MOTOCROSS SEASON IN REVIEW

Time to look back at the 2016 motocross season, celebrate the champions and start getting ready for the 2017 season.

The motocross season review wraps up both series, spring and fall, in 2016. And hopefully it’s a forecast of more racing to come this year.

This time around there was no Sandbox Grand Prix, which is a fun race for bragging rights and has been very popular.

The spring round began at Exit 28 then moved to Fernley, Winnemucca and back to Exit 28. The last two round began at Fernley in April and ended in Winnemucca in May.

775 MX Classic Series.

Both the spring and fall MX 775 Classic series had some large fields for many classes.

There were some close races in several classes but some of the younger riders had the closest points finishes of the series.

In the 65cc Beginner division Declan Kahabka edged out Tovin Kahabka by only a single point. Nakana Domingo also edged our Jared Mariscal by a single point in the 85cc Open class but Ian Knight got the first place trophy be virtue of riding in five of the six rounds.

Chad Heishman was able to claim the 125-250 Intermediate title when he finished four points ahead of Tony Giusti.

The 250-450 Beginner had another points reversal as Austin Schleyelmilch wound up as the points leader with 77 markers but Tony Van Dover, with 73 points, competed in the most races and as a result is the class champion.

Michael Jepsen won the 250-450 Intermediate crown when he finished five points ahead of Chad Heishman. In the 250-450 Pro division Justin Minich was the winner with 56 points to Coleman Smith’s 53.

After the series finished the local Over The Hill Gang chapter staged its traditional Memorial Day race when the club hosted a round of their national series. A few weeks later the now reborn Old Timers Chapter hosted a round of their national series.

As usual there was the summer break as riders competed in series over in California as well as Loretta Lynn qualifiers and the Amateur Nationals. They also rode in qualifiers for the races at Mammoth.

The fall series began on September 18th at Exit 28 then moved to Winnemucca for the second round. After that the clubs, Old Timers and Over The Hill Gang swapped events at Fernley.

Rain forced the cancellation of the final round at Exit 28 on November 6th. Then the following weekend the final round was canceled for a variety of reasons on Saturday so the season ended with only four rounds of racing.

When the final points were in the fall series were totaled four of the youngest riders had the closest finish.

Richard Duncan won the 50cc 4 to 6 year old class with a total of 57 points. Not far behind were Kallen Toland with 51, Pierson Potratz with 49 and Hadleigh Kahabka, who earned 48 points.

For Chase Cannizzaro, who won one title in the spring the fall series was very good. He won championships in 65cc Junior, 65cc Open and 85cc Junior classes.

Dylan Thorwaldson topped the Supermini division with 64 points but Danny Hillyer was close behind with 60. In the 125-250 class Michael Hillyer won with 48 points while Thorwaldson was second with 43 and Kyle Brink ended up third with 41 points.

Another close finish was in the 30+ Junior division where Matthew Sorhouet was the winner with 49 points followed by Scott Chick with 74 and Matt Wilkins, who earned 43 points.

In the 250-450 Pro ranks winner Chad Heishman only race twice but earned that title. Three other riders only competed once during the series and the ended up in a three-way tie.

During the sprint Sedanna Losey won one title then moved up a class and was the fall champion in the 38+ Intermediate division.

Now that winter is upon us there is no racing in our area but soon plans will be made for races. And if all goes well in March the Sandbox Grand Prix may return.OTHER RACING NEWS
