for aviation use. Behel is listed as retired and was a pilot for many years with the Nevada Air National Guard when they flew RF-4C Phantoms. And he
