DESERT PARK RACEWAY: NNKC ROUND 8

The NNKC season is in the stretch run, points are tight in some classes and after this race there is only one left to decided championships.

STEAD (Sept. 10) – Desert Park Raceway was alive with kart racing on this Saturday as around 40 drivers, some from California, turned up to challenge the course. Unfortunately the F-80 shifter drivers decided not to compete so that class would not be on the track but should return for the final race of the season.

One of the day’s best races was the final one where the Senior/Sumo LO206 took to the track. On the green 13 driver roared into turn 1 with Zachary Rivera leading but Nicholas Grossi was right behind him followed by two other driver including Stephanie Callahan in fourth.

A few laps later first, second and third got strung out a bit. Then past the half way mark the top three began to close up.

Eventually Grossi took over the lead then he drifted wide in Turn one and Rivera took back the point while Beaudon grabbed second.

Grossi was soon back in second and pressing Rivera with Beaudon a very close third. Heading for the white flag they were nose-to-tail.

NNKC: Sr LO206 main.

In the final laps of the Senior LO206 main Nicholas Grossi (0) leads Zach Rivera (8) and Alec Beaudon.

During the final pass through Turn 4 Grossi was able to take the lead from Rivera and got a small gap. They finished that way with Grossi taking the victory with Rivera and Beaudon second and third.

After the post-race weigh in Grossi, who comes from Modesto, California, said, “I knew Zach was going to be tough to beat, we’ve been racing in the KPX series all year long and we’ve been competitors for quite a bit. I just knew we were going to have a good race. In Turn 4 got on the inside just held it as much as I could, we just both stuck and that was it.”

Then he thanked his father, Bob Grossi Construction, Cole Nelson and CNR Racing.

The next closest race was in the Tag Masters/Senior main. On the green brothers Steve and Mike Ryckebosch took off and were never more than a kart length apart but most of the time the gap could be measured in inches.

Lap after lap they tore around the course. Behind Mike McMullen was busy holding off Senior driver Dean Andrews.

NNKC: Tag Masters main.

The TAG Masters main was highlighted by a duel between brothers Steve (17) and Mike Ryckebosch for the victory. in the end Steve won the day but barely.

Eventually Andrews too over third overall and set off for the brothers Ryckebosch but there wasn’t enough time to catch them.

At the checkered Steve and Mike finished one two while fourth overall but third in the Master’s class was Mike McMullen while Andrews, who was third overall won the Seniors title.

“All I saw was his shadow the whole time,” Steve Ryckebosch said after the race. “It was great, Mike started on pole, I got a little jump but he did not let off in Turn 1, 2 or 3 and we’re bumping and somehow I made it out of that. Then I saw the shadow for 10-laps, he bumped me a few times and I just tried to run my lines and got him in the end.”

Then thanked his wife Lynn and Rodney at Nevada Kart Sport.

When the Stock Moto 125 started Jeremy Kay jumped into the lead. Jeff Wamre tried to make a race of it but a broken shift lever put him out early.

Up front it was Kay’s race as Dan Andrews was unable to close the gap and had to settle for second a little over five seconds behind the leader.

NNKC: Stock Moto 125.

Jeremy Kay heads for his fifth win of the season in Stock Moto 125.

“I’ve got five wins this year, it’s been awesome,” Kay said later. “We got the kart set up right, had a really good day and the weather’s been hot but nice.”

Then he thanked his father, grandparents, brother Cody, sister Lexus, Holm Racing, Rodney Rivers, the club for putting on a good event and the Man Above.

When the Jr-2 LO206 main began Jake Guzelis and Aiden Hawkins led the charge into Turn 1. Coming out of Turn 2 Aiden was in the lead.

Behind him Guzelis and Chase Dulude were disputing second place but Dulude had to settle for third. Ahead of him Guzelis started to close the gap with Hawkins.

Then Hawkins extended and would win the race followed by Guzelis, Dulude and Bryce Berry.

After the race Hawkins said, “I was struggling a little bit, I wasn’t being very smooth. Sometimes I get over excited but you have to calm down and get focused.”

Then he thanked his father, Cole Nelson, all the people that support him and all his friends that he races with.

Brooks Anderline, Jack Schrady and Austin Hawkins led the charge when the Jr. 1 LO206 main began. While they started close soon all three spread out.

NNKC: Jr-1 LO206

In the Jr-1 LO206 main Brooks Anderline (76) leads Jack Schrady and Austin Hawkins during the first lap.

Behind them Landon Kwapich and Wyatt Sander had a many lap duel for fourth. Unfortunately Heavyn Hill didn’t have a good day and exited the race early.

A race long duel for fourth ended when Landon Kwapich (3) reached the finish ahead of Wyatt Sander.

At the checkered Anderline won the day followed by Schrady and Hawkins.

Asked about the race Anderline said, “Well it was hard at the beginning cause my dad’s giving me signs telling me he’s (Schrady) really close. So I’m taking the conservative line making sure he doesn’t get inside and I pulled it off.”

Then he thanked Cole Nelson Racing and his parents.

This season there have been three young drivers racing in the Kid Kart Class. These beginners have been working on their driving and earning their racing spurs.

Tarron Graves was the early winner but soon was being challenged by Mia Wright. And joining them is Alyssa Winters, who while not up to their speed has been improving every time she races.

On this day however Wright was not to be denied after leading other races. When the main started she just took off and left everyone in her dust.

To be fair Graves was racing under a handicap as his motor was a bit down on power and after the racing was over it was discovered that part of the steering gear had broken.

NNKC: Kid Kart 2nd place.

Tarron Graves ended up second in the Kid Kart main.

Still he soldiered on for a solid second while Wright headed for her first main event win. She probably would have won it even if Graves had a healthy kart.

Behind them Winters was third and only had one problem on the final lap of the race.

After the race a very excited 7-year-old Wright was greeted by her family, grandmother and friends.

NNKC: Kid Kart winner.

With her father and others cheering her on, Mia Wright is about to win her first Kid Kart main.

Asked about the race she said, “I can’t believe it, I’m really excited. And I was hitting all my marks.

After that she thanked her daddy, who has gotten her to the track for some practice sessions.

Then a little later 6-year-old Graves said, “It’s my motor, it isn’t running right and I need a new piston.”

Then he thanked his father, ‘because he’s going to get my kart fixed.”

The day it self got off to a rough start when one young driver slid off track, hit a hay bale that flipped his kart. He was injured and got an ambulance ride to the the hospital for treatment.
