STEAD, NV (Oct. 7) – Desert Park Raceway was the scene of the season’s final race for the Northern Nevada Kart Club. While the morning started off cold things warmed up and set the stage for a good day of racing.
Three of the races went right down to the wire. For one young driver the day brought a victory he’s worked long and hard to achieve this season.
The Jr. 2 LO206 main went right down to the final lap and to say the winner was overjoyed would be a complete understatement.
Heading for the Junior 2 checkered flag Chase Dulude just leads Cain Fredricks and Tanner Schultz.
“Tanner (Schultz) and Dehame (Malone) freight trained me on the start and I couldn’t get out in front,” Chase Dulude said after catching his breath and congratulating his fellow drivers. “I was in fourth after Cain (Fredricks) got by me then Tanner made me work to get by him.”
Then he thanked God as his faith has helped him go through the trials of this season. And his parents, especially his father, who has taught him how to do some of the work on the kart by himself.
When the green flag waved Schultz got the jump on Dulude and took off with Malone right behind him. Fredricks was third and that began a three-way duel for second was Schultz was gapping the field.
At the Jr. 2 start Tanner Schultz leads Deehame Malone, Chase Dulude and Cain Fredricks.
After a couple of laps Dulude began to pick off is rivals one by one. Behind him there was a three-way battle for fifth.
After a few laps the top three closed up and Fredricks took over the point while Schultz was trying to fend off the determined Dulude.
Late in the race there was some contact but they all kept going as the race came down to if Fredricks could hold off Dulude as they took the white flag.
“I didn’t know if I could, got a run out of 9 cause I knew that would be my one shot,” Dulude said. “I knew the only chance I had was to get by him there, I just dive bombed him going into Turn 1. God gave me the power to do that, I didn’t know I could even drive like that, I swear to you I did not know.”
So Dulude finally found the victory that had eluded him while Fredricks and Schultz came home second and third.
The Senior/Masters LO206 class was the largest with a dozen karts taking the green flag. Their event ended the season and was another barnburner as it combined two classes.
Up front veteran Steve Dow was on point with the youngster Zack Rivera close behind him. Behind them in third was Kelly Chinander, who was going to have one of her best finishes of the year.

Lap after lap Dow and Rivera circulated the track only inches apart. At one time there was a bit of contact but Rivera slowed just a bit to allow Dow to keep the lead and off they went again.
Finally Rivera did get the lead and fell back just a bit but as the laps were winding down. Then he closed the gap and once again it was a nose-to-tail duel for the victory.

At the checkered Rivera won the day with Dow a close second. Behind them Chinander, who ran solo in third the whole race ended up in that position.
Behind the lead trio Masters winner was Doug Hunter, who ended up fifth overall ahead of eighth place and second masters Jason Anderline.
After shaking Dow’s hand after the race Rivera said, “That was a rough one, had a good battle there and I may have been a little too rough. It was a good race, it was awesome, you know I think this class is great, I love coming back to it every once in a while, it was awesome, had a great time.
Then he thanked Nevada Kart Sport as well as Scott Fredricks for supplying the 206 motor, which Rivera didn’t have until a few days ago.
Then Masters winner Doug Hunter said, “That was really fun. Being there are two classes there are some guys that are fast in the senior class and slow in the senior class and guys are fast in masters with a 30-pound difference. It’s just really fun, I’m faster on the straight away but they’re faster on the infield so it makes it a challenge on every lap.”
Then he thanked his brother Allen for putting the kart back together, Rodney Rivera and Nevada Kart Sport.

This season Mike Arnold and Mitch Kennedy put their heads together and are working to bring back the TAG class. On Sunday there were five of these karts divided into Masters and Senior class.
Right out of the gate Kennedy was on point but Dean Andrews, who usually races a 125 Shifter kart was close behind. Lap after lap they circulated the track in an almost nose-to-tail duel
Eventually Andrews got the lead but both were still close for much of the race. Finally, as they were headed to the white flag Kennedy got past and back into the lead.

At the end Kennedy and Andrews were one-two and each won their respective classes.
“It was a great race, hat’s off to Dean for putting on a good show,” Kennedy said after the post race-weigh in. “Good race, good time. I had a hunch he was going to make a mistake and he hung a wheel in Turn 4 and that all I needed to get him.”
This time there were only three KA100 competitors and on the green Bryce Berry took off and left the other two as he cruised to victory. Behind him Doug Hunter finished second with Luke Anderson in third.

After the race Berry said, “I think sore and will feel it tomorrow. I have learned things today about myself and my driving that I’m very glad I did learn.”
Then he thanked his father as well as Rodney and Zack at Nevada Kart Sport. In a few weeks, if things can be arranged he’ll head to Las Vegas for the Super Nationals.
Starting the day were the fastest karts, the F125 Shifters and at first it appeared this would be another close race.
For most of the F125 Shifter main Jeff Wamre held off Dennis Hill.
Up front Jeff Wamre was on point followed by Dennis Hill and Dean Andrews. For the first three laps they were pretty close together.
Coming out of the final left-right-left complex known as Tic Tack Toe Andrews spun his kart, which put him out of the race. Now the battle was between Wamre and Hill as they tore around the track nose-to-tail.
With two laps to go something happened to Wamre’s kart and he had to park it off the track. Up front Hill took the gift and stormed away to claim the victory with Mike Faker ending up second for the day.
Dennis Hill won the F125 Shifter main.
Later Hill said, “If I had a better start I would have definitely got him (Wamre) and then I know for sure I would have just taken off and no one would have caught me. But if the go kart wasn’t hopping in Turn 4 then I would have got him. My plan was to just follow him and be patient.
Then he thanked his father, who does most of the work on his kart, Gilmore Graphics and Dennis Hill at McCuan Metals.
Now except for testing Desert Park is silent but at the end of October, if all goes well, there might be an Enduro race. After that on Friday, November 9th the NNKC will hold its awards banquet at Boomtown Casino.
