DIAMOND MOUNTAIN SPEEDWAY LABOR DAY RACES

SUSANVILLE, CALIF. (Sept. 1) — Diamond Mountain Speedway ended its regular season with a two-race program on Labor Day Weekend. After a full set of heats and mains on Saturday at the Sunday show, only the Mini Stocks had a heat race but the other four classes had a 6-lap dash for cash plus their mains.

All four of the dash winners lined up to receive their rewards.

The Dash winners were, Jared Flower in Street Stocks, Jace Wright in IMCA Northern Sportmod, Robert Mull in IMCA Stock Cars and Jace Wright who won the IMCA Modified dash.

Eventual Miini Stock winner Stephen Crook takes off during a restart.

When the Mini Stock feature began Stephen Crook was on point with Anthony Hovland giving chase. It only took a few laps before the two leaders lapped the two slowest cars.

Eventually things changed when Hovland went over the Turn 1 banking. He then went into the pits and returned to the race.

Now the race belonged to Crook, who took off and scored his first victory in the truck he races. Angelo Rallo was the runner up and Hovland ended up third.

After winning his first main in this truck Stephen Crook stands with his father.

“This truck has been rally great, I had some gearing issues last year but finally got them worked out and it seems like it’s working pretty good now,” Crook said. “It’s been a great little truck for me and this is my first main event win in it.

“I’ve got a lot of heat race wins in it but tonight felt pretty good to finally get a win out of this little truck. Kind of getting it figured out as it did race on asphalt before this. Kind of a puzzle getting it setup for dirt.”

Then the thanked his father, Stephen Crook Sr., as well as his mom.

Next on the track were the Street Stocks. A dozen of them raced into Turn 1 when the green waved.

On point was Joe Conroy with Clarence Holbrook close behind him. Soon he lead duo was pulling away while Gayson Olschowka took over third.

There was a caution when one car slowed going into Turn 3 and two others were unable to avoid it. Then the track officials had to remove some debris.

There would be another caution and another one after that. By now Conroy’s car was smoking so he headed for the pits.

Street Stock winner Jared Flower battles for the lead with Clarence Holbrook.

Two more cautions slowed the pace but in the end Jared Flower took over the lead and was able to hold off Holbrook for the victory. Ryan Parkhurst ended up third ahead of Olschowka.

After winning the Street Stock feature Jared Flower (Blue Pants) lined up with his family and friends.

After the race Flower said, “First of all I want to thank the Brown Family, had a rough first night and without them telling me not to give up and offering me their shop and home, food, whatever I needed I wouldn’t be tonight and I got my first victory.

“After a rough start last night we got going pretty good from 8th so not too bad. I want to thank my sponsors Bless Performance out in Wyoming, my work TD’s Repairs out in Chico and Always Tone in Chico.”

Then it was time for the IMCA Northern Sportmods race. Getting their feature started was a challenge as it took two attempts before they completed a lap without an incident.

At first Brysyn Simeral was on point then Jason Ferguson took over the next and after the third start held it.

There were two cautions; one for debris while the other was for a car than went over the Turn 3 banking. The track is set up so cars going over the banking at each end have enough room to recover, drive around to pit out and rejoin the race.

Jason Ferguson takes the checkered flag as he wins the IMCA Northern Sportmod feature.

In the final laps Ferguson held on to score the victory while Jace Wright was chasing him. Simeral ended up third ahead of Jason Emmot.

Jason Ferguson won the IMCA Northern Sportmod feature.

“The race was good, definitely a fun time, well deserved and it was a fun, fun track to run on,” Ferguson said. “The track was amazing, it was great, it had some character but it was fun to run on.”

Then he thanked his beautiful wife Angela, his crew and Precision Pro Shops, Reese Custom Concrete, D&L Pump Services, and his father that does all the engine work.

On this night it seemed the outside line worked the best. Anyone challenging the leader from the inside always seemed to come up short going through the corners.

There were seven IMCA Stock Cars that took the green when they started their feature. This time it took three attempts to get a lap completed but on every try Craig Nieman had the lead and upper hand.

Craig Nieman left everyone in his dust when he won the IMCA Stock Car feature.

He was chased by Wade Kennemore, who spun out of second and causing a caution. Up front Nieman was on cruise as he left everyone in his dust.

At the end Nieman had a full straight lead over runner up Kennemore while Don Deiter was third ahead of fourth place Jesse Yankee.

Craig Nieman won the IMCA Stock Car feature.

After the race Nieman said, “The car was on rails, I’ve been tuning on it and tuning on it. I finally got it figured out and that thing was a rocket tonight.

“The track was awesome tonight. It was great last night, we went side-by-side the top to bottom was good.”

Then he thanked Big Rob at Gunslinger Chassis and Paris Archie at Reno Rock.

Finally the night ended with the fastest of all, the IMCA Modified Class. When the green waved Jeff Chew was on point with Nevin Kennemore chasing him.

Soon Kennemore took over the lead but making his way through the pack was Chris Nieman. A caution came when Jason Emmot’s car slowed and he made his way to the pits.

By now the top three were Kennemore, Chew and the charging Nieman. Two more cautions would keep everyone bunched up and slow the pace.

During the IMCA Modified main, Chris Nieman (3) makes his move to take the lead as he passes Nevin Kennemore.

Soon after the last caution Nieman made his move and after a bit of side-by-side racing took over the lead. From that point he left everyone in his dust.

Chris Nieman takes the checkered flag as he wins the final race of the 2024 season.

As Nieman was exiting Turn 4 and heading for the checkered flag a car spun in Turn 3. So he got the checkered flag with a yellow. In the end Nieman won with Kennemore second ahead of third place Chew and fourth place Chris Lewis.

At the trophy presentation Nieman allowed he was glad the race ended when it did.

IMCA Modified winner Christ Nieman at the awards ceremony.

“We were overheating a little bit and I was just kind of easing on the gas and just kind of coasting around,” he said. “The car was pretty good, we fought problems all weekend, we still have a little bit of problems with the ignition but we’ll get her fixed.”

Then he thanked Lonnie, JT’s Butcher Supply, Foothill Meat Company, his daughter Chelse, girlfriend, parents and everyone the helps out.

Now the season has ended and the track will go dark until next spring. Then it will echo again with the sounds of horsepower and racing will resume.
