MOTOCROSS SEASON STARTS AT THE SANDBOX

The first race of the new motocross season happened on Sunday.

FERNLEY, March 12 – Motocross season began here as the first round of the new Battle Born MX series started at the Sandbox, or the Wadsworth/Fernley Lion’s Club Motocross track as it’s formally known.

There were so many riders on hand that it took 19 motos to get all the classes in.

One of the wilder starts happened during the first 250/450 Intermediate and Pro moto. Heading into the first turn one rider went down collecting several others, including one that went sliding off course.

BBMX - First Turn tangle.

When the first 250/450 Intermediate & Pro moto began over half the field was involved in a first turn tangle.

Fortunately everyone got up although Sparks rider Trent Cocking was unable to continue.

Up front Collin McHaney from Fallon was on point and holding off Aaron Siminoe; they finished in that order with Julian Domingo from Sparks winning the Intermediate class.

Things were different when the second moto took off with Siminoe on point and rolling. No one was able to close on him and that win gave him the overall victory for the day while Domingo scored his second Intermediate victory.

BBMX - Aaron Siminoe

Aaron Siminoe on his way to winning the 250/450 Pro class.

“This one was a lot smoother start for sure, the track’s really smooth right now and it’s hard to pick up time when everyone’s going the same speed,” he said. “The track workers did an amazing job keeping it watered and fixed up so the track’s nice and safe for everyone to ride. I kind of got a good start and kept pushing the whole eight-laps and trying to get ready for Outdoors.”

Then he thanked his parents, girlfriend Vanessa and those that have been helping him. Then he listed sponsors Dunlop Tires, Schmidt Performance, and his grandfather for picking up the bike for him.

In motocross the rider’s finishes are added up and that’s what determines their final placing. For Siminoe a second then a first gave him the day’s victory.

During the day several classes literally filled the starting gate and one of them was the 125/250 Beginner class. This speaks well of the future for motocross in our area.

In the first moto Jared Mariscal won while Wyatt Ward took the second race. However Mariscal’s first and third places finishes trumped Ward’s fifth place finish in the first race even though he won the second.

The 125/250 Juniors were another gate filling class with 30 riders on the line for both motos. Kyle Brink won the first moto then fell to 23rd in the second giving him a 15th place over all.

Up front Dylan Thorwaldson was second in the first moto but won the second and the overall victory. It wasn’t easy however as Thorwaldson had Mikey and Danny Hillyer very close for most of the moto and they ended up one-two-three for the day.

BBMX - 125/250 Junior.

“They were right on me, I could tell,” Thorwaldson said while he was catching his breath.

Then he thanked Moto Source, parents and sisters as well as everyone that supports him.

Moving up a class the 250/450 class had 23 starters for both motos. Kyle Brink, from Fernley, swept both motos followed by second and third place Hunter Roberts and Blayne Herrera.

Another large class of up and coming younger riders is 85cc Beginner. There were 21 riders in the first moto and 20 started the second.

Up front Cole Palotas from Carson City won followed by Aren B. Duncan and Zackary W. Rosenthal. There riders have graduated from the 65cc division and will be working their way up to the big bikes within a couple of years.

In the 65cc Class Brock Ward won the Beginner divisions while Chase Cannizzaro scored victories in both the 65 Junior and Open.

Moving down to the youngest riders Hadleigh Kahabka won both Pee Wee Open races while Aidan Conner, from Gilbert, Arizona was second.

BBMX - Pee Wee Open.

Hadleigh Kahabka won the Pee Wee open overall after winning both of her motos.

A little later in the day all three Pee Wee divisions were in one race and William Saindon was the Beginner winner, Joseph Mitchell the Junior winner and Tanner Ines was the lone Intermediate racers.

As they get older these youngsters will move into the 65cc class.

It was a close finish in that second combined Pee Wee moto as Tanner Innes led first then Joseph Mitchell took the point after the white flag. On that final lap Ines would get back into the lead to take the win.

The 52+ Class is at the top end of the age brackets and their winners were David Thomas in Junior, Tom Alexander in Intermediate and Scott Chick in Expert.

The Schoolboy motos also had some close racing but in the end T.J. Taylor used a second and first to claim the overall victory. The lead group was never far from each other as they tore around the course.

In the overall finishing order Julian Domingo, who won the first moto, was second followed by Garrett Hueftle and Dylan Thorwaldson.

The only triple winner for the day was Jeff Simas as he won the Club motos as well as 30+ Expert and 25+ Open.

The Women’s Class was a sister act with Sedanna Losey taking the first moto after being chased by her sister Shami Potratz. When the gate dropped for their second moto Potratz was on point as they tore around the track.

BBMX - Womens.

The Women’s Class was a duel between two sisters. Sedanna Losey (24) won the first moto but her sister Shami Potratz took the seond as well as the overall victory.

After a race long chase Losey took the lead but Potratz was able to get past in the final half of the last lap and win the race, giving her the overall victory. After taking the checkered flag both stopped and congratulated each other on a good race.

“Oh I could hear her (Sedanna) the whole moto,” Potratz said after taking the checkered flag. “I was trying to just focus ahead and not worry what was behind me. And she did get around me one time, on the very last lap and I was able to pass her back about two straights before the finish.”

Then she thanked her husband Chris for being there and supporting her, Moto Source, NMS, and her family as they watch her children while she’s racing.

It was also a great day for the track medics as they didn’t have to transport anyone and only had to check in a few riders that went down.

When asked, OTHG chapter president Layne Kolbet said he was very pleased with the weekend. He did mention there were a couple of challenges but everyone got past those.

Over the past few years there have been around 250 riders show up for this race. However this year 305 were on hand to compete and get the season started.

Next up for BBMX is the weekend of April 1 and 2. The host club will be the Old Timers and once again racing will be at Fernley.
