NEW MOTOCROSS TRACK IN FERNLEY

FERNLEY, NV (Feb. 29) – After 95A Speedway was sold late last year part of the property is now home to a new motocross track. It’s one of the first items the new owners are working on and the facility has a new name; 95 Motor Sports Complex.

During Saturday’s motocross  practice this reporter had an opportunity to interview co-owners Sam Marson and Eric Steinbrecher.

Asked why he purchased the property Marson was very clear on his reasons.

“I live here so I’ve been doing the majority of the build,” Marson said. “Eric lives in California so he comes up when he can and helps out.”

Marson reflected on how the motocross scene in Northern Nevada had diminished over the years since he was growing up. He listed several tracks that no longer exist like Carson City, Stead, Exit 28, a short lived one in Gardnerville and Honey Lake that is hardly used these days.

“In the last three years my son started racing motorcycles and what I quickly realized is we have no tracks up here that are run and managed throughout the year,” he said. “We have one track here in Fernley that they prep a few times a year but it’s not something we can train on week in and week out. So I saw there was a huge need for it in this area as we have excellent rider counts but no place to go and train.”

Over the past few years he got very tired of driving over to California for a two or three-day periods. Otherwise his son couldn’t train as much as those the live over there.

“So I’ve been looking at land and an opportunity for well over a year. About five months ago I heard about this through a friend and I met the previous owner. We put a deal together and we have a motocross track now,” he said.

Then Steinbrecher said, “My son’s a motocross racer too. Sam and I met about three years ago at a track and we hit it off. Basically Sam wanted a partner and he knows I’m pretty easy going so he asked me to come in with him, buy the property and the rest is history.”

One thing Marson made clear is that they don’t own the road course although the access road is shared by both properties. Dan Shore owns that and apparently he’s getting ready for a full l repave this summer so there maybe in the future some exciting things will happen there.

Now that the sale has been complete and the first motocross track operational Marson explained some of his plans for the future.

“This is 95 Motor Sports Complex as it’s not just a motocross track as we have the circle track that’s been here for 20 plus years,” he said. “We’re going to continue running and managing the circle track and we have one motocross track done. We’re working on a UTV track right now and getting ready to begin a second motocross track as well as a Supercross track on the infield of the circle track.”

After buying the facility Marson explained they changed the schedule that had been posted. That schedule came as a surprise to him but the issue has been addressed.

Looking he said, “We’re going to be running practice, we don’t have a formal schedule as we’re kind of playing it by ear with the weather right now. In the next month or so we’re going to have a schedule out as we’re trying to wait and see what the other organizations schedules are so we can work around them as we don’t want to compete with the other Fernley track and other series.

“We came to strengthen the Northern Nevada scene so we want to be good team players and not step on each other’s dates as much as we can.”

He hopes to have a schedule out in the next month but won’t start running races until summertime. There have been some talks with BBMX but as of now no agreements. That is something to be dealt with in the future.

“We have a lot of infrastructure we’re investing in so we want to continue improving the site and when we’re ready we’ll start a summer series,” he said.

Then Steinbrecher said, “I’m in Orangeville, California which is just outside of Sacramento so we’re about 30 minutes east of there. The thing about this track is that it’s really technical, not like a typical outdoor motorcross track. You’ve got to be really on your game to ride it so for me it’s safe as it’s a little bit slower as a track. So it’s going to be good for the kids to come out here and ride.”

Right now the motocross track is bare bones although there are concessions and portable restrooms. Marson mentioned that he hoping to install some landscaping at both tracks, motocross and oval. Also they’ve got much better equipment for track preparation.

Their goal is to improve the facility and making it something that will attract both sponsors as well as racers. They are also working on marketing plans and other things as well.

Unfortunately due to the storm that blew through our area Saturday evening the Sunday practice session had to be canceled.

• Despite the very light snow Reno Cars & Coffee had it’s first of the month meet Sunday. As usual there were mix of cars although the overall count was down there were more than enough cars on hand.
