RENO, NV (July 27) — The car event buffet table is starting to overflow as we head into Hot August Nights. There is also some racing as well.
CAR MEETS:
• On Friday from 4 until 8 p.m. Summit Racing has a cruise-in and it’s a great way to end the work-week. Location is on East Glendale in Sparks just past the railroad tracks.
• Hot August Nights gets going this weekend. The festival celebrating cars starts up in Virginia City at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
• This Sunday the Cars & Coffee groups aren’t having meets as it’s the fifth Sunday of the month. However the Bonanza Casino on North Virginia Street has the “Cruisin for the Cure” car show.
All makes and years are welcome. At the meet there is food, live entertainment and the proceeds benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
• On Monday the Peppermill has a Hot August Nights 2023 kick off party. It’s both a cruise and show ‘n’ shine event in the north parking lot and there will be entertainment.
- Other places are also getting ready for the festival and the best way to keep track of what is happening is to check the website at; www.hotaugustnights.net then check the event schedule. It’s going to be one busy week for car fans.
– On Tuesday, August 1st, Fibercraft is hosting the Summer Slam Show & Shine. It’s an evening show that starts at 5:30 p.m. and the location is 591 Sunshine Lane in Reno.
– Next Thursday, August 3rd, the National Auto Museum is celebrating the 50th anniversary of American Graffiti. Should be a good show and have some classic cars to see.
RACING (4-WHEEL):
• Friday and Saturday two oval tracks have two nights of racing
- Rattlesnake Raceway, located east of downtown Fallon, has Friday’s show beginning at 7 p.m. and the track will give a kids bike away. Saturday’s show begins at 6 p.m. and features, besides racing, a meet and greet was well as a water balloon duel between kids and drivers.
In addition the Modern Concrete Winged Sprint Cars will be racing both nights. Good chance to see these winged machines on the track.
For those racing at Rattlesnake Grace Motor Sports Photography has weekend packages available. Photos are a great way to thank sponsors and those that help a driver.
- To the east the Winnemucca Regional Raceway has racing both Friday and Saturday nights The track features Outlaw Karts that run before the big cars take to the track. Start times for the cars are 7 p.m. Friday then 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
- Over in East Quincy the American Valley Speedway is hosting its fair races. If one arrives early they can enjoy the nice county fair then go next door and see the races as the track has a 6 p.m. start time.
• For those that race with the Northern Nevada Kart Club, there is a track workday on Saturday. Starts at 8 a.m. and if one has a leaf blower, rakes as well as shovels those would be very helpful.
RACING & PRACTICE (MOTOCROSS):
• This weekend the motocross track at Fernley 95A Raceway will be closed. Believe it will be open next weekend and will check then.
• Over the hill there is a race and practice sessions at those tracks.
- Prairie City has practice from 9 until 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
- Riverfront has practice Thursday from 5 until 10 p.m. then round 1 of this year’s Saturday Night Series is at the track. Gates open at noon, practice begins at 4 p.m. with racing to follow.
- E Street MX Park is hosting an AMA District 36 Grand Prix. Saturday is for sign in and there might be practice but it’s not shown on the poster. Sunday of course is a full day of racing for all the classes.
- MMX Racing from 9 until 2 p.m. Saturday has practice on the main, sand and kids tracks. Then Sunday, again from 9 until 2 p.m. is more practice but this time the vintage track is added to the mix.
• The Pro Motocross series is off this weekend.
RACING (NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL):
• Thursday begins at 3 p.m. when Fox Sports 1 airs NASCAR Race Hub.
- Then at 6 p.m. ESPN broadcasts the latest round of the SRX series. This series uses spec cars and races on short tracks well known drivers.
• This weekend the Formula 1 circus races at the fearsome Spa course in Belgium. Coverage jumps between www.espn3.com and ESPN2. It all starts Saturday at 12:55 a.m. as the Formula 3, Formula 2 and Formula 1 practice sessions are covered.
- At 7:55 a.m. ESPN broadcasts the Formula 1 qualifying.
- The USA Network at 2 p.m. airs Xfinity qualifying from Road America.
• Saturday begins early, at 1 a.m. with overage of the Formula 3 and Formula 2 sprint races. Then ESPN at 2:55 a.m. has the Formula 1 Sprint Shootout followed at 7:25 by the Formula 1 Sprint race.
- Over on CBS Sports at 8:30 a.m. the network has Round 15 of the Formula E series that is in London this weekend.
- At 9:30 a.m. the USA Network shows NASCAR Cup qualifying from Richmond International Raceway. Then at noon NBC broadcasts the Xfinity race from Road America.
- Fox Sports 1 at 4:30 p.m. airs the Craftsman Truck Series race from Richmond. Then at 11:30 p.m. ESPN 3 has the Formula 3 race from Spa.
• Sunday gets going at 1 a.m. when ESPN 3 airs the Formula 3 race from Spa followed at 2:45 a.m. by the Porsche Supercup event.
- At 5:55 a.m. ESPN Broadcasts the Grand Prix of Belgium at the fearsomely fast circuit at Spa Francorchamps. Then at 8:30 a.m. CBS Sports has round 16 of the Formula E series that is visiting London this weekend.
- The weekend ends at noon when the USA Network airs the NASCAR Cup race from Richmond International Raceway. It’s been described as a short track that races like super speedway.
That’s it for this weekend. Now our region heads into Hot August Nights. It’s a 10-day celebration of cars, music, show ‘n’ shines, cruises, drag racing at the Nugget and some great entertainment.

OTHER RACING NEWS:
• A heads up because at the end of August is the annual Outlaw Flat Trac motorcycle races at Fuji Park. Location is the fairgrounds at the south end or Carson City.
Friday is a charity event where police and fire fighters face off in a special race. The proceeds help a volunteer fire department.
- This year there is something extra for those that haven’t raced flat track or want to sharpen their skills. It’s a racer school or Moto Anatomy hosted by Johnny Lewis.

• Next week is when the annual Loretta Lynn Amateur Nationals are being held and two young racers from this area will be competing there.
- Lux Turner is now living in Southern California as it’s easier to practice down there. However he’ll be racing in two different pro classes. The Nationals for many is seen as step on the way to Supercross.
- His sister Lachlan, everyone calls her Lala, is a Gardnerville high school student. She’ll be racing in two different girls and women’s classes.
- The times given here are Central Daylight Time or two hours earlier here. Their races as well as others can be seen live on www.racertv.com.
- • Daveys American Racing is usually on at 6 p.m. Wednesday evenings. One can see the show on Face Book and get into the chat was well.
Davey covers national series as well as racing in the western United States. His focus is on oval tracks.
