RENO, NV (March 14) – This week’s Racing Preview highlights events in our area; a second round for an off road series plus a show and meet. Nationally one of the classic sports cars races happens in the east and another major series is in the west.
We have a variety of things happening in Northwest Nevada.
To the east of Reno the desert racers that compete in MRANN will be outside of Toulon, which is east of Lovelock. It’s the Wild Horse Hare Scrambles hosted by the Western States Racing Association.
Saturday gets rolling at 9 a.m. with the Pee Wee race followed by the Mini Bikes, V Women, Vintage and Bombers. The day ends around 1 p.m. with the popular Team Race.
Sunday is for the big bikes as they tackle the 40-mile course with a 10 a.m. start time. As usual a rider must complete one loop to be classed as a finisher.
A bit closer to home starting at 8 a.m. Saturday the Fernley 95A Speedway is having a combined event. Not only is it a time to test and tune but there its also a car show and swap meet and hopefully the weather won’t affect it too much.
Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon was going to have a play day but that was canceled due to the track not being able to plow new material into the racing surface.
This weekend, from Friday through Sunday it’s the annual Al Lockett Reno Expo 2018. In addition to all the outdoor things like boats and RV’s there is a good section devoted to off road trucks and equipment. The show opens at 11 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Several groups working to keep the access to public lands will have booths.
Finally on Sunday, starting at 10 a.m., Reno Cars and Coffee will have another of their meets. This time the location is the Starbucks at 1610 Robb Drive on the west side of town.
Due to rain all three motocross tracks in Northern California are closed but on Sunday one or more of them might have practice sessions. So before leaving it is suggested one call the hot line at, 775-265-7223.
This weekend both TV Land and the Internet have several events to watch.
Thursday gets rolling at 8:25 a.m. as www.fanschoice.tv broadcasts the IMCA Porsche GT3 Cup #2 from Sebring. Then for the two-wheeled fans, the network streams the AFT-Daytona TT beginning at 11 a.m. followed at 1:15 p.m. by the Porsche GT3 Cup #1 race.
This weekend NASCAR ends its western swing in Fontana, California. On Friday Fox Sports 1 kicks things off with NASCAR Cup practice stating at 11:35 followed by two practice sessions for the Xfinity series.
Then at 4:15 p.m. the network airs NASCAR Cup qualifying followed at 5:30 p.m. with NHRA qualifying from Gainesville, Florida.
Over on the Internet at 1:15 p.m. Fans Choice has the IMSA Prototype Challenge race from Sebring, Florida.
Saturday gets off to an early start at 7:30 a.m. as Fox Sports 1 begins coverage of the IMSA Weather Tech Sports Car event also known as the 12 Hours of Sebring. Coverage switches to Fox Sports 2 at 9:30 a.m. then resumes on that channel at 3 p.m. until the event’s finish.
For the two-wheeled crowd this year’s Daytona 200 motocycle race starts at 10 a.m. and will again be streamed on Fans Choice.
Fox Sports 1 has the Xfinity race from Fontana beginning at 2 p.m. followed at 5 p.m. by the AMA Supercross race from St. Louis. Things end at 8 p.m. with more NHRA qualifying from Florida.
Fox gets Sunday rolling at 12:30 a.m. with the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race from Fontana. The question to be answered is if Bakersfield native Kevin Harvick make it four in a row and end the western swing with a sweep.
Finally the weekend ends at 4 p.m. when Fox Sports 1 airs the final rounds of the NHRA Gaternationals from Gainseville, Florida.
That’s it for now. Have a safe weekend everyone and enjoy the races and activities.
