FERNLEY, NV (Oct 12) — The season ending event at 95A Speedway was a two-day shootout. Two complete shows one Saturday evening and the second Sunday afternoon.
At Saturday’s driver meeting Gene Kay made an emotional announcement about his father passing the previous week. About two months ago Kay lost his mother so it’s been a sad time for him.
He passed around memorial stickers for drivers to put on their cars and said, “mom and dad wanted me to race so here I am.”
After the heat races drivers had a meet and greet for the fans. Then they lined up four abreast, with Kay leading, and did a few laps to honor his parents as the crowd had a moment of silence.
Only three classes were present for the shootout and the biggest was the IMCA Modified group. Their Saturday night race got pretty wild at first.
When the green waved 13 racers tore into Turn 1 with Chris Olexiewicz leading the charge. At first Kevin Kennemore was second with Jeff Olschowka right behind him.
Heading down the front straight on the fifth lap Olexiewicz’s car suddenly slowed. Kennemore was barely able to miss him but Olschowka didn’t and coasted onto the infield after the crash.
Fortunately no one was hurt and the track crew towed the cars back as well as cleaned up any debris.
Racing resumed until the next caution after problems slowed Kay’s car. He limped into the pits but soon returned.
After racing resumed there was a five-way fight for second until the next caution when John Osgood spun in Turn 2. After that it took a pair of attempts to get racing going.
With four to go Chris Nieman had taken over second and the chase was on. At the finish Kennemore won but runner up Nieman was almost beside him as they crossed the line.
Only four Sport Mods took the green to start their main. At first Craig Nieman led with Jordan Braaten close behind.
Later in the race Nieman slowed then got going again. This handed the lead to Braaten and he roared off to claim the victory.
There were 13 Hobby Stocks but five of them were only credited with one lap.
When the race started Randy Boyd and Steve Buhr led the charge. One lap later Buhr wound up in the front straight wall then was hit by Richard Italiano, who couldn’t avoid him.
The race was red flagged as the track crew got both cars ready to be towed back to the pits. When the cars were being rolled to a starting point Shayna Nieman’s car wouldn’t start so one of the two trucks, pulling a car, gave her a push start.
On the green the car of Brian Mahler stalled and he had to be pushed into the pits. Finally things got rolling with Boyd briefly on point until Nieman got past him after he went wide in Turn 4.
Now Nieman was in the lead with Royce Goetz chasing her. Boyd did recover, took over third and was soon being chased by Rick Miller.
There was another caution when Bob Vaden’s motor seemed to have blown a radiator hose ending his night in a cloud of smoke and steam. Soon after Vaden stopped Miller was unable to avoid contact but the impact was so slow neither driver or their cars suffered.
There would be one more caution but up front Nieman was not about to be caught and won the race. Royce Goetz ended up second ahead of Boyd and Miller.
Due to some sort of confusion there was no trophy presentation on the front stretch so no driver interviews for this article.
• There were fewer cars for Sunday’s part of the shootout but Jeff Olschowka was able to make repairs to his car and won the IMCA Feature with Chris Nieman second.
Once again there were only four Sport Mods and Jordan Bratten won the race with Craig Nieman second. Only eight Hobby Stocks started their main but this time class champion Rick Miller won the race followed by Robert Mull.
Now the track is silent until the spring when racing resumes on the largest oval in Northwestern Nevada.
