CARSON CITY, NV (Aug.24) – This weekend Fuji Park Flat Track races returned for two days of wild racing inside the rodeo arena.
As is traditional with this event before the pros started the evening program a color guard from the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare center marched onto the front straight. Then as the colors were presented the National Anthem was sung and the night could go on.
The evening Saturday show ends with the big race the Open Pro Singles. Heat races and an LCQ determined the final line up as only 12 out of 26 made it to the final race.
After the riders lined up in three rows they were sent out for a lap then got back into their proper places.
When the starter hit the green light James T. Ott was on point but Andrew Luker took over the position with an outside move as they rounded Turn 2. Then Ott retook the lead only to give it up again to the flying Luker.
Michael Interbitzin, James Monaco and Stevie Bonsey were not far behind as they chased the leaders. A mistake by Ott allowed Monaco to take over second.
There was a race stopping incident in Turn 2 after contact between Bonsey and Inderbitzen. Words were exchanged between both riders but the officials and other team members were on scene to make it sure things didn’t go past that.
After things were calmed down the riders were put in their proper order for a single file restart on the front stretch. Once again, when the go light came on, Luker took off while Ott and Grant Holmes disputed second place.
Far behind them Inderbitzin was on a charge toward the front as he was picking off riders one by one. Up front Luker kept extending his lead as he too was on a mission.
With four to go Monaco took over second while Inderbitzin made it up to the third spot. Both ended up in those positions as there was no catching Luker on this night.
During the run Luker did brush the wall a couple of times and the announcer joked about this.
Then Luker said, “Just pulling forward and had quite a bit of momentum.”
Then he thanked some of his sponsors, Jeremy Rackley of Rackley Custom Built Trailers, PCP Motorsports Sacramento, Arai, Roof Systems in Dallas, Texas, TCX Boots, Max Caps Suspension, Wilson Racing and more.
One crowd favorite is the Holligan race. These are essentially street bikes modified for flat track racing and the brands are Harleys, Yamaha and Indian. Needless to say they are a bit heavier than most used in flat track racing.
When the go light went on Josh Mott took off with Chris McDougal and Brad Spencer giving chase and leaving the pack behind them. Round and around the track they went but in the end all three finished in the same order.
After the race Mott said, “I knew I had to get a good start. After that I could hear Chris behind me but we got it done.”
Last year a special event was added called “The Duce.” Promoter Robert Hansen has eight pros sign up for this event.
Riders pair off for a four-lap race with the winner going on to the next round. In the end there are two left and the final winner gets to pocket $2,600.
On the line for the final was Kayl Kolkman and Stevie Bonsey and each of them really wanted to win this race. When the go light went on Kolkman got the advantage and never let it slip away so he was the night’s big winner and pocketed the cash.
Another crowd favorite is the running of the Buls. These are Bultaco two-stroke motorcycles and many were made for racing but they’ve been out of production for the past three plus decades.
When the race began Andrew Luker got the hole shot with Michael Inderbitzin and Rod Spencer giving chase. Eventually James Monaco took over third but no one was going to catch Luker as he scored the first of his two victories this night.
After the race he said, “The track’s a little rough right now and these little framers don’t like the bumps but it’s definitely fun. We were able to get a good start and I’m happy with our results.”
Another crowd favorite is the Cash For Cash. Usually former World Supercross champion Jim Holly and some girls help him hit the crowd for donations.
It’s a 50/50 split with raffle tickets. So the winner gets half the money while the winning rider gets the other half. In addition a helmet, signed by all the pros, is the second item raffled off.
Five riders lined up and got a good start. After a few laps Grant Holmes was in the catbird’s seat as Andrew Luker had to settle for the runner-up spot this time.
Both the evening section as well as the daytime part of the event is a blizzard of heats with some LCQ races and main events. The daytime side is for the amateurs and gets going soon after noontime.
Here the ages vary widely from young Degan Jenkins, who scored wins in 50cc 2-Stroke and 4-stroke. Moving up to the next step Nathan Riippi won the 85cc/150cc race.
At the opposite end of the age scale Rod Reynolds scored victories in the Senior 50+ and Vet Age 35+ races. Moving up one step Jay Gardner won the Super Senior 60+ race.
This year there was a second day added due to the response this event has had. Once again there was an amateur side as well as an evening pro side to the Friday event.
New this year on Friday was the Strider races with two groups, 3- to 4-year olds as well as 5- to 6-year olds. I guess the crowd really loved seeing the kids race.
Each winner was given the strider they raced on. One person that was there said it was like herding cats as many of the kids went in different directions. This should return next year.
• Friday’s winners are part of the results at the end of the article.
