LOVELOCK, NV (Sept. 23) – After 14 years the desert racers of MRANN returned to Lovelock thanks to the Mason Valley Dirt Squirts. The club staged the second round of the fall series, the Fix A Flat 100, just outside this rural Nevada town.
The big bikes competed over a loop that was somewhere between 46 and 50 miles long. There were rocks, sand and after the long dry summer, dust but fortunately there was also a breeze blowing.
As usual the riders in each of the three classes lined up side-by-side in their respective groups. First off were the Experts, followed by the Amateur and finally the Novice riders.

After the race winner Steve Tichenor explained some confusion on the second lap, “Kind of ironic isn’t it, think I got a little over confident that I knew the course and next thing I know I’m off and not seeing markings. The course is marked really well but when you have a virgin trail and lost of bushes it makes hard to mark and the next thing I know I’m off the course. Backtracked once, got back right away then about five miles later the same thing.
“So I just regrouped, focused from there and had a pretty good race over all. Drew and I have been having a year-long battle, that guy, he knows how to ride a bike. Had a good start, got the hole shot and these dust free conditions to my advantage. Rode my butt off the first lap
Then he thanked is wife, family, Mike Furlong, Kevin Brittner, Rim Benders MC for the pit support, Reno Motor Sports, DDC, Number Tech and Chick Felay (sp?) of Sparks.
Unlike previous races where a banner is held up then dropped this time a shotgun start was used. As everyone waited Ryan Albert held up a shotgun then fired it.
A shotgun start meant that when Ryan Albert fired his the racers in a line started their race.
That was the signal for riders to kick their mounts to life and tear off toward a pickup truck where they would pass on the right then turn onto the course.
On point was former series champion Steve Tichenor followed by one of the series young lions, Drew Chattin. These two soon turned it into their own private contest.
Heading into the pits at the end of the first lap Tichenor had over a two-minute advantage on Chattin. From there it was another 10 minutes before third place Austin Wilson arrived just a minute ahead of Chris Maas, who raced a 150cc bike and was holding off bigger bikes.
Riders are classed as finishers if they complete one lap but to win or get a good ranking one needs to complete both laps. No matter what their decision was all riders needed to ride through the timing chute since transponders were used for scoring.
In the end Tichenor won the race and finished 12 minutes ahead of Chattin, who had an exciting second lap. About 12 minutes later third place Wilson took the checkered flag and he was just over a minute ahead of fourth place Chris Maas.
Drew Chattin, despite a get off during the second lap, finished second overall.
After getting his finisher pin Chattin said, “I was pushing really to catch him (Tichenor), made a mistake and went over the bars. That just killed me so decided to pick my own pace and just stay in second and hope that third doesn’t catch me.”
Then he thanked his parents, sisters and all this friends as well as DDC, 805 and Moto Source.
Slightly over a minute behind Chattin was Austin Wilson, who finished in third place.
“Wow, it was a fun course, it was just dusty so if you got a bad start that was a butt kicker for sure,” he said. ” I got a terrible start and was about 15th or 20th and I was just fighting through the dust all day. There was definitely some fun single tracks, some cool sand washes that were just nice and smooth but some of the silt ruts out there had hidden rocks in them and I crashed a lot. And when I got clean air I was so beat from fighting through the dust that I was struggling to hang on.”
Then he thanked his parents for bringing him out there, his girl friend and Reno Motor Sports, Delany Drive Components, DH1 and MX Trophies.
Austin Wilson had to fight the dust but hung on for a third place finish.
Fourth place Chris Maas had a lucky day as he won the drawing for a new shotgun. In the race he ended up only eight seconds ahead of fifth place Jack C. Reader.
“I did win and not I’ll go learn how to shoot it,” he said. “It’s not a dirt bike but there’s plenty of stuff to be done on the desert when we’re out here so riding dirt bikes and shooting guns sounds like a good combination. The dirt bikes are probably more dangerous but I kept on two wheels and finished fourth today which was my best finish in quite some time so for a little 150 to be fourth overall is pretty impressive.”
He may have sewn up the 200cc championship and this will give him back-to-back titles.
Seventh place Josh Cook was the first amateur to complete both laps.
First amateur to cross the finish line was Josh Cook, who rides a 4-Stroke bike. His seventh place finish was just four seconds short of taking sixth place overall.
“The race was all right but that moon dust was pretty gnarly and I fell off twice,” he said. “That was fun, it’s a really good race, it was a little trick following the course sometimes so you just take a gamble and go to where you think you need to be.”
Then he thanked his wife that was watching their daughter at home.
The Novice finish wasn’t official when this article was posted. First in the class to cross the finish was Terry Scheetz, who now is listed 15th overall, but he admitted to passing a check point because he couldn’t see the stop sign.
After that he stopped at every one, including the missed checkpoint on his second lap. It will be up to the referee to determine if any penalty will come from this.
“I didn’t see the stop sign at all then the second time I saw it. I mean there was a lot of dust the first time around,” Scheetz said. “The race was great, excellent course and a lot of fun.”
Then he thanked Ryan and the whole crew that went out to mark the course.
Depending on what happens Jesse White now is listed in 17th place might be the Novice winner.
“The race was good, really dusty,” White said. “Just tried to get through it. I crashed on the first lap in the sand.”
Then he thanked his parents and sister as well as RMS, Number Tech, VSR Swag and CMS.
Ageless Pete Prichard won the 60+ class with his 53rd place finish.
At the top of the age scale was Pete Prichard, who finished 53rd for the day. Other age group finishers were John Levie in 30+, Jack C. Reader in 40+ and Steve Morgan the 50+ top finisher.
There was only one woman racing Sunday and that was Beth Legenbauer, who came home 51st.
“The race was fun, it was good, challenging, really tiring, it was hot today,” she said. “The dust on the first lap was tough to deal with, the silt wasn’t too bad today as the second lap was way better.”
Then she thanked her husband, Tank Slappers, RMS and CMS.
Beth Legenbauer was the only woman racing on Sunday.
- Saturday is for the youngest riders, women, bombers and the team race. These classes race on a shorter course than the one used on Sunday.
Topping the team race was the duo of Steve Tichenor and Drew Chattin.
In the combined race 100cc expert Carson Calder was first overall while less than a second behind him was the woman’s winner Camie Ingram. The Bomber winner was Scott Martin, who ended up 5th overall while the first 65cc rider was 13th place Jordan Mass.
Now everyone gets a few weeks to clean the dust off their bikes and themselves. Then Rimbenders and Cheaters combine forces to present the Zombie Falls Hare Scrambles on Halloween weekend.
