FERNLEY, NV (May 13) – Racers competing in the Battle Born MX (BBMX) spring series returned to the Sandbox for the final time. Rain the previous night set the dirt up for some hard racing.
One class that featured hard and close racing was the 250/450 pro motos. Two riders kind of turned the second moto into their own private duel although third place wasn’t that far behind them.
When the gate dropped Austin Johnson and Austin Serpa took off with Dylan Galliett not far behind in third. Lap after lap they tore around the course usually less than a second apart.
On the final lap Johnson managed to squeeze a gap of about two seconds over Serpa, who had a gap over Galliett. All three finished in that order.
Asked if he knew how close Serpa was to him, Johnson said, “Oh yea, oh yea. The track is easy, not too rough at all.”
Then he thanked, his parents, grandparents and Cliff Campbell at Menace Motorsports and Shawn Palmer.
Later Serpa would win the Big Bike Open moto giving him a sweep of that class while Johnson won the 2-Stroke Open motos.
When the second Schoolboy moto started Trevor Hargett was in the lead but right behind him was Dylan Thorwaldson the moto one winner. It took only a lap before Thorwaldson was on point although Hargett chased him to the end but had to settle for the runner up spot.
“That was a good race, I had a good battle with him until he made a mistake and I capitalized on it,” he said.”The track’s holding up good, getting rough and one the outsides its getting pretty whooped out. First off Happy Mother’s Day to my mom and I wanted to thank my dad and sisters out here for supporting me, Moto Source of course and Fox.”
Thorwaldson also swept the 250/450 Junior class.
Years ago the Sandbox, as the track is known, was the House of Stillmock as Scott and his brother Butch ruled and most times were supreme. This weekend was kind of a replay of those days.
Stillmock went on to win both Club motos with Zach Howell ending up second overall ahead of Sedanna Losey. Although he was the only rider in the 38+ Master Class, Stillmock was first overall in the 38+ race that combined three classes.
After winning the second Club moto he said, “I haven’t been out for a long time racing, probably eight months. Thought I’d come play in the dirt a little bit and it feels good out here. With a new shop, One Eleven Concepts in Fernley, opened up I’ve been so busy but wanted to come play anyways.”
After his final moto of the day Stillmock related how his timing and racing just got better every moto he competed in.
This weekend none of the Women A riders showed up so it was an all Women B show. Hayden Losey came out on top after swapping wins with Lucy Moran, who won the first moto.
They were in a combined event with the 45+ Junior riders, won by Troy Hawkins and the 85cc Supermini, which was won by Colton Chamness, who also won the 85cc Open race as well.
At the top of the age ladder Chris Ober was the lone 58+ Intermediate rider while Larry Mulock was the winner in the 52+ Junior class.
Moving to the bottom of the age scale in the Pee Wee ranks the winners were Garrett Berrington in Beginners, Richard Duncan in the Juniors and Pierson Potratz winning the Open races.
While the Pee Wees race 50cc bikes that don’t need to shift those moving into the 65cc class have to learn how to shift. Zachery O’Neill was the Beginner winner and Rowdy Richardson won both the Junior and Open classes.
Next step on the racing ladder are the 85cc bikes, the fastest small bike class. Otto Acbrecht won the beginner class while Rodger Facey was the Junior winner.
Colton Chamness was one of those riders scoring a double as he won in 85cc Open as well as Supermini.
The last race of the day ended on a high note with a good battle in 125/250 Junior as Chase Rychlik was pursued from the start to the finish first by Payton Kenneson, who ended up third after Kai Kapahee took over second. That was also combined with the Big Bike open where Austin Serpa would finish first overall with Austin Johnson in second.
Now everyone gets a couple of weeks off as the final round of the spring series isn’t until the weekend of June 2/3 when that race will be out at Winnemucca.
