SUSANVILLE, CALIF. (September 3) — Diamond Mountain Speedway ended its regular season with a Saturday-Sunday race schedule and threw in a Friday evening test and tune session.
The weekend’s weather was a challenge to put it mildly. However the track managed to get all the races in.
REPORTER’S NOTE: I did not realize the format had changed so after hot laps only mains were run Sunday. As a result I only was inside the track for three of the races. Apologize for the brief coverage.
When the Mini Stock main finished Malachi Moya won the event. He was pretty pleased with the victory and thanked those that had supported him.
Unfortunately the results weren’t posted when this report was filed so there the Street Stocks aren’t part of this report.
The IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature was action packed including a race stopping event when one car rolled as it went over the Turn 1-2 banking. Fortunately the driver was okay.
There were more cautions during the event but in the end Jace Wright won the day.
After the race he said, “I had a lot of fun and was surprised we got it in. Jeff runs a good race and set the track up. We got in about 30 laps.
Then he thanked RW Construction, West Side Fence and the Sign Station.
As the green flag waved to start the Sprint Car main Grason Tenora grabbed the lead and was never headed. Nick Purdy was second but soon fell to third behind Kyle Pendergrass.
There were a couple of cautions when drivers spun out but he race was fast and clean. At the end former Outlaw Kart racer Grasen Tenora was the winner.
After the end of racing he said, “It wasn’t too bad, a little rough at the beginning but overall the track was pretty good.”
Then he thanked his family and friends for their support.
Next came the IMCA Modifieds and they were slated to run a 40-lap main. On the green Andrew Peckham jumped into the lead but soon there as a tangle in Turn 2, with a third sliding in to miss them, and a car stalled at the exit of Turn 4.
On the green Peckham took off but now he had Chris Nieman chasing him. Eventually they caught a pack of lap traffic with the lead duo running nose-to-tail.
As they encountered the group of slower cars Nieman moved to the outside and made what was the winning pass. At the finish Nieman won followed by Peckham, James Turner and Chris Lewis.
After the race Nieman commented that the outside like was the best and that’s what he decided to use. Then he thanked his sponsors. He also expressed appreciation his girl friend and their young daughter gave him.
Originally the IMCA Stock Feature was slated for 50-laps. However due to the late hour and the fact the scoring crew was having to do it by hand it was cut to 30-laps.
On the green Nick Boucher took off and lead the 10-car field into Turn 1. Soon one car dropped out then two collected each other and caused a caution.
On the restart Boucher took off but now Wade Kennemore was chasing the leader. Behind them Jeff Olschowka was working his way to the front.
Soon, using the outside line Jeffrey Hudson moved to the outside and soon took over the lead. After contact with Olschowka the car of Boucher was spun.
Olschowka, the promoter, told an official to give Boucher his spot back while he moved to the rear. On the green Hudson took off and soon was being chased by Wade Kennemore.
Late in the race there was a red flag as a car leaving the track had a small fire. The track crew made short work of that and racing resumed.
In the final lap the lead duo was nose-to-tail as they headed toward the flag. Hudson won followed by Kennemore and Boucher.
After the race Hudson said, “ That was an awesome race. I’m sure that was one of the better races of the year between me, Wade and Boucher. We were putting on a show.
“The three of us had to be sweating after that one as we were fighting pretty good. The track was pretty fun and racy with a cushion and slick on the bottom.
Then he thanked his car owner, 1st Class Auto Glass, his pit crew and family.
Now the season is over and class championships have been decided. There might be one more race but that is yet to be decided. If it does happen the event will probably be at Rattlesnake Raceway in Fallon. Stay tuned.
OTHER RACING NEWS:
• On Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m., the Sparks A&W will have another cruise in. They are located across from Reed High School and there will be a DJ providing music, prizes and cars to admire.
• Thursday morning, starting at 7 a.m. the Iron Mafia will have a meet at Kim’s Donuts & Tea House. Location is 1328 U.S.395 North in Gardnerville.
• American Valley Speedway canceled its September 9th race. The season ending event will be on September 16th.
• Daveys American Racing is usually on Face Book at 6 p.m. Wednesday evenings. One can see the show on Face Book and get into the chat was well.
Davey covers national series as well as racing in the western United States. His focus is on oval tracks.
