STEAD, NV (June 25) — Rounds 5 of this year’s Mini Moto Series visited the Northern Nevada Kart Club’s home track, Desert Park Raceway.
While Saturday’s event was all Asphalt on Sunday there was a short dirt section, with a tabletop, whoops and other things added.
First event was the Pee Wee/Junior and when the lights turned green Madix Harkin, who was the only junior, too off and left everyone in his wake. One Pee We fell out even before the race started.
While Harkin scored the victory Malcom Whitmire scored the Pee Wee win when he was second overall at the checkered flag
The Youth/Women’s Supermoto race started with the top two being close. For the first laps Brendan Anatiychuk was on point but Dean Rabideau was close behind.
The were going so fast the lead duo lapped third place Madix Harkin and fourth place Elizabeth Kessler twice. In the end Rabideau took over the lead and stormed off to claim the victory.
Before the Adult Mini main began one of the bikes stalled and was out of the race. When the green lights came on twelve riders took off and headed into Turn 1.
Heading into the dirt section three bikes went down but the riders were able to get up and continue. Up front Cameron Poe was in the catbird’s seat as he was on point.
At the checkered flag Poe won the race followed by second place Merlin Valencia and Jeremy Callender, who ended up third. Originally Dean Rabideau was listed as second but apparently, on the scoring sheet, was disqualified.
When the 250 Amateur main began Sharon Mowell took off. Behind her Dean Rabideau and Rod Wetmore had a long duel to see who was going to be second.
At the end Mowell scored her first victory of the day followed by Rabideau an third place Wetmore.
The All Amateur race had three classes running. When the race started Eric Poland and Sharon Mowell were close but up front Cameron Bellamy was on point.
As the race progressed Mowell took over second with Jeremy Callendar chasing her. In the end Bellamy scored the victory followed by Mowell.
Finishing third was Callendar, who races in the 40+ Class and fourth was 50+ Class racer Rod Wetmore.
When the Open Amateur main began Sharon Mowell and Eric Poland, who was in the 450 Amateur Class. were running close together After a lap or two Mowell, who races in the Open Amateur Class, began to distance her self.
At the checkered flag Mowell scored her second victory of the day. Not bad with two victories and one second in the three classes she races in.
After the race she said, “I did three classes. It was a pretty good race, I wasn’t sure about the rain but it kind of cleared out. Just tried to learn from the 450 Class earlier as I get faster in this sport as I’m not really used to the asphalt stuff, so it’s been a good season and learning curve. I cross country in the trees so technical riding.”
Then she thanked everyone that supports her, Farmers Brewing, Fly Racing, Flow Vision Goggles. Her family, Bullet Designs an MOJO.
The Open Pro Supermoto ended the day and weekend. Racers had a 10-lap main and, as an extra incentive, the winner would get $500.
On the green Jake Thompson and Cameron Bellamy were as close to nose-to-tail as they could be. However it seemed that Thompson had a slight advantage in the dirt section.
He would use that an open up a two-second gat that held for most of the races. Finally it opened up just a bit but at the checkered flag Thompson had just over a two-second advantage over Bellamy.
The checkered flag ended the racing and weekend for those that stayed for the second day.
After catching his breath Jake Thompson said, “The secret was you know, just hit my marks. I really wanted to put a gap on Cameron because knew he would be very consistent like he is.
“Yesterday he gave me a gift by crashing halfway through the race but today he just kept me honest. It was a good race all in all an I’m stoked about it.”
Then he thanked Shano with Fast House, Oakley, Suspension by Buck, Pressler Properties and Construction, as well as his friends and family.
Round 6 will again be at Desert Park Raceway on the weekend of July 22-23. Might be a bit warmer although some sprinkles did help keep the temperature down to mild.
REPORTER’S NOTE: Results are unofficial and subject to change. With one exception I’m using what the score-keeper gave me. I do thank her for that as I know keeping score can be a thankless task.
While I took photographs for my article Dwayne Bellamy was there taking individual photos of the riders. If interested one can call him at 775-567-2354 or send him an e-mail at, dabellamy@icloud.com. Best way to make sure a photographer like him is at the events is to buy a print or two.
