FALLON, NV (May 27) – The Reno chapter of the Over The Hill Gang (OTHG) hosted the second round of National Motocross Championship. Its two days of racing with a traditional BBQ and party Saturday night.
Friday night’s rain help set up the dirt leading into a cool and windy Saturday. On Sunday the temperature warmed up although there was still a breeze.
The event consists of two motos daily and a rider’s total score determines their final finishing position in each class. Like golf one wants the lowest score, which is how they finish each moto.
As an example a rider sweeping all four of their races will have a score of 4, earning 1 for each victory. Sometimes however the rider won’t sweep all their motos but if second place ishigher score the win the overall championship for this round.
In many races classes are combined so for this series transponders are used although there were some problems with that on Saturday. Fortunately the scoring crew had things fixed for Sunday.
When the final motos began Sunday the first class up were the 52+ Novice riders. It was all Dr Ron Medlock as he just left everyone in his dust both days.
Runner up Brian Kingler tried to make a race of it but ended up a distant second. After the checkered he said, to Medlock, “I had nothing for you.”
For Medlock, a Chiropractor, the race completed a sweep of the weekend and he said, “I started with the Gang in 2016, evalued into 45+ Novice and broke my left leg out at Hollister in ’16, back on the bike in six weeks. Took first in the South Nationals, then first in the Valley and was bumped back into 45+ Novice.
“I turned52 so decided to go into the 52+ Novice and it’s been a great a great group of guys.
Then he thanked Jason Horn a new member of the Gang in California that is camping with him this weekend and added thanks to announcer Gary Plaatje. Medlock then added he’s using Supercross great Chad Reed’s number.
When the next race was up it combed the 58+ Novice, 65+ Intermediate and 65+ Novice classes. After the gate dropped the first six riders took off and started their own private race.
At the end however the host OTHG chapter had two of its members, Bob Hurst and Karry Barnes, winning their classes as well as the overall victory.
“That was fun, lot of fun,” Hurst said after taking the checkered flag, which gave him a sweep. “The race was great, track is good, they prepped it again nice for us and made it really good.”
Then he thanked his wife, “she’s the greatest,” for her help and support.
The third race Sunday also combined three Intermediate classes;, 30+, 38+ and 45+. Up front however the first two riders were close but in the end Sedric Robinson swept the weekend so he not only won the overall but the 30+ Intermediate class.
“I got the championship this week,” he said. “The race was rough, the track is real rough and I like it rough.”
Then he thanked he parents, Fine Line Powder Coating and Project 701, Gavin Clouser.
Second place in that class was Danny Martin so it was a Reno one-two. The 38+ Intermediate winner was Sedanna Losey in 30+ while Chad Olsen took the 45+ Intermediate victory.
The next race combined expert classes; 30+, 38+ and 45+. Layne “Hole Shot,” Kolbet led all the starts for the 45+ group and in the second moto Sunday even led for a couple of laps until another local chapter member Tony Fagundes took the point.
In the other two classes Garrett Law won the 30+ honors while Kevin Hargett took the 38+ victory.
After taking the checkered flag over moto winner another local chapter winner Kevin Hargett said, “It’s a home track for me and I’ve turned a lot of laps here. This gave me a sweep all the way. The track is awesome, moisture is good, can’t ask for anything better.”
Then he thanked his friend Ed Brink and family members that support him.
Tony Fagundes swept the 45+ Expert class and after the dust settled said, “I got a sweep, it was a fun race. I didn’t get a very good start, got knocked down in the first turn so I went from dead last and worked my way up trying to pick them off. The track was pretty rough but I ride out here all the time, just followed the Stillmock brother’s lines and just went for it.”
Then he thanked his wife for putting up with his racing, 111 Concepts for making sure his bike is ready, which included lending a fork set to get through the weekend. He added Just One Helmets, Fly Gear and Western Power Sports are other sponsors..
Four beginner classes were combined in race #5 and they were 30+, 38+, 45+ and 52+. In the end Fallon rider Blair Richardson, another local OTHG rider, scored a sweep of the weekend and won the 45 Beginner title.
“The race was good, today was good. It’s only my fourth race so I’m a little surprised that that I did as well as I did but I enjoyed the heck out of it,” he said. “Only crashed twice and had to come from behind twice.”Richardson considers his fitness the most important thing and he works out at Power Stroke Cross Fit in Fallon. He also appreciated his parents and other club members that were cheering him on.
Next up was a three-class Novice race that had 30+, 38+ and 45+ riders competing in this moto.
Zach Howell, another local OTHG member, won the race as well as swept the weekend.
“I wrecked in practice, got landed on, pretty sure I broke my thumb,” he said. “I just want to thank BVH, Taber Products, my buddy Danny Martin for letting me ride his bike the last two motos and my wife and daughter.”
Race #7 is another multi class affair the three Master classes; 30+, 38+ and 45+ all competing.
When the gate dropped veteran Scott Stillmock took off with Nick McBride right behind him. They left the rest in their dust and finally McBride got the point as Stillmock faded, although he was way ahead of third place.
After the checkered flag Stillmock pulled up, congratulated the McBride an said, “Gave it everything I had but it wore me out doing it. But we were cooking it.”
Then McBride said, “It was fun, the dude (Stillmock) hauls ass and it’s a blast to be out here racing the Over The Hill Gang stuff. We’re all friends, drinking beer afterwards and it’s awesome.”
Then he thanked Flow Vision, Valley OTHG and all his friends and families.
Next up was a double dose of the 52+ and 58+ Intermediate racers. In the end DarrenTownsley won the 52+ Class although Mike Maciel won the final moto. In 58+ the winner was Reno OTHG member Chris Ober.
After taking the checkered Ober said, “Yes, swept it, Hangtown was the same thing. I think I’m going to go on and do the National. You know the track was in pretty good shape but there are the usual holes on the landings or just before the jumps.
Then he thanked Moto Source and RMS for their support.
Next up was a mix of 52+ Expert and Masters as well as 58+ Expert and Masters.
Ron Thorton and Tim Tynan won the 52+ Expert and Masters classes while Kevin Kearney and Randy Law won the 58+ Expert and Masters division.
Taking the overall was Tim Tynan from Georgetown, California.
“Had a clean sweep,” he said.
Then he thanked Shock Therapy, Cycle West, Click Suspension, DT1 Air Filters and Mika Metals
Finally the OTHG racing ended with a Women’s race that included Beginner, Novice and Intermediate classes. Topping the field was Jennifer Rockenstein.
After sweeping the weekend she said, “All 1’s, all the way through. It was a lot of fun, had come competition today which was kind of nice. Over all the track is awesome, it’s a fast track but everything was set up nice.”
Then she thanked Roseville Yamaha, Mike Metals and 100% Goggles.
Supporting the event were three classes of big bike racers as well as two other small bike classes. The winners and finishing orders according to their points are in the results.
Now everyone heads home until the next OTHG national event, which is on Labor Day weekend.
