RENO, NV (FEB. 3) — The Kicker AMA Arenacross series visited the Reno Livestock Events Center this weekend. It was a three-day show but the pros only raced on Friday while the weekend was for the amateurs.
The night started with a pit party where spectators could come down, walk the track then meet the riders and see their bikes. Many fans got autographs and had their checkered flags autographed.
Once that ended and the track cleared the National Anthem was sung. Then the pros began to line up for a series of four heat races where the first two transferred into the main event.
The starting area led riders onto the track, down a short straight then into a 180-degree bend. After that there were the usual jumps and a large number of whoops to negotiate.
Once the heats ended, it was time for the Micro Open Limited race for the 4 to 8 year old riders. On the gate drop Talon Hinson grabbed the lead and was never headed.
He took the checkered flag followed by Luke Taylor in second, then third place Ryder O’Connell. Two Reno riders finished fourth and fifth and they were Ducati Fayet and Wade Lavezzo.
Next up was a pair of Pro Semi Mains. Dominique Thury won the first one while Kyle Bittermanwon took the second. They both earned the single transfer spot into the main events.
A very short out an back course was set up for the Stacyc race. Riders ranged from 3 to 5-years-old and rode electric bikes. Michael Michaud took the checkered when the three-lap race ended.
Then it was time for the 1V! event, which was for money with the winner getting 80% of the pot while the runner up got 20%. Three riders started but up front local racer Aaron Siminoe was on point, won the race while Nicholas Jones was the runner up.
Next came a pair of Pro LCQ races where the winner transferred into the main. The two winners were Dylan Cunha and Adam Conway from Minden.
Next up were the Super Mini racers ages from 12 to16. Max Shane grabbed the early lead and was chased by Amari Arnold and Gardnerville racer Lahlan Turner.
In the end Shane won followed by Arnold and Turner, who swapped places a few times during the 5-lap race.
There were two Pro Main events but between them came a Pro B Main for those riders that didn’t make a transfer spot.
First on point was Cole Jones, who was soon replaced by Austin Roberts. Behind them Ty Freehill was giving chase and closing on the lead duo. Soon Freehill was second and the chase was on.
About a half lap before the white flag Freehill made his move and grabbed the lead. At the checkered he won followed by Roberts and Jones.
Arenacross saved the best for the least as they had a pair of Pro Mains. The first one was 12-laps long while the second, that featured a full invert of the field, was 16-laps long.
Although being squeezed at the first turn points leader Kyle Peters grabbed the lead with Devin Harriman right behind him. Brandon Ray was third but soon he slipped back. Peters kept extended and Harriman fell into the clutches of a charging Christopher Pregula.
At the end Peters saluted the fans as he soared over the finish jump. Prebula was the runner up while Harriman came home third ahead of Kyle Bitterman.
Finally it was time for the second AX Pro main, which ended the night. When the gate dropped Brandon Ray was on point coming out of the first turn but not far behind was fourth place Kyle Peters.
Soon Christopher Prebula took the point while Peters set his sights on taking third place. Behind the leader Peters was moving up and on lap 9 took over second, now the chase was on.
Lap after lap the two leaders tore around the track but the gap between them stayed the same. With only a few to go Peters started closing in so they were almost nose-to-tail.
After the white flag came out Peters saw his chance and used an inside move to grab the lead. He finished first followed by Prebula, Devin Harriman and Kyle Bitterman.
After the race, and before the MAVTV interview Peters said, “ We kept the points lead, it was a great night for the whole Phoenix team, my bike was incredible and were able to make it happen. Just had to settle in and push right at the end. He (Prebula) made a little mistake and that’s what happened.”
Then he thanked the Phoenix Honda Racing Team, Parts Unlimited. Then he mentioned there were many that helped him and he couldn’t have done with this without them.
