RENO, NV (Feb. 14) – Racing Preview has good news this time around; racing has started! Yes it has, both locally as well as nationally.
The first local event is actually pretty low key on Sunday when Reno Coffee and Cars has another get together by the Starbucks at 1610 Robb Drive. As usual it begins around 10 a.m. and they ask you not do donuts or peal out in the parking lot and please don’t rev your engines too much.
That way the hosts will enjoy keeping those meetings at that location. It’s a great way to see some fantastic looking cars and engines that have had a bunch of work done to them.
The two-wheeled crowd has a bunch going on this weekend.
East of Reno, about 10 miles north of the Nightengale exit off I-80 that’s east of Fernley MRANN begins its 2018 season. It’s the Wildfire 100 put on by the Trail Blazers and as usual is a two-day event.
Saturday’s action begins at 10 a.m. with the Pee Wee race followed at 11 a.m. by the Mini bikes, V Women and Bombers. Then at 2 p.m. the very popular Team Races will be flagged off.
The big bikes get their turn starting at 10 a.m. Sunday and they race over a long course. There is a chance that some of the course will be in snow.
Over the Hill motocross racers get their first crack at a Loretta Lynn Area Qualifier present by Rep Racing at Riverfront MX Park.
There is no practice Thursday but only parking from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday gates open at 9 a.m. then from noon until 5 p.m. there will be practice.
On Saturday gates open at 7 a.m., practice begins at 8 a.m. with racing to follow. Same schedule Sunday but the gates open at 6:30 a.m.
REPORTER’S NOTE: Good luck to the riders from Northern Nevada.
E Street MX Park has practice on both tracks from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Prairie City has a practice from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Thursday then has the same schedule as E Street for Saturday and Sunday practice sessions.
Over on the Internet www.fanschoice.tv has a bunch of oval races from the New Smyrna Speedway. It’s part of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing series.
All the races have a 4:30 p.m. start time from Thursday through Saturday.
Of course Daytona gets the big attention this weekend as NASCAR officially begins its 2018 season at the World Center of Speed. And Fox Sports 1 is doing most of the heavy lifting for the weekend.
Thursday Camping World Truck Series starts that day off at 11:30 a.m. with practice followed by NASCAR Race Hub and another practice session for the trucks.
Then at 4 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has the NASCAR Can-Am Duels. These two races set the field for the Daytona 500 as Sunday’s qualifying sessions only set the front row.
With some drivers having to race their way into the 500 it should be a wild time.
On Friday the trucks qualify starting at 1:30 p.m. then race beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Saturday gets going early as qualifying for the Xfinity race starts at 6:30 a.m. followed at 11 a.m. with the race itself.
Then at 5 p.m. the network airs the Monster Energy AMA Supercross race from Arlington, Texas.
On Sunday the weekend winds up with the Great American Race, the Daytona 500. This time Fox will broadcast it beginning at 11:30 a.m. and as usually is a wild race.
Finally the weekend ends on CBS Sports at 3 p.m. with an Off Road Racing show.
That’s it for now spring is here as racing has begun again and we’re pretty well out of the Re-Run Zone.
OTHER RACING NEWS:
