HOT AUGUST NIGHTS: A FESTIVAL OF CARS AND ROCK ‘N’ ROLL

RENO, NV (August 3) — One of the happiest events in the Reno Sparks area is the annual Hot August Nights. It’s a ten-day celebration that brings people to this area, not to mention a huge economic boost to the region.

Hot August Nights reported registrations were sold out at 5,500 cars were registered. The event brings around a half million people to the area and has a huge economic impact.

Locally Summit Racing Products got Friday rolling with a Show ‘N’ Shine on Friday.

Things got rolling on Friday when Summit Racing Products had a Show ‘N’ Shine at their location in Sparks.

That same day there was a  Friday-Saturday Show N’ Shine up at Virginia City. Cars are judged, awards are given and a cruise each afternoon.

Sunday the festival moved to the Bonanza Casino on North Virginia Street. It’s the “Cruise for the Cure,” to benefit the prostrate cancer association.

Pepper Mill Casino and Hotel had their north parking lot set for cruising through, display, entertainment as well as live preformers.

The official kick off in Reno/Sparks is at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino. The north parking lot is set up so a car can either cruise around then leave or be parked for display.

There is also a stage for live entertainment in the evening and during the day a D.J. plays Rock N’ Roll. There are various vendors as well.

In side Big Boys Toy Store that has about everything a car person could want as well as items for the ladies.

A block or so to the east there is the Big Boys Toy Store selling everything from engine parts to polishing items. There is also neon signs to be sold, t-shirts and items for the ladies.

Over at the Livestock Events Center there is a good-sized swap meet that runs for most of the festival.

The Grand Sierra Resort and Casino has the largest Show ‘N’ Shine as well as the biggest stage for outdoor concerts.

The area also has the biggest stage for entertainment that happens every evening.

The Atlantis Casino and Hotel also has a parking lot one can cruise through or park their car for display.

Another venue is the Atlantis Casino and Hotel. The west parking lot is set up for displays and just cruising through. There is also a large backdrop for those that want a picture taken of their car.

If a person can’t afford a full sized car or wants a model of the one they have several vendors can fill that need.This onewas at the Atlantis.

They too have a stage set up for live entertainment that happens every night. There are contests, like donut eating as well as vendors selling everything from small sale models of cars, shirts and food.

Victorian Avenue, by the Nugget is another place where people will put their cars on display begore cruising with them.

Over in Sparks Cars line Victorian Avenue during the day although some will first park their cars then later head out for different locations.

Either downtown Reno or in Sparks on Victorian Avenue, shown here, is a great place to watch the cars cruise by.

Wednesday evening is when the cruises start. There is one in downtown Reno while the other one is in Sparks. Both are well attended and they are a great way to see these cars and trucks as intended; on the road.

On the west side of the Nugget in Sparks there is a short drag strip. Good place to see burn outs and racing.

The Nugget in Sparks has one unique feature. It has a very short drag race track. Good place to see cars do burn outs and launch as soon after that drivers have to brake for a sharp left turn. Still there is a lot of action.

MAG Auctions is at the Convention Center by the Atlantis. They had a huge amount of cars to see this week.

Over at the Convention Center MAC Auctions takes bids on many cars that are up for auction. Then range from classics to a brand new Corvette.

Here are just some of the neon signs that were being auctioned off.

Other items are also up for sale including movie posters, large neon light displays.

It all ends Sunday, starting around 10 a.m. when the annual Hot August Nights Parade. Goes through downtown Reno and awards plus other prizes are handed out.

This year’s parade, starting around 10 a.m. Sunday should be long and a great way to see the cars one might have missed.

This Sunday the NNKC is having a make up race at Desert Park Raceway out at Stead.

• The Northern Nevada Kart Club is making up one race lost to the weather early in the season. On line registration closes at 6 p.m. Friday but from 11 to 3 p.m. Saturday there will be registrations at the track.

Next event is a $5 Saturday on August 12. That’s followed by the popular season ending Mopars vs the World weekend on September 16 & 17. Sunday the 17th is when the King of the Track award is handed out.

Daveys American Racing is usually on Face Book at 6 p.m. Wednesday evenings. One can see the show on Face Book and get into the chat was well.

Davey’s American Racing will be liver on Face Book starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Davey covers national series as well as racing in the western United States. His focus is on oval tracks.
