FIRE AND ICE 100 STARTS SEASON FOR MRANN

NIGHTINGALE, NV (Feb. 19) — This weekend Trail Blazers MC started the 2023 season for MRANN. As traditional the Hare & Hound event was staged north of the Nightingale exit on I-80, which is east of Fernley.

This season there have been some changes in MRANN and one of them was a new Pro Class for the Big Bikes. They all carry the AA designation and ride with red plates although some still have to make that switch. And there is money awarded at the end of the race.

The new AA Pro Class leads the charge on Sunday.

As usual riders lined up in their classes, this time the AA Class was launched first then, with a 60-second gap they were followed by the Experts, Amateurs and finally the Novice riders.

Although he didn’t start up front Zane Roberts used an outside pass to take the lead coming out of a wash. From there he was on fire. At the end of the first lap he had more than a 4-minute advantage and ended up with 7 minutes ahead of runner up Austin Serpa.

First overall and first AA rider was Zane Roberts. At the end he had a 7-minute gap over second place.

After catching his breath Roberts said, “The course was a lot of fun there were a couple of fast sections for the transfer sections. For the most part there were a lot fun washes and single track. I actually like the course better on the second loop once all those washes got kind of churned up.

“It was a great race, a lot of fun to be back out here I don’t think I’ve actually done a MRANN race since about 2015.”

Asked about his start Roberts admitted they aren’t his strong suit. However he walked the bomb run so just held it wide open at the start and used an outside pass to get into the lead.

Then he thanked Beta USA, Perelli Tires, his team sponsors, his family for their support and the club for putting on an awesome race.

While the first two had the race pretty much to themselves the same could not be said for those riders finishing third through fifth place. Corey Fletcher ended up third while Wyatt Brittner was four and Madden Kirsch, the first expert to complete two laps, was fifth.

After almost 100 miles of racing the spread between all three was less than one second.

First expert to complete both laps was Madden Kirsch.

After his finish Kirsch said, “It was a good race, I felt good. The last 10 miles of the second lap I started getting tired so just kept going and it was a good day.”

Then he thanked his parents for their support as well as Gil with DDC and Carson City Motorsports.

Going down the order Red Herrear, who finished 7th was the first Over 30 rider to cross the line. Ricky Dahlberg won the 250 Expert class and finished 14th overall.

Zachery Tanner finished 19th and was the first amateur to complete both laps.

“The race was awesome, loved it as always,” he said. “They always put on a great race. There was about a 5-mile section that was nothing but hacks but that was the only bad part of the course. I need to thank my father as him and me start every single race right next to each other so it’s pretty awesome.”

Peyton Maas made it double when he was the first Novice to complete both laps on Sunday, which was his first big bike race. On Saturday he won the Mini bike race.

For Peyton Maas it was quite a weekend. After winning the Mini Bike race on Saturday, run on a shorter course, he made it a double by being the first Novice to complete both laps of the race.

Moving up the age scale in the Over 40 class Will Allen finished 33rd and rides in the amateur class while Jesse Richardson who is in the Expert class ended up 38th for the day.

Topping the age bracket Gil Grieve won the 60+ Class.

Mark Fitzsimmons, who ended up 35th was the first Over 50 riders to finish both laps. Topping the senior list Gil Grieve, 42nd place, won the 60+ Class.

There were also some Sunday women racing and Christian Courtney, who ended up in 58th place had the best finish of them. The next amateur woman was Kylah Krupa, who ended up 74th.

During the final few miles of the race Courtney was chasing another rider but just fell short of catching him.

Christina Courtney won the Women’s Amateur Class on Sunday.

After the race she said, “You know I pushed really hard towards the end but I didn’t have it in me. It’s a really great course, had a very good time.

“I’m still getting used to my new bike but if we put some work in we can make it happen and keep this streak going. The most challenging was probably the dust, haven’t seen dust in a couple of weeks so that sucked. Other than that it was pretty good.

Then she thanked DDC, Carson Motorsports and FPI Suspension.

The day’s turn out was very good with 158 riders starting the race. And the end the top three AA riders, Zane Roberts, Austin Serpa and Corey Fletcher were awarded their prize money.

During Sunday one rider had a self-transport while another went by Care Flight and, at the end of the race, another rider was being brought to the ambulance. Their conditions were not known when this was posted.

• Saturday is for those wanting to race on a short course. It’s also when the youngest racers have their day and they open the season.

Keeping with changes the youngest, 6 & Under, had their own race and started the day. At the finish the winner was Suzuki Fayet followed by Kuyper Brazil and Jamis Stone.

The day started with the 6 & Under class. Here Suzuki Fayet takes the checkered when he won the race.

Next up were three classes, 65 Novice, PeeWee 4-Stroke and PeeWee 7 & Over. At the checkered Ducati Fayet riding in the 7 & Over class won the overall.

Ducati Fayet, who rides in the 7 & Over Class won the second Pee Wee race.

The next two were 65 Novice riders Weston Starr and Jonny Munson. There were 37 racers in this group and the first PeeWee 4-Stroke finishes was Emma Bohan, who ended up 20th.

Saturday’s final race was for the Mini Bikes and V Women. There were four Bombers in the race and Scott Stillmock won that class.

At the checkered Peyton Maas won the overall followed by fellow Mini Expert racers Jesse Miller and Carson Key. Ending up sixth was Lee Danner, in Mini Novice while Mini Amateur was won by seventh place Ryder Allen and the highest place woman was Nicole Hanselman, who ended up 15th.

There were only 4 Bomber riders and former Motocross racer Scott Stillmock won that class.

After winning Saturday’s final race Mass said, “It was amazing, had a fun time, the course was marked perfect and I race the big bike tomorrow in 250 Novice. “

Then he thanked his parents, Dunlop, 100%, RMS and ODI for their support.

Once again the turn out was great and the rider total for the last race had 71 racers line up for the start. The numbers look good for a great season.
