STEAD, NV (Aug.5) – Desert Park Raceway was alive with kart racing as the Northern Nevada Kart Club (NNKC) staged its fifth race of this season. The race was not only important to the local drivers but it brought some from California as this was the final time the visitors could race here before the KPX event on the 18th.
There were at least three “races of the day,” and one of them featured the younger drivers in Junior 2 LO206. And the final lap had an incident that could have gone wrong for all concerned.
After talking a minute or two to calm down winner Cain Fredricks said, “It was exciting, everyone was close again and we were passing a lot. He’s get me down the straight cause I’d get a bad exit and I’d pass him (Boden Barnwell) the next corner, it as crazy.”
Also in the mix was Chase Dulude as he would be second, then third and second again. All three were very close until the final lap when they went over Turn 5 with Barnwell in the lead.
“The last lap I had to throw it in there, I had try and make a pass. But it really didn’t work out for him,” he said.
Then he thanked Nevada Kart Sport and his other sponsors, who he was unable to think of right then because he was still excited from the race.
Eleven karts took the green but exiting Turn 2 there was a scramble although everyone was able to continue. Ahead of the pack Barnwell was on point with Dulude and Fredricks close behind.
Around the mid-way point in the 14-lap race both Fredricks and Barnwell would swap places and some times Dulude would also make a pass and take over second.
It all changed after the white flag when Barnwell was leading the trip going up hill toward Turn 5. Fredricks chose that place to make his move and the resulting contact put both him and Barnwell off the track.
Dulude took the gift but Fredricks was able to keep the lead while Barnwell slipped back into third behind Dulude and they finished in that order.
The other two races of the day came in the Senior/Master LO206 main. Here two classes are combined in a single race that had the most karts as 18 of them took the green.
On the green the field roared through Turns 1 and 2 then streamed toward 3. Up front Tyler Agan and Jacob Ciari led the charge until Alec Beaudoin inserted himself into the second spot.
Soon after things got rolling Agan began to put distance between himself and any other possible challenger. Behind the leader the race for second was heating up.
Further down the standings the race for the Masters victory was turning into a nose-to-tail duel. Visitor Harrell Fischer had his hands full holding off Doug Hunter and even though they were ninth and tenth in the overall standings both were one and two in their class.
Up front Steve Dow was also in the mix until he was almost run off the road late in the race and dropped several places.
At the checkered flag Agan won the overall victory followed by Caira and Beaudoin.
“It was a little bit more boring than I wanted it to be but I’ll take it,” Agan said. “I’m here to do some data gathering so we have a good shot. I’m tied for the KPX championship lead so I’ve got to get all the practice I can get.”
Then he thanked Agan motorsports and his father,
Behind the leaders Fischer and Hunter were going at it until the checkered flag where they finished in that order.
“After winning the race Fischer, who hails from Sacramento, said, “He was on me the whole time I could feel him, I could hear him, I could see him every once and a while. I think that why I went so fast as Doug (Hunter) was pushing me around the whole track.”
Fischer was very up beat about Desert Park and gave it a good recommendation.
“I love this place, it’s awesome, it’s technical, it’s fast, it’s one of the best tracks around,” he said. “I’d advise everybody that hasn’t been here to come on and get some of this track. It took me a long time to go fast and now I’m starting to get it a little bit. We’ll be here for KPX for sure.”
Then he thanked Nevada Kart Sport as they give him everything he needs as well as his girl friend and the club for putting on the race.
Only three F-125 shifter karts were present on this day. At first Jeff Wamre was on point until Dean Andrews took it over and went on to score the victory while the third on driven by Dennis Hill fell out with some kind of problem.
After winning the race Andrews said, “Jeff he always gets launched off the starts so I knew I was going to have to get by him so I just found a gap I chose to exploit. Pretty fast all day and I knew it would be one on one battles between people but I knew going against Jeff would be pretty tough.”
Then he thanked his father Scott Andrews for making his racing happen.
The KA100 main had two classes racing in. Up front it was Zack Rivera as he motored off to the next area code but behind him there was a battle for second.
For the entire race Mike McMullen, who races in the Senior Class was hounded by Gino Sandoval, a Junior Class racer. Lap after lap they tore around the track with McMullen hanging on to the spot while Sandoval was close behind.
In fact a large blanket could have covered both of them they were so close.
In the end Rivera notched another victory while McMullen ended up second and Sandoval, who finished first in class was third overall.
Asked about the race McMullen said, “Finally a real second place.”
Years ago the TAG class was one of the mainstays of go racing with the NNKC. Sadly that class virtually disappeared but now there’s an effort to bring it back.
Currently TAG is an exhibition class and since there were only two both drivers this day they opted for a 20-lap heat/main race. In the end Mike Arnold got the victory with Mitch Kennedy second.
Both men are trying to breath life back into this class. Arnold owns a few of them and both noted there are several in the area that are just gathering dust.
They would encourage anyone that has a TAG kart and isn’t racing right now to dust it off and come out to the NNKC events. At one time this class had 30 karts and was divided into three divisions.
With some luck and effort both Arnold and Kennedy hope to bring the class back from extinction.
Only three Junior 1 LO206 racers were on hand when they began their main. Jack Schrady was in command from the green and never headed.
Behind him was last year’s champion Brooks Anderline, who did his best but just could not close the gap with Schrady. Coming home third was Collyn Hill.
Now, except for some testing on the weekday evenings Desert Park is silent. But on Saturday, August 18th it will come alive again.
It’s actually a two-day event. Friday is for practice then on Saturday the KPX will race at the track. The action begins at 3 p.m. and goes into the night.
