RENO, NV (12-4-22) — This Sunday two car groups, and a motorcycle group, combined forces for toy drives. One of them was the Northern Nevada Confederation of Clubs, which is various bike groups.
The 42nd Annual Reno Toy Run got going at Reno Harley Davidson. Despite the weather there were a large number of bikes and riders on hand.
Of course the weather probably held the numbers down a bit. For the past few years Troy Regas has overseen the operation and commented on this.
“I think we’re going to have a really good turn out but I don’t think we’re going to have the 1,500 motorcycles so we’ll probably be closer to eight hundred to a thousand. The reason; it’s not like the people around Reno and Sparks that can get here it’s the people from Tahoe, Truckee further out where they have a snow barrier between us. That’s the problem” he said.
Despite this Regas expects the event will collect a large amount of toys.
“We won’t quite be as big but we’ll be pretty big,” he said. “We have toy drop offs all over and a lot of people will have toys on their motorcycles so it’s a small amount here but by the time we get to the end it will be a lot.”
There was coffee and donuts available and those registering and registered got an event t-shirt. In the crowd Mrs. Claus was passing out small candy canes.
She also took time to pose with a group of people that included two boys.
At noon Santa led the parade out of the dealership and would go through downtown Reno. Then, as Regas explained they headed for a warehouse off Airway.
“We have a big warehouse and we got some barrier fence and he put 12,000 square feet of it up so we have a big area within the building. We have our own ramp, we have a huge parking lot, we could probably park a thousands cars if we had to,” he said.
Inside there will be food, raffles and they are giving away two pianos. Regas also said they presold between 700 and 800 tickets. So once again the clubs came together to make Christmas a little brighter for disadvantage youngsters.
• As the bikes began their parade the Old Slammers of Reno, a vintage VW group, started its 9th annual Toys for Kids event. They, like in years past, use the parking lot of the Northtowne Winco.
Once again weather had an effect although the stream of toys kept arriving.
On in attendance was Kim Young, the CEO of the Children’s Cabinet. This is the organization the event was helping.
Asked about the somewhat chilly event she said, “This is amazing, they’re collecting toys for children for the holidays. They’ve reached out to their friends and advertised. We’re going to get toys in the children’s hands for the holidays.
“It’s been a real steady stream of people coming in with bags of toys. We’ve got one car, a vintage VW van, almost filled we’ll be out here for the next couple of hours.”

• Earlier that morning Reno Cars & Coffee staged their 7th Annual Toy Run . While the turnout was less than usual they still had a fair amount of cars on hand. Then at 11:30 people started for the Old Slammers function where the toys were donated.
In fact Lance Freitas, who runs the group, thanked everyone that showed up. On the group’s Face Book site he posted a group of pictures. Their next meet is on Sunday, December 18th.
