SPARKS, NV (Jan. 8) — Most of MRANN gathered at the Sparks Nugget for the annual awards banquet where champions were honored. After a buffet dinner everyone sat down and got ready as there was much hardware to be given out.
Before things got going this reporter had a chance to talk with MRANN’s president Ricky Dahlberg.
“I’m the current president and also president for this year,” he said. “This year is one of the strongest we’ve ever had in a while with over 400 members. The way our memberships are going so far this year, and we just opened on the first, we’re already looking to at least beat if not exceed that. Things are looking really good right now as desert racing is definitely strong here in Northern Nevada.”
Dahlberg is very optimistic about the 2022 season.
“I think we’ll probably, hopefully, average around 200 to 250 racers per race. The races earlier in the season we usually have a few more than later on in the season but that’s probably what we’re looking at for our average through out the year,” he said.
After dinner it was time to start handing out the awards.
It began with the 6 & Under class that runs on Saturday. Ducati Fayet was the champion with Parker Hatfield and Charlie Ragan earning second and third.
Progressing through the classes Marlon Hondo was the Bomber champion while Taylor Kemp is the Women’s Expert champion.
After that the Sunday champions were announced. Several times the class champions were omitted at they are announced at the end.
In the Sunday group Cami Ingram won in Women’s Amateur while the oldest, in the “Gentleman’s or 60 plus,” class the winner was Anthony Leake was the winner.
During the evening folks were given a phone number to call and vote for the Race of the Year.
In the end it was the Trail Blazers that won that honor.
Another honor given is the Family-of-the-Year. This year’s winner was the Delaney family, which was highlighted by Nathan Delany’s championship.
Toward the end the individual championships were honored and received their trophies.
Then it was time to honor the 2021 Point’s champion, Brody Honea, who also won the Open Expert title.
After that the top 20 riders were handed out their number for this season. Those riders will carry their number with a blue background this season.
The top two was a family affair as Brody Honea will carry the #1 plate for the second year in a row. His uncle, for former champion Reece Honea, will carry the #2 plate. While Brody rode a big bike his uncle rode a smaller 125cc bike.
Asked about this championship Honea said, “ It’s my second back-to-back year. When I was a little kid never knew if I was going to win a championship. I ended up pulling two off and added to the Honea overall, I think we’ve got four with Reese. Cool to add that with my uncle. Thanks MRANN, my family and all my sponsors.”
Now everyone has about a month to get ready as the first race falls on the weekend of February 19/20, President’s Day weekend.
