STEAD, NV (Oct 8) — A wonderful, warm fall day greeted the racers in the Northern Nevada Kart Club. Round 7 was the season ending event where championships were decided or confirmed was well as some earning their first victories.
After qualifying and a pair of heat races everyone was ready to start the main events. As usual the Kid Kart Class got things started.
This time they used a rolling rather than a standing start. The young drivers had a good formation heading down the front straight to the green flag.
At first Noah Beauregard and Presley Prater were close. As the 7-Lap race progressed Beauregard left everyone and arrived at the checkered flag first followed by Prater and Brooks Morrisey.
Next came the fastest karts the shifters that use a motorcycle transmission and have brakes on all four wheels. They use a standing start and when the light turned green off they went
Up front Zeke Corson, who runs a 125 ROK motor just motored away from everyone. He would win the race followed by runner up Gage Griego with Todd Thompson taking third.
Behind the lead trio came fourth placed Gerry Williams, who led those using the 125 Honda motor. Right behind him was fellow Honda powered Javier Avila, who ended up fifth.
After the race Corson said, “I wanted to keep it smooth, didn’t want to make any big mistakes. I made a big mistake in Heat 1 as I rotated myself completely which put me further back in the grid for Heat 2 so I worked back up to pole and just wanted to keep it safe there.”
Then he thanked Cody, his daughters Skyler and Morgan, Mitch, Rodney. He’s also said he’s the 2023 Shifter champion.
This year NNKC decided, for safety reasons, to divide the Junior Class as it’s the one those graduating from the Kid Kart class go into. The answer is a Junior 1 Rookie group for the less experienced drivers.
After one lap in the main everything came to a halt when one driver lost control coming out of the final corner and shot right into the barrier, which is plastic and designed to give. They had to take his steering wheel off and the on-site medic took her time to check him out.
Finally to the cheers of the crowd he stood up and walked, with a slight limp back to the pits while his kart was taken to the pits.
Once everyone was lined up in proper order the green waved again and off they went. Up front Cole Harris just took off and showed why he’ll probably be promoted to Junior 1 next season followed by runner up Cayden Duncan and Hunter Nelson.
“The race was good and after the restart it was no problem. And the track was good,” he said.
Then he thanked his parents.
Due to the sun setting earlier the mains, except for one were shortened from 12 to 8 laps.
Next it was time for the Junior 1 main. On the green Kayden Williams took off and left everyone in his wake on his way to scoring another victory. Owen Hanson was the runner up followed by third place Harrison Oziminski.
After the post-race weigh in Williams said, “We’re thinking about going into Junior 2 but we’re out doing other races so we’re thinking about should we do it. The track is pretty slick but that’s always due to tire pressures and stuff.”
Then he thanked his competitors, dad, mechanics and mom.
The next main combines three classes; KA-100-Masters, KA-100 and KT-100. On the green KA-100 racer Carter Knight took off while further back William Owen and Stevie Ray Rosario started a race long duel for second.
Knight left everyone on his way to the victory while fellow KA-100 drivers Owen and Rosario ended up second and third. Nat Sombatsiri finished fifth and won the Master’s group while Brian Lewis, who ended up ninth, was the KT-100 winner.
After the race Knight said, “It was great, really nice first one, super excited about it. First win and worked super hard for it. Just trying to be consistent, that’s what I’ve been practicing for, so if I can do that feel pretty confident about it.”
Then he thanked his team, Nevada Kart Sport and his parents for supporting him.
When the Heavy main began Kelsey Nelson was on point with Nathan Heath right behind her while behind them came Eric Kuzemchak.
Eventually Heath got the lead but Nelson was glued to his back bumper while Kuzemchak was right behind her. This high-speed trio roared around the track making it their own private duel and spent the final laps nose-to-tail.
Heath reached the checkered flag just 1.736 of a second ahead of Nelson, who was only two tenths of a second ahead of third place Kuzemchak.
“After I took the lead, never looked back. Actually I looked back once,” Heath said. “The track wasn’t that great, it’s hot, windy, dusty and oily. It’s a challenge on these hot days like this as it’s crazy.”
Then he thanked his father, Cole Nelson Racing, Invader Racing Engines and NNKC.
Next on the card was the Junior 2 Class. These youngsters are getting more experience before moving up to the next classes.
Right after the green waved Bryce Benton was on point with Isaiah Manubi close behind him. Then it became a 4-way duel when Lucca Sweetland and Jeremy Heath joined the party.
Eventually they separated into pairs with Benton and Manubi in the lead one. At the checkered flag Benton was a bit over eighth tenths of a second ahead of Manubi while further back Sweetland and Heath were third and fourth.
“Yea, I knew he (Manubi) was there, was trying to defend all I could. It’s my first win and I did it,” Benton said.
Then he thanked Cole Nelson, my dad, my family and everyone that supports me.
When the Pro 4 Cycle main began Alec Beaudion took off with Rachel Williams jumping from her second row start to be on his back bumper and Jimmy Johns was right behind her.
Soon Beaudion and Williams separated from the pack and began a race long duel. At one time Williams tried to get by in Turn 1 but Beaudion was able to hang on to the lead.
At the checkered Beaudion reached the finish just over three tenths of a second ahead of Williams, about the biggest lead he had during the race.
After the post-race weigh in, and before going to the Table of Doom for tech, Beaudion said, “When she (Williams) tried to pass me I knew how close she was. Just managed to cut back on her and we almost made contact. It’s been fun all day, it’s been a great season, this class is so much fun and everybody in it is great.
“Looking forward to next year, hopefully we’ll get more people to join us. Just want to thank everybody in NNKC and in the class. And it’s my father’s birthday today.”
The Senior Class had the honor of ending the 2023 season and their main was 10-laps long. The reason was because of the points since Brooks Anderline and Andrew Hitchcock were just 10 points apart so this was for the championship.
On the green Anderline was on point with Giovanni Medina right behind him and Andrew Hitchcock right behind them. The race was a three-kart battle from green to checkered
Eventually Medina took the point with Anderline on his back bumper. Running a close third was Hitchcock, but neither of the three drivers could relax or make a big mistake.
Late in the race Hitchcock made his move in Turn 1. There may or may not have been contact but he took over second place dropping Anderline to third.
At the checkered flag Medina won by just over 1 second. Behind him Hitchcock was just a half second ahead of Anderline.
After taking the season’s final checkered flag Medina said, “They were really, really close. I got the lead on the fourth lap and I continued from there. I got to second in the championship but next year is going to be different.”
Then he thanked his parents, family and friends for their support.
When this report was posted the club had not updated the points so that is yet to be resolved.
Now Desert Park Raceway will only echo with the sounds of kart racers practicing until next spring when the green flag waves again.
