RENO, NV (Oct. 24) – Racing preview for this week begins with on a serious note. Later we’ll get to the usual topics.
It’s my sad duty to inform out readers that last Sunday morning we lost Bob Cavakas, otherwise known as Moto Mouth or just plain Moto.
If you don’t know him Moto was a huge supporter of motorcycle racing. A former racer he was one of the driving forces behind motorcycle events in this region.
He also helped a great number of younger riders with his Moto Mouth Mini Team.
For many years he announced both motocross and MRANN desert races and even helped some at the annual Hangtown Outdoor Nationals. After retiring from doing this full time he’s been mentoring others to take his place.
One thing he never gave up was being the voice of the Virginia Grand Prix, in fact I believe he has announced every one of this classic event.
Since his retirement from his day job, Bob and his wife have been traveling and even attended this year’s Burning Man. Sadly he passed while attending the Donner Hare Scrambles.
His stepson Ryan Toomey said that Bob didn’t want a memorial but a party to celebrate his life. Well that will happen Friday at the Lazy 5 Regional Park, 7100 Pyramid Way in Spanish Springs.
The function begins at 12:30 and runs until 3:30 p.m. but will probably continue in other locations afterwards. Should be plenty of tears as well as plenty of stories of his influence as well as antics over the past several decades.
If possible please try and attend. Moto will be missed for quite a long time.
CAR FUNCTIONS:
- Carson Cars and Coffee have two events listed on their Face Book Page
Both are Sunday with the usual meet at Dutch Brothers Coffee located at 1231 S. Carson Street. That meet begins at 11 a.m. and should have a nice collection of cars to view.
The other one is the Carson Strikes Meet #1, which begins at 11 a.m. and is at Wink’s Silver Strike Lanes in Gardnerville.
- On Saturday there are two Trunk or Treat functions where people decorate their cars and have goodies for the kids in the trunks. It’s a nice pre-Halloween time of the youngsters.
One in Reno is at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and runs from 3 until 6 p.m. T
The other is the 2nd annual Trunk or Treat staged by the friends of the Dayton Valley Library. It goes from 5 until 7:30 p.m. and the library is located at 3210 Old Dayton Valley Road.
RACING (LOCAL):
• There are two motorcycle races this weekend and both have a Halloween theme.
Rim Benders MC is staging the next round of the MRANN championship series. It’s the Zombie Falls Hare Scrambles and will be at the Moonrocks area.
Saturday begins at 9:30 when the Pee Wee racers start followed at 11 a.m. by the Mini Bikes/V Women and Bomber race. Then at 1 p.m. the popular Team Race will begin.
There is a contest so riders in all the groups are encouraged to race in costume for prizes. And Saturday evening the usual trick or treat party will be held.
Big bikes start their race at 10 a.m. and since the course is only 25-miles long it will be a three-lap event for the winners. To be classed as a finisher a rider must complete two laps.
Out at the Fernley Motocross Track, located just west of the Veteran’s Cemetery, Battle Born MX will have the next round of its fall series with the Old Timers MX hosting the event.
Saturday is for practice from 9 until 2 p.m. then there will be a trick or treat party for the youngsters.
Sunday begins with practice at 8 a.m. and there is also a costume contest for the racers. The first gate drops around 9 a.m. as everyone gets to enjoy the challenges of racing at the Sand Box
• Over the hill three motocross tracks in Northern California have practice sessions this week.
E Street MX Park has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
Riverfront has practice from 5 until 10 p.m. Thursday then from 9 until 2 p.m. Sunday. Prairie City has Thursday practice from 2 until 6 p.m. then from 9 until 2 p.m. Sunday.
RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAl)
- Again Thursday is a bit slim but NBC Sports at 2 p.m. airs NASCAR America. Then at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NASCAR Race Hub.
It’s a great day to catch up on races that might have been missed by watching them on www.youtube.com.
• Things begin to heart up Friday as BeIn Sports at 8:55 a.m. has FIM Super Bikes from Qatar. Then at 10:10 p.m. the network has Moto GP qualifying from Phillip Island
Back home in America Fox Sports at 3 p.m. has NHRA Friday Nitro Live.
• Saturday is a busy day for race fans as the buffet of speed is quite large.
NBC Sports gets things rolling at 6 a.m. with NASCAR Cup practice from Martinsville followed at 7 a.m. with truck qualifying.
Fox Sports 1 gets in the act at 10 a.m. with the Camping World Truck Series race from the track they call the “Paper Clip.”
Fox Sports at 2 p.m. airs NHRA Saturday Nitro Live
Over at BeIn Sports things get going at 8:55 a.m. with FIM Superbike action from Qater. Then at 10 p.m. the network shows the Moto GP event from Phillip Island followed at 11 p.m. with more FIM Superbike action from Qater.
• Switching to the Internet www.fanschoice.tv will stream two short track events on Saturday.
At 2:30 p.m. Meridian Speedway has Trunk or Treat Halloween Championship Night. Then at 7 p.m. Tucson Speedway closes its 2018 season with the Grand Finale Night.
- Switching back to TV Land on Sunday NBC Sports starting at 11:30 a.m. has the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race from Martinsville. The shortest track on the season makes for a day of some wild racing mayhem, especially since it’s part of the Play Offs.
At that same time, 11:30 a.m., ABC will have the Grand Prix of Mexico as Formula One races in Mexico City. This race might clinch the 2018 world championship,
Later Fox Sports 1 has delayed coverage of the NHRA Toyota Nationals from Las Vegas. Only one more round is left in the Count Down so some championships might be secured by the end of the day.
That’s it for now. Everyone have a safe Nevada Day weekend and if possible do get out and see a race live. There is nothing like it.
OTHER RACING NEWS:
- On Tuesday, from 2 until 3 p.m. be sure to either tune in or stream Teresa’s Garage Radio show. The program covers all things automotive and sometimes has special guests.
I also have a preview part that comes on at 2:15 where I let everyone know what is still available to see even though the seasons are winding down. Hope you’ll give it a listen
