BBMX AWARDS BANQUET

RENO, NV (Jan. 29) — BBMX (Battle Born Motocross) held its annual award ceremony at Boomtown. It was a packed house and there were a lot of trophies to hand out as well as raffle prizes.

For those that rode in all 11 rounds there were special grand prizes that were handed out in a special raffle.

The ceremony also marked the changing of the guard as the current board decided to move on so now there is a new board at the helm. For Dana Losey it marked his final time as MC for the event.

Tony Lavezzo is the BBMX president.

Before the buffet dinner and ceremony began this reporter had a chance to talk with Tony Lavezzo, the new president.

“Last season was great, the turnouts have been getting better and better every year,” he said. “And this year we had a great turnout and you can see by how big of a banquet we’re having.

“So the Nevada community has a lot of enthusiasm for racing right now. We’re looking for another great season to build on what we had for 21.”

Currently the BBMX has several TBA in its schedule as those would usually be filled by the Fernley Motocross Track or the “Sandbox” as its usually called.

“The Sandbox, I know that OTHG is working with that but just like everything with the speed of government it doesn’t go quick,” he said. “So I know that OTHG and OTMX is working to one day have the Sandbox comeback but right now it’s all up in the air.

“We’re looking hopefully in the future we’ll be able to partner with 95 and have races out there. And hopefully we’ll have more information as the season goes on but that’s where we are at right now.”

Before the ceremony began everyone got to partake in a buffet Boomtown provided. It was quite a selection and everyone seemed pleased with the dinner, once that ended it was time to start handing out the trophies.

The closest points finish came in the 85cc, 13 & Up Class where Rogen Hill won by two points over runner up Hugwapi Minder while Connor Gaarenstroom was third.

Looking over the final points results the 85cc (13 & Up) class had the closest finish. Rogen Hill won that class title by a scant two points over Hugwapi Minder.  Hill also won the 85cc Open and will move up to the big bikes next year. However currently he’s on the mend after breaking a femur while training on his new ride.

Next closest points finishwas in the85cc, 12 & Under Class where Rocket Richardson won by three points over runner up Jonny Simpson. Coming in third and fourth were Garrett Berrington and Kolton Sego.

The next closest finish came in 85cc (12 & Under) where Rocket Richardson won that title by just three points over second place Jonny Simpson.

Two other classes had a seven point difference between first and second. One was Supermini where Samuel McCord earned that championship while Rogen Hill came in second. Next was in the 65cc (9 & Under) class where Cord Hunter ended up just seven points ahead of Kylan Simpson.

The youngest class is the 50cc, 4 to 6 and Parker Hatfield won with Charlie Bagan in second and Wade Lavezzo third. The margin was eight points between first and second.

In the youngest class, the 50cc (4 to 6) the difference was only eight points. Young Parker Hatfield topped the class while Charlie Bagan was the runner up.

Joshua Black scored two titles as he won in Schoolboy and in the Big Bike Open class. In Collegeboy the winner was Ethan Lewis. Moving to the Woman’s classes the winner in the A group was Hayden Losey. In the B group, first place was earned by Taylor Kemp.

At the top of the age list was 50+ Intermediate winner Donald Goines.

Moving up the age ladder Mike Cross was the 40+ Beginner winner while Adam McMillen took the 40+ Junior title. Finally Donald Gones won the 50+ Intermediate Class.

During the evening both Losey and Lavezzo thanked the previous board and introduced the new one that will guide BBMX in the future. All the new board members are racers in their own right.

Finally, after all the regular raffle prizes had been handed out, and they ranged from tires, accessories, toys and new tanks for fuel, it was time for the grand prize. This came after all the regular grand prizes had also been handed out.

A delighted Lilly Powning won the super grand prize of a pit bike.

To be eligible a rider had to compete in all 11 rounds of the season. When the ticket was drawn Lily Powning won and is now the proud owner of a brand new pit bike.

Now that the awards are over everyone will start getting ready for the upcoming season. Those wishing further information should go to the BBMX website at, www.battlebornmx.com or their Face Book page.
