CAR CLUBS IN RENO JOIN FOR TOY DRIVES

RENO, NV (DEC. 1) – Despite the snow and rain two car clubs joined forces to help disadvantaged youngsters through the Children’s Cabinet. The clubs were Reno Cars and Coffee as well as the Old Slammers Club of Reno.

The day started when Reno Cars and Coffee has its usual first weekend of the month meet at the Keitzke Starbucks. This time it was the 4th annual Toy Drive for the club.

Due to the snow only a few hardcore members showed up but they brought unwrapped toys to be donated later.

Standing in the morning snow storm Reno Cars & Coffee boss Lance Freitas stands with his car.

Asked about the weather Reno Cars & Coffee boss Lance Freitas said, “We’ve been very fortunate in the past years as it’s been very sunny, nice and warm but this year, not so much. That’s why only the hard core showed up.”

Those there also brought toys to be donated later.

“We’re partners with the Old Slammers VW Club as they are doing their Toy Drop at Northtowne. They’ve been doing it for several years and we partner with them to we drop off all the toys.”

One of those in attendance noticed only one Subaru was present and everyone got a laugh out of that. Usually when the weather is good several will be on hand.

Finally it was time and those that could headed up to the Northowne shopping center where the Old Slammers had some VW buses including one the toys would be loaded into.

Eduardo Hernandez explained how Old Slammers got started and its involvement with the Children’s Cabinet.

Asked about how the Old Slammers started, club member Eduardo Hernandez said, “It was a group of friends in the beginning as they had the same mind, same love for Volkswagens and that’s how it started.”

After that he explained how the club got involved with the Children’s Cabinet.

“Tara, a member of the Old Slammers connected us with the Children’s Cabinet,” Hennandez said. “It’s been amazing all these years as a lot of people have come with wonderful attitudes for the kids. It’s awesome.”

While this was the 4th annual Toy Run for Reno Cars & Coffee it was the 7th annual Toys For Kids for the Old Slammers of Reno.

Representing the Children’s Cabinet of Reno was Jennifer Zimmerman and she explained what this group does.

“So the Children’s Cabinet helps about 11,000 a year. What we do is that we help those that are in need for help paying for child care, parenting classes, those looking for quality child care in our area, those that are looking for family counseling as we do free family counseling,” she said. “We also have the Redfield Alternative High School at our Sinclair location.

“And we also do work alternative programs for youths that are either experiencing difficulty with the normal school system and/or have had some involvement with law enforcement and have gone through juvenile services. So we do counseling for them, case management and work experience programs.”

The Toys For Kids also has a place in their program to help people in the community.

“So what they are doing today is to help benefit our community toy table that we hold every year,” she said. “This year it’s going to be on December 18th and it’s going to help families in need that were unable to participate in any other holiday program to help supplement or get some toys for their families for Christmas.”

Despite the snowy beginning to the day the Toy Drop at the Old Slammers location only had a bit of rain. A vintage VW bus was loaded with the toys and they have been delivered to the Children’s Cabinet to help brighten a child’s Christmas.

One of the children present was examining the gifts that will be presented to the Children’s Cabinet by the Old Slammers of Reno.

Another example of how two car clubs join forces to help those in our area.
