ARENACROSS RETURNS TO RENO

RENO, NV (Feb. 8) – Once again the Reno Livestock Events Center echoed with the sounds of Arenacross. The series is now Kicker AMA Arenacross presented by Lucas Oil and it has returned to the Biggest Little City.

Unlike the previous series the racing card had all the classes including both pro divisions. The afternoon was for heats and if a class had too few entries that main was run before the evening show.

Every night before the show began a honor guard from the Spanish Springs High School Army JROTC presented the colors.

Each night the colors were presented by a quartet from the Spanish Springs High School Army JROTC. After that it was time to go racing.

For one North Carolina racer it was a great two days as he swept three out of the four pro events, which included both Saturday races.

After the Saturday 450 Pro race ended the winners were interviewed. Winner Kyle Peters (38) in the center with runner up Jace Own (1) on the left and third place Kyle Bitterman on the right.

“I was able to sweep tonight, didn’t have the greatest start but won my first heat and my other one so really had to put my head down,”Kyle Peters said. “There’s a lot of good competition here and they made me work for it. Track is awesome, ruts are starting to form and it makes for some really good racing.”

When the 450 Pro main began Saturday Peters emerged from where the track wove around the two pro jumps. Not far behind his teammate Jace Owen was closing fast.

However Peters was not to be denied and put a gap between himself and Owen, who ended up second ahead of Kyle Bitterman.

After the victory interviews with the announcer it was time to break out the champagne and spray each other down. This happened after the mechanics got their motorcycles out of harm’s way.

After each 450 main the top three got to spray each other down.

A little earlier the 250 Pro main was run and once again Peters was on point with Owne giving chase. At the end of the long section of whoops Owen went down in the 180-degree turn that caught several riders during the weekend.

This allowed Kyle Bitterman to grab second with Gared Steinke taking third. At the end Owen wound up fourth.

In the Saturday 250 Pro main Kyle Peters (38) is being chased by Kyle Bitterman.

When the pro races started they wound around two jumps then after that they’d get some really big air flying over these two jumps.

Things were a little different during Friday’s evening show. When the gate dropped to start the 250 Pro main Owen jumped into the lead with Peters giving chase with Bitterman third. They finished in that order.

Jace flies high on his way to winning Friday’s250 Pro race.

When the 450 Pro main began Owen was on point with Peters giving chase. Later in the race these two came upon some lap traffic and Peters used that to make the pass for the lead and his first of three victories.

Kyle Peters on his way to winning Friday’s 450 Pro race.

Owen had to settle for the runner up spot followed by Oregon rider Gared Steinke.

Asked about the race Peters said,” The race was good had my team mate Jace in front of me. He was riding really, really good and we got into some lap traffic where I was able to make the pass and hold him off for the win. It was a great race.”

Of course the largest crowd of fans was on Saturday although Friday’s wasn’t that bad either. They not only were cheering for the pros but for the younger riders as well including the ones that flew over the finish line making that jump a double.

During a break in the show there was a fans “handle bar race.” Each contestant had to hold a handlebar in both hands while running.

The women were given a head start as they began in the whoops while the men started their race at the top of the second jump.

On Friday almost everyone crashed in the whoop section and one of the men won the race. On Saturday one of the women left everyone in her dust winning the race. When asked how she did so well her answer was that the others were slow.

While many of the pros came from the east coast there were a bunch of locals competing in the supporting races and some of them won their races.

There were some double winners Saturday like Byren Spear, who scored victories in both 51cc Limited 7&8 and in the open races. Lux Turner scored a double Saturday when he won in Supermini then in the 250 Novice race as he’s moving up to the big bikes.

Another area rider scoring a double was Casey Carmichael, who won in 250 Intermediate as well as Schoolboy while Ian Naccarato topped both the Vet classes. Tanner Clark won in 450 Beginner as well as the Beginner class.

Scoring one for the girls Lala Turner won in 85cc 9-12 but was claimed by the whoops as she crashed out of the 9-15 class Saturday. In fact after her win she was called to the finish line where the announcer interviewed her.

There will be TV coverage of at last the pro races on Fox Sports 2. The program will air at 9 a.m. on March 7th. Later the program will air again on Sunday, March 25 at 8:30 Pacific Daylight Time.

Once racing ended Saturday promoter Tod Hammock was asked how the weekend went.

Promoter Tod Hammock stands by the announcing stand before Saturday’s evening show began.

He said, “It was absolutely spectacular and both nights the crowd was incredible and the racing, well everybody just got into it. It really was an amazing weekend and we’re going to come back sometime in late February 2021.”

He also mentioned that his group has bought Endurocross and they are working on building that series as well.

“We’re trying to find a date and we do want to bring Endurocross back here as well. We think it’s going to be in 2021 before we can get an open date here in Reno,” he said.

REPORTER’S NOTE: There is a photo gallery after the results with most of the pros and Saturday winners.
