FERNLEY 95A SPEEDWAY: WILD NIGHT OF RACING

FERNLEY, NV (AUG. 17) – On this summer night the Fernley 95A Speedway hosted a full night of racing. Four divisions were on hand as the Pro stocks were racing round 4 of their Tri-State Challenge.

The smallest group, the Sport Mods actually put on the race of the night.

During the trophy presentation winner Jimmy Ray Huffmon said, “It was close but it was a good race, I had a lot of fun. Thought I was going to be able to work the high side there, one of the first restarts I found a good groove so I went back to there and never found it again, finally moved back down and that worked out better for me.”

Then he thanked his hard working wife as while he’s racing she’s running their business the Pizza Factory and is his main supporter.

The race was highlighted by some confusion as well as two charges from the back with the result being the closest finish of the night.

During the Sport Mod main eventual winner Jimmy Ray Huffmon (27) squeezed between Bill Pearson (23P) and Jeff Tuttle.

When the green waved sending the seven-car field on its way Bill Pearson was on point but that start was called back then Craig Nieman had to pit to get a tire changed. In fact it took three attempts to get the race going.

Up front Rusty McMillan was on point followed by Andy Welch and Jeff Tuttle. Coming from the back Craig Nieman charged into the lead and seemed to go into cruise control.

Later McMillan brought out a caution and during that time Nieman found out he had his second flat of the night. So it was back the pits for a new tire.

On the track Huffmon saw both first and second head for the pits so stopped to find out what ws going on or if the race was finished.

This set off an interesting situation as the scoring crew thought he had actually left the track.

“There was a little confusion in the scoring tower when I stopped over there because I saw the first & second place leave the track,” Huffmon said. “I was a little confused so I stopped to talk to Matt and I guess they thought I went off the track and started telling me to go to the back of the pack. I knew I hadn’t left the track so I wasn’t going to comply.”

At that time there were only three cars left on the track but soon a couple returned and things got rolling again with Huffmon up front and Nieman at the back.

When the green waved the chase was on for the final three laps of the race. As the white flag lap began the chase was on.

The Sport Mods had the closest finish of the night when Jimmy Ray Huffmon just edged a charging Craig Nieman at the line.

At the green Huffmon won as the charging Nieman fell about three feet shy of taking the victory.

After the race and back in the pits Nieman laughing said, “I was robbed.”

The Pro Stocks were running round 4 of their Tri-State Challenge and had the largest number of cars that’s been seen here this season.

Attrition was also a factor as six of the 16 cars were unable to start the main.

For all but the last few yards of the Pro Stock feature Scott Lenz was on point.

When the green waved and the main began Scott Lenz jumped into the lead with the pack giving chase. Things slowed when Ryan Smith’s car came to a stop at the top of Turn 2 but then was able to continue.

Dale Tatum used this time to make a pit call. After the restart Lenz took off while Dave King Jr. and Bill Pearson disputed second place.

For much of he race the top three were petty close. Then Pearson fell back a bit and was solo in third place.

In the last part of the Pro Stock feature Dave King (43) was chasing leader Scott Lenz.

Up front King closed on Lenz and soon they were running nose-to-tail. After the taking the white flag is was go for broke time.

Zooming into Turn 2 King decided to make his move so he could get past Lenz. Well sometimes this works but on not this time so both leaders were taken out.

Needless to say a delighted and surprised Pearson took the gift and claimed the victory. For him it had been a challenging race due to the dust.

After the two leaders took each other out in the final corner of the Pro Stock main, a surprised and delighted Bill Pearson claimed the victory.

“I knew those guys were fighting each other hard but you couldn’t see coming out of Four at all. Every lap I could not see anything. I was like, ‘hope nobody stopped as I’m going to plow them,’ he said. “Then I saw those guys getting into each other then I’m like I didn’t even know it was the white flag, it was so dusty I couldn’t see the flags. I saw the checkered and I’m like, ‘oh right on.’”

Then he thanked his uncle B.J. for letting him race the car. Apparently something got bent in the heat race and Pearson not only thanked B.J. but his son Joe as they got things fixed before the main. He also thanked Paula Earl and Pearson Realty for their support.

When the green sent the 10-car Hobby Stock field off Randy Boyd just launched into the lead with Robert Crane and the pack chasing him. The track was a bit slick and drivers were trying different lines getting through the corners.

In the late stages of the Hobby Stock main Royce Goetz chases leader Randy Boyd.

Debris in Turn 3 brought out the caution as Shayna Nieman stopped in Turn 1 and Crane’s smoking car came to a stop on the front stretch.

Once things got back in proper order the field was sent off again. And like last time Boyd wsa on point but this time Royce Goetz was giving chase and pressuring him.

Randy Boyd scores the victory in Hobby Stocks.

In the end Boyd won the race followed by Goetz, Tom Haxal and Rocky Goetz.

There were 11 IMCA Modifieds and when their race began contact in Turn 4 gave Robert Miller a flat and brought out a caution. However the damage apparently couldn’t be fixed so he was out of the race.

On the restart Cory Sample moved into third then second. After that he used an inside move going through Turn 1 to take the lead from early leader Malen Gonzalez.

Heading toward the front Chris Olexiewicz take over second from early leader Malen Gonzalez in the IMCA Modified main.

Soon Chris Olexiewicz moved up and he took over second then Jeff Olschowka captured third dropping Gonzalez to fourth.

Once in the lead Cory Sample was on cruise control. Here he three-wheels his car through Turn 2.

By now Sample was in cruise control as he would three wheel his car through Turn 2. In the end Sample won the day followed by Olexiewicz, who could not catch him, Olschowka and Gonzalez.

REPORTER’S NOTE: I somehow didn’t get the quotes from Randy Boyd about his win in Hobby Stocks and Sample never showed up at the trophy presentation so was unable to get quotes from him.

Also need to give a special thanks for Gina Gonzalez for getting the word out that I needed a ride to the race and to Craig Nieman for giving me that much needed ride.

Next race for 95A Speedway is Saturday, September 7 and as usual there is a 6 p.m. start to the action. As a reminder in less than a month the World of Outlaws will be at the track and one can buy tickets online.
