STEAD, NV (May 19) — Several weeks ago the Northern Nevada Kart Club had to postpone the second event in its 2024 season. That event was made up today when the weather cooperated.
Things did get started a bit late but soon the program was rolling. After the second heat race it was time for the main events.
First up were the Kid’s Karts. The youngest drivers race these low power karts.
On the green Maddi Towne was on point with Presley Prater right behind her. Eventually Prater made the winning pass and was on his way to reaching the checkered flat first. About three seconds later Towne reached the finish and Brooks Morrisey ended up third.
This past year NNKC created a new class, Junior 1 Rookie. That’s where racers moving up from the Kid Karts have a chance to race with more power before moving into the full Junior 1 class.
After the green Drake Kephart was on point with Jesse Shriver close behind him. A mistake allowed Shriver to take the lead. At the finish Shriver won with Kephart ending up second while Bryce Holdon finished third.
Next the Junior 1 class took to the track. On the green Kayden Williams led the charge into Turn 1.
While Williams led from start to finish there were two close battles for position behind. In the nose-to-tail duel for second Kipton Bocchi led at first but eventually Cash Prater took the position.
Behind them Owen Hanson led Jameson Morrisey as they also dueled nose-to-tail for the fourth position. Eventually Morrisey took fourth.
Up front it was all Williams as he sailed to another victory.
After the victory he said, “It was good, very windy, you could really feel it in the kart. The new tire compound was very grippy but definitely squealy, like going around Turn 7.”
Then he thanked his mom, his dad and all his sponsors.
Now it was time for the fastest karts the shifters. Some use the ROK motor while others use the Honda motor. This class uses a standing start and when the green lights came on Zeke Corson led the charge with Mitch Kennedy right behind him.
Early on Turbo Sombatsiri headed for the pits while Corson extended his lead. Behind the leaders Brooks Anderline and Jeff Wamre were dueling for third.
Later in the race Javier Avila went off course and stopped. Up front Corson won the race with Kennedy second and Anderline was able to finish third, highest placed Honda, after now fourth placed Wamre had a brief off-course excursion.
After the post race weigh-in Corson said, “Had a good start, put down a couple of early fast laps, got a little bit of a gap and then kind of got lazy for a minute and hit neutral coming out of 2. Luckily I had enough of a pad at the time so those guys didn’t just buzz me. I kind of got it back together after doing that as I almost came to a stop.”
Then he thanked his daughters Sky and Morgan. Then he added Mitch, Cody and the others.
Now it was time for the KA100/TAG main. On ghe green Ben Fisher led veteran Cody McKinney. Unfortunately the only TAG driven by Albert Diaz fell out due to problems.
Up front the duel for the lead continued until McKinney took the lead and raced off to take the victory. Fisher ended up second ahead of Nat Sombatsiri.
“I finally made it back out,” Said McKinney, who is returning to racing after a long absence. “ I just got on it a little better than he did. In Turn 1 if you swing out too wide somebody can jump right underneath you, that’s what I did. We were pretty much the same speeds and that’s all I needed. When you got on the edge it’s kind of hard to keep it perfect every lap.”
Then he thanked with a laugh himself, his wife and son.
Probably the race of the day was in the Heavy Class. When their main began Kelsey Nelson took off with Nathan Heath, Josh Prater and Jake Burchette close behind.
The race soon turned into the Nelson/Heath show as they dueled nose-to-tail and swapped the lead a few times during the 12-lap main.
Nelson took the lead just before the white flag and she reached the finish just over a tenth of a second ahead of Heath as they were almost side-by-side at the finish line. Behind them Josh Prater was third while Jake Burchette ended up fourth.
After the race Nelson said, “He’s pretty fast, him and I are pretty even out there so it makes for a really good battle. I passed him in 7, we were pretty even in 1 & 2, as well as 3,4 & 5 but I was faster in 6 & 7.
“The wind can do some stuff. Yesterday like 2/10ths it pulled off my lap times. I could feel it and it really slowed me down going up into 5.”
Then she thanked her husband Cole as she explained he keeps her kart together. She also thanked everybody else that helps her.
Now it was time for Junior 2, the last class before the young racers move up into the adult classes.
On the green Landen Warren led the charge into Turn 1. Soon it was a nose-to-tail duel between the leading trio that included Isaiah Manubi and Bryce Benton. Eventually Manubi took the lead.
Nine laps into the 12-lap main one racer crashed hart enough into the straight-away barrier to red flag the race. The medics rushed to his aid while everyone else stopped on the track.
Fortunately that racer’s injury wasn’t bad bit it took so much time the race was called at nine laps. The time gap between the top three was just over three tenths of a second.
After getting back to the weigh-in Manubi said, “I started third then got to second then I had an opening so I went to the lead and just held it. He (Warren) was real close and I tried to block a little bit.”
He thanked his family, his grandmother, friend Brooks, Cole Nelson Racing and Jeff Nelson for buiding his engine.
When the Pro 4-Cycle main began Rachel Williams took off and left everyone in her wake. Behind here there was close duel for second between Zach Sievert and Jimmy Johns.
In the end Williams scored a clear victory while Sievert finishes second about nine tenths of a second ahead of third place Johns. Behind them Brud Beaudoin took fourth just a bit over eight tenths of a second ahead of fifth place Jeremy Clark.
After getting hugs from her son and husband Williams, who was the second woman to win a main, said, “Oh my gosh, haven’t been in the kart since last season and boy I’m exhausted. My body is so tired, really good, great race. Great group of guys to be running with, Jimmy Johns is really fast, he gave me a run for my money.
Then he thanked her family as they each have their part.
The Senior main was the final race of the day. When the green flag waved the top four were nose-to-tail and stayed that way for several laps.
Late in the race there was a scramble exiting Turn 2 and at the end Andrew Hitchock led Brooks Anderline, who had been fourth. A few laps later Anderline took over the lead and pulled a small gap.
At the finish it was Anderline with Hitchock second. Ending up third was Giovanni Medina and Penny King ended up fourth.
After winning Anderline said, “Honestly I was not the fastest all weekend as we wer about a half a second off. We found a little bit today, was just kind of riding for a little bit.”
After the incident he explained, “I just kind of rode for a little bit, kind of made sure we had a good gap I could tell he was holding me up a little. Once I got the lead just kind of pulled away.”
Then he thanked his parents, Cole Nelson Racing, Invader Racing Engines and everyone that supports him.
Next race for NNKC is Sunday, June 2 and they’ll use Track 7. The results are posted at the end of this article.
