STEAD, NV (June 11) — Although Desert Park Raceway was hit by a pretty good storm Saturday afternoon, Sunday was very different. A pretty good attendance as there were 91 racers despite the threat of weather.
Due to the weather the usual schedule was altered. After practice there was one longer than usual heat race then the mains were reduced to 14 laps.
The Kid Kart Class for the youngest racers gets the mains. On the green Presley Prater led with Pailsey Purdy close behind.
While passing a slower kart Prater got the best and by that driver quickly. Unfortunately Purdy was held up and dropped back to Sunday.
At the checkered it was Prater, Purdy and third place Gwen Wright.
There were enough 80c shifters to have their own race. When the green waved Sky Corson took off with Josh Prater giving chase.
Lap after lap Corson extended her lead and at the finish had a 23 second advantage over runner up Prater. Coming home third was Brandon Carlson and Jesse Goodrum ended up fourth.
After the race winner Sky Corson said, “ It was really great, really great to be back in the 80 again as it’s a great kart. I have to thank my dad, he’s my mechanic, my mentor, hes everything. He’s given me all this and I’m proud of him.”
The 125 shifters are divided as one group uses the Honda moto while the other uses the newer ROK motor. This group, like the 80 Shifters, uses a standing start.
When the green lights went on Zeke Corson took off followed by Mike Faker and Mitch Kennedy. Behind them Brooks Anderline led the Honda group with returning veteran Allis Wilt chasing him.

At the checkered flag Corson reached the finish 6.070 seconds ahead of Faker and Kennedy. In the Honda group Anderline won followed by Wilt.
After the 125 shifter race the ROK winner said, “Got a good start, kind of need to always. Then had very little mistakes as that always helps.
“You know a lot of people don’t like to be hunted they prefer hunting, I kind of feel the same in both positions. The track is good, for all the rain we just got it’s been washed away I think we managed to get an amount of rubber down.”
Then he thanked his daughters, Sky, Morgan and of course Rodney, Mitch, Adam and Cody for their support.
In Junior 2 it was a runaway for Kayden Williams. Behind him Kipton Bocchi was the runner up and Jameson Morrisey ended up third.
After the race Williams said, “It was pretty good, I kept making little mistakes but the track was hot so kind or slowed down.”
Then he thanked his sponsors, mechanics and his competitors.
There were three groups racing in the KA100/KT100/ TAG race. Up front Jack Schrady and William Owen led the overall and would pull away.
Eventually Schrady started to pull away leaving Owen to be solo in second. Further back Stevie Ray Rosario and Gio Medina were dueling for third.
At the checkered flag Schrady won the overall. Behind him returning veteran Allen Wilt won the KT100 class while Steve Ryckebosch was the KA100 Masters winner.
Asked how the race was Schrady said, “It was good, it was fun. I started the kart and wasn’t handing too good but once the tires came in I really put in some fast laps. It was tough to get around some of the lap traffic but once I had some good clean laps it was fun.”
Then he thanked his parents, Nevada Kart Sport for all the help with the kart.
The Heavy/Masters race began as a four-way duel for the lead then turned into a three-way as the leading trio extended.
Up front Brandon Arace claimed the victory with runner up Kelsey Nelson less than a half second behind him. Steve Dow was third with Josh Prater ending up fourth.
After the post race weigh in Arace said, “I could feel her (Kelsey Nelson), I knew she was there. She kept the pressure on the entire time so it was hard to stay focused.
“I felt like I kept over driving into three and every time I could feel her creaping up more and more. It worked out pretty good in the end.”
Then he thanked his father, chief mechanic that keeps his kart ready to go. He added his family as well as Nelsons for the kart and motor.
In Junior 2 it was all Cooper Perez as he left everyone in his wake. Behind him there was a three-way duel for third.
At the checkered Perez won and Bryce Benton was the runner up just four tenths of a second ahead of third place Lucca Sweetland. Finishing fourth was Jeremy Heath while further back was Cassie Gabel.
After the race Perez said, “I knew I would have to work a lot harder. It was a good battle. The key was to stay focused, being consistent as you get faster and faster every time.
Then he thanked his parents, his grandpa for building the engine and his uncle Cole Nelson.
Next came Pro4Cycle and leading the charge was Rachel Williams. Over the 14-lap race she slowly extended her lead.
At the checkered Williams finished about two and a half seconds ahead of Ed Atkins. Further back Jimmy Johns was third while Jacob Ciari ended fourth.
Once she got through the post race weigh in and delighted Williams said, “I felt him right behind me at the start. My goal was to look forward, run my race and try not to think about him.
“I kept thinking, ‘be smooth, hold your line, do your thing.’ The track is good, just glad the rain has held off so far and hope we can get one more race.”

The Senior Class ended the day’s racing and produced the closest finish of the day. On the green Zack Rivera took off but right on his back bumper were the duo of Andrew Hitchcock and Gio Medina.
Lap after lap they tore around they tore around the track. In fact Hitchcock took the lead and River slipped to third behind Medina. On the last lap Rivera made what was the winning pass and he reached the checkered flag nine one hundredth of a second ahead of Hitchock. Less than two tenths of a second further back was Medina in third.
After catching his breath Rivera said, “It was a hard one, it was not free and I told myself that. In the heat I got lucky by walking away right at the start they’re all over me and got past me.
“I had really good overall speed so I just couldn’t break away. I knew I had the advantage in the race and I just had to be smart. Being third place on the last lap is where you want to be I made the pass on Six as I love that spot.”
Then he thanked his father, who owns Nevada Kart Sport, BLR and Track Side Engines.
