NIGHTINGALE, NV (Sept 15) – The AMA Kenda SRT National Hare and Hound series visited Northwest Nevada this weekend for a point-to-point race. Event’s title was The Dirty 130 and Trailblazers Motorcycle Club was the host.
Starting line was outside of Lovelock with the finish at the end of a frontage road at Nightingale located east of Fernley,
The distance raced depended on the class a rider was racing in. As an example Masters 60+ and others finished at Pit 2 or 50 miles into the course.
Others stopped at Pit 3, which was at the 90-mile mark at Nightingale. Those in the Pro Classes and others still had a 40-mile loop to ride so it was a long day for them.
The winner Jacob Argubright actually started virtually last but charged to the front. The start in Lovelock didn’t go well for several riders as there was a crash right after the banner dropped but due to the dust other involved riders couldn’t see to avoid it.
Fortunately the involved riders escaped serious injuries but the same can’t be said for their bikes.
After riding hard for almost three hours an exhausted Jacob Argubright said, “I was like the last off the line and I’m very tired. The course was really cool, not the most difficult, really bitchin’ sand washes and they did a good job. It was long, it was tough and I think people were going to have a good time.”
Then he thanked his wife, who is at home with their two boys and gave special appreciation to his father as he set up the bike as well as TBT Suspension and Golden tires. Other sponsors were Off Road Support, the team he’s on, Fly Racing, TCX Boots, DDC Sprockets and the club for putting on he race,
After the start outside of Lovelock Dalton Shirey was on point with Joseph Wasson chasing him. After clearing the first pit Shirey’s race came to a sudden end when his chain broke.
Behind the leaders Argubright was on a charge although he was being careful due to the dust.
“The dust was terrible, off the start, like I said on the roads you were going 5 miles an hour. It wasn’t terrible in the sand washes just had to wait for the opportunity. I never stopped pushing the whole time but just kind of had to wait for the moment and that made it challenging.
As they cleared the third and last pit Joseph Wasson had about a minute lead over Argubright as they tore into the final stretch.
During that during the final section Wasson had problems with his bike as it shut off.
Asked about this Argubright said, “I mean Joseph rode excellent I just trying to figure out if he ran out of gas or had an air filter problem. I watched him pull it over and try get gas into it. Then it was like ‘all right here we go.”
Well Wasson was able to get his bike going and the chase was on. Argubright finished with an elapsed time of 2:56:20 while Wasson ended up with a time of 2:56:21. That means after about 130 miles they finished one second apart.
After his close second Wasson said, “I knew I had a bit of a lead so I just rode
comfortable, smooth the whole way but I had a little mechanical issue back there as my bike ended up stopping on me. I don’t know if the air filter got a little too fogged or something like that but it was a bummer. The course is really similar to a lot of them, pretty fast and a lot of rocks and stuff and whoops. But overall it was pretty similar to a lot of other ones.”
Then he thanked his wife, mechanic, Team Beta USA, Fly Racing, Alpine Stars, Scott Goggles, FMF, Renthal, Motul, Kenda Tires and everyone that supports him.
Behind the leaders Nicholas Burson ended up third with a time of 3:00:23 while fourth place Chance Fullerton had time of 3:02:01 and fifth place Ryan Smith was 3:08:29. Sixth place went to Daemon Woolslayer, who won the Pro 250 class.
The highest placing local was seventh place Austin Serpa, who finished ahead of eighth place Corey Fletcher. Coming home 14, and the first A Senior was Dan Capparelli while Austin Wilson was 16th and Jason Alosi ended up 21s so the locals had some good finishes.
Brandy Richards in 23rd was the first Women Pro finisher. Coming home 33rd was the first A Super Senior Jeff Miller.
The effort to bring the race to Northern Nevada began over a year ago with Paul Ziegler and Dennis Belingeri.
Ziegler said, “We wanted it here and they wanted to come up here. So we contacted Jacob Michna, the Series Director about it.”
While Bellingeri was at the finish Ziegler was at the start and witnessed the crash that took several riders out.
Ziegler also commented on what this reporter heard in that the riders liked the course and had a good time in the race. Now the hard work of cleaning the course of all markers is going on but hopefully next year the racers will return for an encore.
• Saturday was when the Youth Classes raced and their event was based out at Nightingale. Those results are listed in the results.
