FERNLEY, NV (Oct. 20) – Motocross racers returned to the “Fern,” or the Sandbox as Battle Born MX staged the 10th round of its season. Hosting the event was the Old Timers Motorcycle club.
It was a varied day as the gates would sometimes be virtually full or have a bunch of empty spaces. No matter the racing was as hard as ever and as usual the second moto was the money round for riders.
When the second moto started for the 250/450 Intermediate and 25+ Open there were only four riders but one of them Casey Carmichael was way behind the other three at the start.
After that the chase was on although early leader Tristen Mathisen fell early in the first lap putting Carmichael a distant third.
As the laps wound down Carmichael caught and picked off Kai Kapahee then set his sights on the leader, Tim P. Stone. Soon however Carmichael took over the lead and left everyone in his dust.
“I just wanted to try something new, try to challenge myself and let them get ahead so I could have some fun,” he said. “The track is pretty good, getting some gnarly square edges but just makes it so you choose better lines and makes it a little harder.”
Then he thanked TP Racing Team, his parents, grandmother as well as everyone else that helps him.
The largest field was in the 250/450 Beginner Class. When the gate dropped 29 riders roared off to the first turn.
Up front Seth Clark, who won the first moto was on point with Justin Graves giving chase. This time Ian Breckenridge would take over third while Tanner Clark ended up fourth.
However when the combined scored were added Clark made it a sweep for the weekend followed by Gaves, Clark and Breckenridge in fourth.
In motocross a rider’s combined finishes in both motos determines their rankings in the final score.
While many times, as the leader leaves everyone in his dust, the real battle is for second. A good example was the second 250/450 Junior moto.
After the gate dropped Ayden Katzenmeyer took off and left everyone in his dust. Behind him however there was a nice battle for second between J.W. Thompson and Kyle J. Zimmer. In the end Katzenmeyer swept the weekend.
Behind him Thompson, who ended up third had a combined score that gave him second overall while runner up Zimmer ended up third in the final standings.
Ryan Eager was another double winner with victories inthe 30+ Master Class and Club race.
Casey Carmichael scored his second class victory of the day when he swept both Schoolboy motos. On this day there were 17 riders in the first moto but for the second there were 16.
Once again there was a race for second and at the checkered flag Demethe Practso ended up second ahead of Dylan Thorwaldson.
The College Boy second moto came right down to the final yards of the last lap. After the gate dropped Cole Carmichael was on point but was being chased by three others.
For several laps it would be a four-way duel for the lead between Mason Stone, Zayne Bissell, Russell Tonjum and Chris McPartin.
After he took the lead it appeared that Stone might win it even though Bissell was chasing him. In the final section of the final lap Stone made a slight mistake and gave Bissell the opening he was waiting for.
In the rush to the checkered flag Bissell won by less than a bike length although with two runner up finishes, Stone won the overall.
“I didn’t know I won the race but heck yea. I got him over on this corner, he made a mistake and I was able to pass him on the inside,” Bissell said after just winning their moto.
Then he thanked Desert Rat Racing his grandfather, girl friend and those that support him.
The Big Bike Open had the only pro on hand Dylan Galliett. When the Open Big Bike and 2-Stroke Open race began Galliett and Casey Carmichael took off and left everyone.
In the end Galliett won even though Carmichael was working to make a race of it. Behind them Demethe Practso scored the 2-Stroke victory.
In the end Galliett won the moto but his runner up finish gave Carmichael another victory for the day.
After crossing the line Galliett said, “I’m only pro so it doesn’t mean much. Casey is riding good and the track actually is not too rough.”
Then he thanked his parents as well as sponsors The Door Company, Answer, Evident Dedigns and Mobius Knee Braces.
And like any motocross event there is the age ladder with the Pee Wees at the bottom and near senior citizens at the top.
In the 50+ group Troy Decker was the Junior winner while the Intermediate victor was Mike McMurry and Layne Kolbet was the only Expert so he won that class. Moving down a step to the 40+ group the Beginer winner was Jessie Sadler with Clint Miller the only Junior racing and Chad Olson scored the victory in the Intermediate Class.
While the Pee Wees, who race single speed 50cc bikes, are at the bottom rungs of the ladder these youngsters are the future of the sport. They are the next generation and earning their racing spurs.
Sean Panora won the Beginner class with Kylan Simpson ending up second ahead of Kayden Brocchini. Moving up a step Wyatt Berrington, Stephen Worrall and Guage Conner were the top three in the Junior Class.
Gaven Giomi won the Open Class although Jaiden Robert took the second moto. In the Intermediate Class Jaiden Roberts and Gaven Giomi ran nose-to-tail for both of their motos and finished in that order.
The 65cc Classes are when these youngsters learn how shift and have more speed. Jonny Simpson was the Beginner winner while Hugwapi Minder took the Juniorut victory. Rocket Richardson was the Open victor and as the only Intermediate also won that class.
During the day there was some hard racing but due to time constraints the Club race was only one moto.
The honor of finishing the weekend fell to the 85cc Supermini racers. They also run with the women but with only three on hand Shami Potratz was the “A” winner while Jen Leppek was the “B” victor.
Chase Canizzaro swept both Supermini heats as he was on a mission, leaving everyone in his wake. Otto Albrecht was the runner up with Zackery Paulson third.
“It’s really rough out there, it’s fun but it’s really hard,” Canizzaro said after finishing his last moto. “I do better racing someone cause they push me.”
Then he thanked his parents, brother and sponsors Reno KTM, Moto-Source, Dunlop, Tech One, Bell Helmets, Leatt neck brace, Thor and FMF.
Of course some riders went down and on Saturday one got a ride to the hospital as there was no one to drive him there. Sunday also had a rider go down hard enough the he earned an ambulance ride while one of the Pee Wee riders who crashed had his father carry him back to the pits.
The race weekend marks the end of an era for local motocross. Not that long ago the host club, Old Timers Motorcycle Club almost went extinct but due to the efforts of many especially Eric McElroy and Jeff McCollum it was essentially reborn.
However after this event both are retiring from running the club.
Race Director Eric McElroy said, “After 35 years, we should have elections the second Tuesday in November. And we’re hoping and praying that people are going to step up but it’s time for me and Jeff to take break. It was pretty much extinct but me and Jeff had too many people coming to us and sayin, ‘why don’t you take that back over,’ and we thought about it.
“Pondered and pondered then I told Jeff, you be president and I’ll do my old job and here we are. It’s been a great run I’m working with young kids and I don’t have any time to do that when I’m working. I’m going to step down and still help train young kids teach them how to ride motocross and we’ll go from there. We’ll be in the background I’m just not to be the go to guy every day.”
When asked about this McCollum said, “It’s been 20-years putting on races at Fernley and this is is. I’ll be here to help and I want to thank everybody at Fernley Motocross, for keeping this alive for many, many years. Keep it going but I’ve done my part.”
REPORTER’S NOTE: After posting this article I was informed by an Old Timer’s member that there are 50 members in the club. The elections will be held in December so the future looks good, positions will be filled and the Old Timers will continue to be an important part of motocross in our region.
Now everyone gets a couple of weeks off until the next round on the weekend of November 2 and 3 in Winnemucca. Thos wishing further information should check out the club’s website at www.battlebornmx.com.
