RENO, NV (Aug. 30) — Things are taking a bit of a breather for car meets as the annual Rib Cook Off is underway this weekend. However there are still car meets, an oval track racing in our region.
On TV, the major series are beginning or about to begin the countdown to crowning series champions.
CAR MEETS:
• Once again the Iron Mafia should get Thursday started as they meet at Kim’s Donut & Tea House in Gardnerville. The meet starts at 7 a.m. and is located at 1328 U.S. 395 North.
• On Friday, starting at 5 p.m., it’s So Long Hot August Nights Cruise. Great way to end the workweek and there are prizes, raffle and photo ops with classic cars. Location is 330 E. Main Street, Suite A in Fernley.
• Sunday starting at 10 a.m. Reno Cars & Coffee has its first of the month meet. Location is at the Keitzke Starbucks and there is usually a pretty good turn out of many types of cars and trucks.
RACING (4-Wheel):
• Diamond Mountain Speedway in Susanville has a big weekend. Friday, from 6 until 10 p.m. is for practice.
– Saturday is a full program that helps set the fields for Sunday’s money rounds. Racing begins at 6 p.m. on the weekend.
– In addition to the cars the Modern Concrete Winged Sprint Cars will also be in action both days. This is a growing series as the aim is to have good sprint car fields.
RACING & PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):
•Due to the Mammoth Mountain Motocross event the MX track at Fernley 95A Speedway is closed until next Saturday.
• The annual Mammoth Mountain Motocross event goes through Saturday when the big bike classes race. Best wishes to our local racers that are down there.
• Unfortunately there was no update on Riverfront MX so am guessing there is practice from 5 until 10 p.m. Thursday. Then from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
• Prairie City should have practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
• MMX Racing has practice from 9 until 2 Saturday on the main, sand and kids track. Then from 9 until 3 p.m. Sunday with the vintage track added to the mix.
•Over at the Argyll MX track there is the 4th round of this year’s OTHG National series. Both Saturday and Sunday are race days.
• E Street MX Park hosts an AMA District 36 Grand Prix on Sunday. It will be a full day of two-wheel action.
RACING (NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL):
• Labor Day weekend is a huge time for several series as they start the count down to naming champions.
• Thursday at 3 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NASCAR Race Hub. This weekend the series travels to the Lady in Black.
• Friday starts on www.espn3.com when at 6:05 a.m. they show Formula 3 qualifying then at 7 a.m. have Formula 2 qualifying from Monza, Italy. And at 9:15 the network has the F-1 Show from Italy.
- At 3 p.m. Peacock has Indy Car practice from Portland.
• Saturday starts at 12:40 a.m. when ESPN3 had the Formula 3 sprint race followed at 5:15 a.m. when Formula 2 has its sprint race. Then at 6:55 a.m. ESPN 2 has Formula 1 qualifying from the historic Monza Park circuit.
- At 7 a.m. CBS Sports broadcasts The Grid. Then at 9:30 a.m. USA network has NASCAR Cup practice and qualifying from Darlington and at 1:30 p.m. the network airs the Xfinity race.
- At 12:30 p.m. Peacock broadcasts Indy Car qualifying from Portland. Then at 11:15 p.m. ESPN has the Formula 3 feature race.
• Sunday begins at 12:55 a.m. when ESPN 3 airs the Formula 2 feature followed at 2:55 a.m. with the Porsche Super Cup race also from Monza. At 5:55 a.m. ESPN has the Grand Prix of Italy from Monza.
- At 10:10 a.m. Peacock airs the Indy NXT race from Portland. Then, on a delayed basis, at 10:30 NBC has MotoGP from Cataluna, Spain.
- Peacock at 12:20 p.m. airs the Indy Car race from Portland. At 1 p.m. Fox has the NHRA Funny Car All-Star Call out from Indianapolis then at 2:30 p.m. Fox Sports 1 has NHRA qualifying.
- The USA network at 3 p.m. broadcast the NASCAR Cup race from Darlington. This is the first playoff race from the Track Too Tough to Tame.
• Labor Day Monday has more racing as the NHRA stars face off at the U.S. Nationals. The event sets drivers places for the Count Down to determine class championshps.
Whew. That if for this week as it signals the end of summer for many people.

OTHER RACING NEWS:
• This weekend starting today the annual VORRA race outside of Yerington is being run. This usually ends the desert racing series before the series goes back to short track events.
• Next weekend is the 7th round for the BBMX season. Race is at Winnemucca and one can save money by signing up online.
• Daveys American Racing is usually on Face Book at 6 p.m. Wednesday evenings. One can see the show on Face Book and get into the chat was well.
Davey covers national series as well as racing in the western United States. His focus is on oval tracks.
NOTE: Davey’s been under the weather lately so his Wednesday evening show are up in the air currently. Best bet is to check at 6 p.m. Wednesdays on Face Book to see if he back broadcasting.
