MOON ROCKS, NV (Oct. 28) – Moon Rocks was the site of the latest MRANN race, the Zombie Falls Hare Scrambles. Hosted by the Rim Benders great fall weather brought 111 riders out for the Sunday’s big bike race.
At the end of the three-laps the overall winner 45-year-old Daron Rahlves said, “The course was so fun, all those little washes and it was technical, good rocks and the whoops, you just had to man up and go.”
He admitted to getting a little squirely but when he knew second place was only 20 seconds behind him it was time to go.
Asked who he needed to thank Rahlves said, “You know I ski for Red Bull and they are involved in motor sports so it’s pretty cool to just find your love in life. I get some help from Reno KTM, Fox and Leatt. I thank Mom and Dad for getting me here, I’m a little older now but I still have to thank them.”
In his past Rahlves has won Gold, Silver and Bronze Metals in downhill skiing as well as being in the Olympics a couple of times.”
As usual after the rider’s meeting the racers headed for the starting area. Experts are launched first, then after a short time to let the dust clear the Amateurs go and finally the Novice riders are sent on their way.
While it was dry the winds did help blow the dust off the course so everyone could see where they were going.
With the laps only being 25-miles in length those that wanted to win their class needed to complete three laps. Anyone what wanted to be listed as a finisher needed to complete two laps.
When runner-up Ross Walton arrived at the finish he said, “I loved it, it was so much fun, it was very rewarding. It was nice, no bottlenecks, I thought there was going to be a bunch of bottlenecks. A fantastic day.”
Then he thanked his family, wife and two kids, as well his best buddy Zack Cramer.
Next to arrive was third-place Sean Jones, who said, “It was a good race, single track was good but I haven’t rode since Lovelock. The course was good, the waterfalls were great because they kept me out of the whoops as those beat me up.”
Then he thanked his parents, wife and kids as well as C&R Racing and his other sponsors.
Finishing 11th overall was the first Amateur Riley Wood. He explained it only took him about 10 minutes after his line started before he caught the experts.
“It was really fun, I love whoops because everyone else hates them. It was all great, I have no complaints,” he said.
Then he thanked his parents, Carson Motor Sports, Mike Metals and Dunlop Tires.
As finishers arrived some chose to continue on for a third lap or called it a day. Beth Legenbauer paused for a few moments then turned around to get more fuel before starting her third lap.
Coming in 23rd overall was the first Novice rider, which considering that he started in the third row meant some hard riding.
After checking his bent up pipe Dustin Burrell said, “It was fun, a little technical here and there but fun. I smashed the pipe a lot, cutting it too tight.”
Then he thanked Brody and Ron Honea for pitting as well as his father and everyone in Trail Blazers that helped out.
With all the hard racing there were a few injuries but most were either minor or didn’t require an ambulance ride to the hospital.
• On Saturday the short track racers got their chance as the Pee Wees, Mini Bikes, V Women and Bombers raced. During the afternoon the popular Team Race was also held. Unfortunately the results weren’t posted when this article was ready but those results will be ready later in the week.
Now everyone gets a couple of weeks off before the final race of the 2018 season. That will be the weekend of November 10/11 and staged east of Fernley past the Nightingale exit.
