FALLON, NV (July 4) — Rattlesnake Raceway has traditional race on July 4th every year. It’s also the site of the town’s fireworks display and this time there were some special things added to the show.
Once the heat races were done the Monster Truck ,Airborne Ranger gave a great show. Ranger Joe vaulted over cars and ended by doing donuts on the infield. e also did a second show later.
Then many of the drivers, in their cars with passengers headed for the front straight. After everyone arrived there was a very special moment when Paul Carter proposed marriage to his girlfriend racer Crystal Konthy.
Many cheered as she said yes and he put an engagement ring on her. Then they joined the others in the traditional candy toss to the fans.
One the track was ready the Bootleggers took the green flag and charged into Turn 1. Up front early leader Ray Blankenship was holding off Stuart Satathite.
Several cars bounced off the front stretch wall and late in the race leader Blankenship hit so hard the impact broke the front suspension of his car.
When racing resumed now leader Satathite took off. Chasing him was Taggart Garland, who ended up second while Wade Lumsden finished third.
Next up were the Hobby Stocks and the green launched 10 of them. Up front Tori Edgington-Ausano was on point with Marie Curtis and Dan Dian giving chase. Toward the end of the race a scramble caused a red flag but once that was cleaned up the green waved again.
Not to be denied Edgintton-Ausano took off with Curtis and Dias trailing. They finished in that order.
When the green waved to start the Mini Stock feature Jeff Tuttle briefly held the lead until Travis Showe used an outside move to grat the point. Behind them Colton Blankenship and Joseph Cook were disputing third.
Up front Showe was leaving everyone in his dust until a caution with three to go bunched the field. On the green Showe took off and claimed the victory followed by Tuttle and third place Blankenship.
Nine Dwarf Cars took the green and Dan Geil briefly was on point until the other front row car driven by Joe Frock took the lead. From then on the chase was on.
Two cautions slowed the pace but each time Frock was on point whenever the green waved again. After the last caution Glenn Sciarani had moved into third.
Even thought he’s hardly raced during the past month Frock hadn’t lost anything and claimed the victory. Geil was the runner up with Sciarani third and Jeff Foster finishing fourth.
When the Sport Mod feature began it appeared that Shayna Nieman was in the cat bird’s season. Giving chase was Ray Ballard. An early caution slowed thing but when racing resumed Nieman was on point.
Behind her Keen Kentopp and Ballard were disputing second. Eventually Ballard spun and had to go to the back.
After that he began a charge through the pack. Heading toward the white flag Ballard used an outside move going through Turn 4 to take the lead. He would score the victory with Nieman second and Kentopp ending up third.
Only four IMCA Mods were on hand and first on point was Cody Kalmer. A two-car tangle going into Turn 1 put Michael Anderson out of the race but really didn’t do much damage to Wade Lumsden’s car.
Due to the hour the driver’s were put on the sidelines while the fireworks show honoring Independence Day happened. Everyone at the track was treated to a pretty good who with fireworks going off outside the pit area as well inside the oval.
Once racing was resumed there was a pause while Lumsden changed a flat tire. On the green Kalmer briefly led again until Travis White took the point. Behind him was Lumsden and the chase was on.
In fact they posted the closest finish of the night with White maybe a couple of tenths of a second ahead of Lumsden while Kalmer ended up third.
Finally it was time for the IMCA Stock Car division. These are becoming quite popular and some drivers are switching to this group.
When the green waved Rusty McMillan and Marie Curtis were on the front row and after a short side-by-side duel McMillan too the point. Jesse Gonzalez looked like he might make a three-way duel for the lead but he slowed part way through the race and faded to fifth.
Up front it was all McMillan although Curtis wasn’t that far behind him. At the checkered, which ended the night, McMillan scored the victory followed by Curtis, Craig Nieman with Mikki Beuchat in fourth.
• In Sunday’s races Travis Showe was the Mini Stock winner while Dan Geil scored the Dwarf Car victory and David Ausano was the Hobby Stock victor.
Bob Vaden won in Bootleggers, Jimmy Ray Huffman in Sport Mods. In the IMCA Modifieds Wade Lumsden was the winner while Craig Nieman won in the IMCA Stock Car division.
