RENO, NV (Nov. 9) – The Northern Nevada Kart Club (NNKC) held its annual awards banquet at the Boomtown Hotel and Casino. Entering the room there was a historical display of photographs, trophies from years gone by and past championship jackets.
Another tradition is a cake with the NNKC logo on it. That waited until later in the evening when it was time for desert.
After dinner NNKC president Rodney Rivera got up and honored long time members like Mitch Kenney, who joined the club in 1981 as well as Mike McMullen as he signed on in 1982. Others honored were Jeff Wamre, Steve Dow, Nate Sombatsiri, Christian Cerceau, Robert Miller and Doug Hunter.
He also commented on the successful 2018 season that included averaging 40 karts a race, the KPX event that saw 110 entries and improvements to the track as well as the club’s first Enduro race, which could be a regular part of next season.
Then it was time to thank the club’s sponsors Acme Boilers, Granite Construction Supply, Parts Unlimited, Aspen Developers Corp, Mike Arnold and Eric Petersen, who helped build the pit out extension.
Arnold, who has supported the club financially as well and uses the track for testing was honored as the Sponsor of the Year. All the sponsors got an appreciation plaque and those that weren’t there will have their’s delivered.
This year the raffle was different. Rather than putting all the tickets into one pile there were small bags placed behind or on the prizes so people could choose which one they wanted to be part of.
All during the evening Rivera would pause then draw more raffle tickets for prizes.
Then Rivera introduced the Volunteers of the Year. They are the father-son team of Brud and Alec Beaudoin.
After another pause race day staff members Cody McKinney, Stephanie Anderline, Derek Anderling, Jr. Munoz, Tyler Wamre, Rachel Anderline, Susan Diez and Dianne Dulude were all introduced and honored for their help during the season. They take care of the operational side of each race day.
This year there was a special Ironman Award created by the board. Doug Hunter got the award as he ran in two different classes during the season, which is no mean feat as driving a racing kart is far more physically demanding that most think it is.
Another award, the Most Improved Karter was earned by Tanner Schultz as he started the season from the back of the grid but moved up as he improved finished third in the Jr. 2 206 final points standings.
During the raffle the table where Brooks Anderline kept winning and he would come up to accept them. One time, after winning a t-shirt and cap, he gave the next set away to another young racer.
All during the evening class champions and the runner ups were handed trophies to celebrate their success this year.
Once the hardware had been given there was one more very special award.
The Karter of the Year trophy is a very special one and it’s been around for 25 years. Each year the winner’s name is engraved on the trophy as this is the club’s highest award.
This 2018 Karter of the Year trophy is Zach Rivera, the inaugural KA100 champion, who is known for helping his fellow competitors whenever he can. There was also an incident where contact sent the kart of Hunter in a flip, Rivera stopped and was the first to reach him.
After receiving this honor he said, “I’ve been around for a while even before I was racing. I remember as a kid watching my brother race, my uncle race and I remember my uncle being presented it. I would have never thought I would have been presented it in the future.
“It means a lot to me, this club means a lot to me and I have to thank everybody who selected me and thank everybody that’s been here for me.”
After the celebration ended people were socializing, picking up some of the raffle items they won and just enjoying with their fellow club members
A little later NNKC President Rodney Rivera commented on the season past and his plans for the future.
“We had a great season, averaged about 40 karts, had a great KPX, the club is in great shape financially. We’re going to do some improvements to the track and move on, I don’t see any obstacles for our club or our track in the way,” he said.
He added the Airport Authority, which is the land-owner, has been very cooperative with the club. Then he had some other news about his future.
Then he went on, “For me I’m going to step own as president, I feel like I’ve done my duty and have led the right group of people that want to take over. They’re new, enthusiastic and they see what it takes to run the club. I look forward to see what they’re going to do but I’ll always be there for guidance and to help out. For me my professional race team is the direction I’m going to go.”
Rivera is in Las Vegas for the Super Kart Nationals this weekend then he like others can relax for a while. In the New Year he’ll get an early start while NNKC will get ready for its annual practice race in March.
It’s been a good season for the club and everyone looks for an even brighter season for kart racing in our area. For further information about the club please check their website at www.nnkcreno.com.
