VIRGINIA CITY, NV (April 28) – The day after the Pros, Experts and Amateurs race it’s time for the Novice riders as well as the women, bombers, vintage bikes and new this year, the Diva and Adventure Bikes classes.
Sunday had another tribute to the late Bob Cavakis. In fact family members and the announcers downed a small glass of Southern Comfort in his honor.
With so many classes a rider’s corrected time usually determines their finishing position. This is especially so on Sunday as the skill levels vary so much.
VCMC added two classes this year like the Diva for those women that wanted to race the short course. Another was the Adventure class that raced the short course in street bikes and the Team Relay.
All in all 420 riders started and once again two riders bought head start positions in a pre-race auction. Steve Ritter, who races in the Master Class got a 2-minute head start while Novice 125 racer Walker McGreal had the 1-minute head start.
After that the riders, in rows of 10 were released with the new Team Relay racers that use the short course were sent off last.
The long course was the same 23-mile on used on Saturday. Once again the Ultra Masters, for those 70 and older as well as the Vintage bikes used the short course.
The overall winner was Tyler Thompson, from Dayton, Nevada, who finished with a time of 3:45:11.723 followed by Robert Dawson with a time of 3:54:22.076.
To illustrate how much a rider’s corrected time count Thompson started on the 35th row while second place Dawson started on the 25th row.
When the checkered finally waved it appeared as though Steven Walkiewicz may have been the first overall to get the initial checkered. However on corrected time he ended up ninth overall.
Afterwards he said, “I was feeling good all day, my bike was working really good as we just tuned it in. My father-in-law changed the jetting and everything is just awesome. Had to slow down for the whoops and ca’t tellyou how many times I bottomed out the suspension.
Then he thanked his father-in-law, family, Hodges Transportation and his employer NATC.
Coming home third overall was Walker McGreal, who got the two-minute head start in the pre-start auction. He also won the 125cc Novice Class.
“It was pretty good having the 2-minute head start, the dust wasn’t bad since I was out there. It was really rocky and fun.”
Then he thanked his parents for their support in helping him get to the race.
The Woman’s winner Nicole Collins, started from the front row this time. In year’s past she usually has one of the head start position.
After finishing in sixth overall she said, “I’m tired, very tired. I actually liked it a lot more then when I usually had number “0.” The course was really rocky and really dusty.”
Then she thanked her parents, her Poppa as well as the friends that came out to support her.
There was one more woman class winner and that was Aleguin “Allie,” Scheetz, who was the first ever Diva winner.
“It was pretty fun, there were a couple of spots that got me a few times but other than that it was good,” she said.
Then she thanked her parents, brother and others that ride with her.
Last year was when the Ultra Master Class was added. These 70 year olds race on the short class and the ageless Pete Prichard made it two in a row.
On the podium he thanked his wife for her support as well as making sure he takes any meds. Then he thanked the AARP as well as giving a special shout out to Reno Motor Sports for their support.
One winner that should get the “Iron Man,” award if there was one was “Artichoke,” Joe Divecchio. Not only has he raced in every VCMC but Divecchio races both days.
The last racer to reach the finish line was Carson Rigney, who crossed the line at 3:20 p.m. a good two hours plus after the checkered first waved. He had to push his bike up the final hill and was escorted by the sweep riders.
After catching his breath the Fernley rider said, “I’m running on a stock tank and just didn’t have enough gas. I was right here in mile 22 and just couldn’t make it to the finish. Don’t stop, just kept pushin’.”
Then he thanked everybody in his pit crew, Kawasaki, all fiends and family.
Now the Comstock is quiet as tourist season begins. But next April riders from across the west and other regions will once again answer the siren call of the Virginia City Grand Prix.

The new Team race class used the short track and Chris Martin was the first rider to complete a lap. He and his teammate won the class.
