FERNLEY, NV (Sept 29) – It was a September Finale at Fernley 95A Speedway this week. The final points race was also the season ending event as the two-day show was canceled.
Topping the night were the IMCA Modifieds and a visiting track champion, as well as the runner up, had a great time at this bullring.
“American Valley champion this year, we picked up two main events wins there and this is our first main event win here at Fernley this year,” Jeff Olschowka said. “We got in the corner and together a little bit, rubbing a little bit and I think he (Riley Simmons) got his tires on the water and lost it down there. This thing was good tonight, rolling and the track conditions were awesome sticky in spots, slick in spots but it was fast and good.”
Then he thanked Razor Chassis, ICON Pistons for the motor, wife and supporters.
When the green waved Olschowka took the point with an outside move as the field exited Turn 2. Right behind him was Susanville driver Riley Simmons.
The first caution came at the end of Lap 2 after one car and had a problem. On the restart Olschowka and Simmons took off with Shawn Natenstedt and Gene Kay not far behind them.
Soon after that Simmons spun, which took him out of contention. Up front Kay held second while Mark Skender was third ahead of Natenstedt, who had fallen to forth.
There was another caution on lap six and another after that due to Simmons spinning.
A long stint of green flag racing followed with Olschowka on point followed by Kay, Alec Childs, Mark Skender and Chris Nieman, who had been working his way from the back.
After two more cautions the officials ordered single file restarts. By now Nieman had moved into third and started challenging Kay for second.
The last caution came after Simmons spun again and since it was the second time he brought out a caution it ended his night.
With nine to go the green waved again and Olschowka roared off to claimed the victory while Nieman, who was the other American Valley racer took over second dropping Kay to third where they all finished.
After the dust settled Nieman said, “An AmericanValley one-two and I got second overall there and Jeff got first. They made me start in the back because I won the week before or so. It was pretty tough passing those guys as they’re pretty fast up there when they start in the front row. The track was pretty hooked up, one and two started getting pretty slick towards the end and I started getting a little loose over there but overall the car was pretty good.”
Then he thanked Lonnie, Jack Smith, Foothill Custom Meats, GRT Racecars, his father and his grandmother.
There were two other American Valley racers there and they brought their Sport Mods. The track would like to build that class so Criag Nieman and Jimmy Ray Huffmon got an 8-lap demonstration heat race.
The Dwarf Car main was between both big car classes. When the green waved pole sitter Tim Fitzpatrick took off and left everyone in his wake.
At the rear was the NV Outlaw champion Joe Frock, who had to start at the back. In about three laps he took over second and the chase was on.
Over the next several laps Frock was closing in on the flying Fitzpatrick about a second a lap. One he caught him it took only an inside move at the end of the backstretch to take over the lead.
In the end Frock secured his 12th victory of the year followed by Fitzpatrick, Dan Geil and Glen Sciarani. The entire race went green to checker without one caution and took just under seven and a half minutes to complete.
After the race Frock said, “He (Fitzpatrick) got to start up in the front and got off to a great lead. At first I was wondering if I had enough time to track him down but 25-laps seemed to be just enough. I think my car was getting faster as the race wore on so that’s kind of how we try to set up the car. It felt good, was nice start last and work our way through the pack and the track was really good.”
Then he expressed his appreciation to John Randall for helping in the pits. After that Frock thanked his sponsors for their support and they are Damron Racing of Las Vegas, R&J Landscaping, Wild Island, Diatte Racing Innovations, Nature’s Bakery and Voss Fabrication.
The mains began with the Hobby Stocks and 13 of them took the green. Up front Preston Pheasant grabbed the lead but was soon challenged by Randy Boyd, who took the point on the second lap.
Soon the lead quartet was Boyd, Pheasant, Fred White and Mark Hain, who was a mission and soon claimed third
Up front Boyd was running away with the race and soon encountered lap traffic. Behind him J.T. Stark had problems and his race ended on lap three while John Schilling wound up on the infield two laps later while Mickey Beauchat’s night ended on lap 13.
Up front there was no catching Boyd but in the final laps Hain took over second dropping Pheasant to third ahead of Rick Miller.
“Once I got out front I just didn’t slow down, I knew I had to win this race so I went as fast as I possibly could, ” Boyd said. “We came in third in points and I had beat them by at least three cars so I knew I had to win it and just went for it. Shayna was leading it, Rick was second had to beat them. The track was gorgeous, smooth, not a single hole, I loved it, I wish it was like that every race.”
Then he thanked his wife, Icon Pistons, his father and pit crew, even though they didn’t show up for the race.
One tradition the track has is the meet and greet with the drivers before the mains begin. There is a short set of stairs so fans can get to a level part of the track where the drivers will sign autographs and allow youngsters to sit in the cars.
