RENO, NV (May 15) – Racing Preview this week is jam packed with events in this area, regionally and across the country. But some could be affected by weather headed our way.
CAR, CRUISES AND MEETS:
• The weekend starts Friday morning when Hot August Nights begins its Spring Fever event to downtown Reno. This event runs through Sunday and it’s a good way to view some cars we’ll see in August.
Once again weather could be a factor at least during Friday.
• Friday evening, starting at 6 p.m. is another Summit Racing Cruise In. Things get going at 6 p.m. and end at 8 with cars coming and going.
• Saturday has the Cruise to Summer Slammed that begins at 7250 South Virginia and at 11 a.m. everyone cruises to Mills Park in Carson City.
• That same day the Northern Nevada Camaro Club will have a cruise starting at 10 a.m. from Summit Racing at 960 Glendale Ave. in Sparks.
Their first stop will be at 3925 Neil Road as the Northern Nevada Food Bank is having a donation event on Armed Forces Day. Donations can also earn raffle prizes as well.
On Saturday the event runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. then at 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. A good way to help the Food Bank.
• Out in Fallon there is an Armed Forces Day Poker Chip Run with registration starting at 8:30 a.m. and the run beginning at 9:30 a.m.
• Reno Cars & Coffee has a new location for its Sunday meet, this week they’ll be at Classic Rock Coffee located at 5150 Mae Anne Avenue beside the Big O Tires store. As usually the meet begins at 10 a.m. and runs until noon.
Hopefully by then the weather will be clear.
RACING (REGIONAL):
• Racing Preview has several races scheduled for Northern Nevada and California but once again it depends on the incoming weather.
• To the east Summit Raceway in Elko as a Friday, Saturday show with a 7 p.m. start to the action each evening.
Closer to home Top Gun Drag Strip has two days and one evening of racing. Things start with $5 Friday beginning at 6 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday get going at 9 p.m. with the next rounds of the Summit ET series and Junior Dragster series as well as the TNT series.
The scheduled Norcal Nostalgia cars won’t be there. With weather coming in they canceled and hopefully will be rescheduled for later in the summer.
• Two regional oval tracks are hoping to be in action Saturday night. Rattlesnake Raceway outside of Fallon should have its regular show starting at 6 p.m. and at that same time American Valley Speedway over in Quincy, Calif. will have its regular show with the Dwarf Cars on hand.
Once again all the events will depend on the weather so be sure to check with the tracks before heading out.
MOTORCYCLE RACING & PRACTICE (OVER THE HILL):
• Earlier this week the scheduled flat track race at the Sacramento Mile was canceled. It’s been rescheduled for early August.
s• Practice session at the Northern California motocross track are in doubt when this article was posted. So the best advice is to call before packing up and heading out.
The MMX hotline is, 530-419-5200 and for information about E Street or Riverfront that hotline is 775-265-7223.
• This weekend is the annual Hangtown Classic that kicks off the Lucas Oil Motocross series. While the pros race Saturday the amateurs aren’t forgotten.
On Wednesday and Thursday the Amateur Shootout is happening. Those not there yet need to get an early start to avoid the incoming weather.
RACING (NATIONAL):
• Racing Preview has a bunch of televised and streamed events for this weekend. We’re one week from the Memorial Day weekend so things are ramping up for three major series.
• As usual Thursday is a bit slim but at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NASCAR Race Hub. This week the organization returns to its actual home in Charlotte, North Carolina where most of the teams are based.
• Friday Fox Sports 1 has Gander Outdoor Truck Series qualifying at 1:30 p.m. followed at 3 p.m. by the NASCAR Cup teams qualifying for the All Star Race followed at 5:30 p.m. the truck race.
At 7:30 p.m. the network airs NHRA Friday Nite Nitro from the Virginia Nationals.
• Saturday is a busy day that gets going at 9:30 a.m. as Fox Sports 1 has Saturday Nitro Live from the NHRA event.
At 2 p.m. over on NBC Sports there is day 1 qualifying for the Indy 500.
Switching back the Charlotte Fox Sports 1 has the NASCAR All Star Open at 3 p.m. followed at 5 p.m. by the All Star race itself.
For you two wheel fans the Lucas Oil Hangtown Classic will happen no matter what the weather is. So it could be a mud bowl.
All the motos can be viewed if one has subscribed to NBC Sports Gold. If not there some channel switching will be needed.
The first motos are on MAVTV with the 250 one beginning at 1 p.m. followed at 2 p.m. with the first 450 moto. Then, over on NBC Sports the second 250 moto goes off at 3 p.m. followed by 4 p.m. with the second450 moto.
• Leaving TV Land for the Internet www.fanschoice.tv has racing beginning at 11 a.m. with the GNCC race from Millfield, Ohio. A series of short track races are then streamed starting at 3:30 p.m. from Langley Speedway then jumping to various tracks.
• Back to TV Land, as on Sunday NBC, starting at 9 a.m. has day two of qualifying at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Following that session is the Fast 9 Qualifying runs to see just who will be on the pole.
Then it’s back to Fox Sports 1 as, on a same day delayed basis, at 4:30 p.m. they have the NHRA Virginia Nationals.
Whew, that’s it for this weekend. Hope one can get out and enjoy either one of the car meets or see live racing. There is nothing like seeing it live.
Have a safe weekend everyone.
