BOTTLE CREEK, NV (Nov. 14) — The 2021 MRANN season ended this weekend about 30 miles north of Imlay at Bottle Creek. A good turn out was blessed with great weather and it was a day of hard racing.
Keeping with a great weather and end of the season the Gold Diggers had a new banner. Apparently it was to celebrate someone’s cousin.
As usual everyone lined up in their respective ranks with the Experts taking off first in a huge cloud of dust. Once that had cleared from where the loop went up the side of a hill into a gap the Amateurs were launched then after a spell the Novice riders got their turn on the course.
At the end of the first lap leader Brody Honea was ripping and finish his first lap at least a minute ahead of the next rider Irving Powers. About a minute later Reece Honea arrived at the pits ahead of Corey Fletcher and Willy Heiss.
Despite crashing after hitting a big rock on his second lap Honea ended his second championship season with a clear-cut victory. His elapsed time was 2:47:47.
After taking the checkered flag and being greeted Honea said, “Back to back years, kept it smooth all year no mistakes, had one bad race was trying to win all of most of them so I could get the overall one before the last one. This clinches my open championship but won the overall the last race.
“Course was dusty, but once I got out in front of everybody just tried to ride clean and stay smooth the whole time. Course is fun but a little beat up though.”
Then he thanked his parents, girlfriend, Trailblazers MC as well as sponsors Absolute Draining, O’Neil and DDC.
Runner up Powers won the Over 40 Expert class with a time of 2:51:31 and third place Reece Honea used a steady ride to finish third with a time of 2:52:06
After the race Powers explained there was a problem that kind of solved itself. “The race was really good, I ended up getting the hole shot and was out front for a while. Then my skid plate came unbolted so I was trying to kick it off and finally it fell off. Brody got me a little bit after alternate pits.
“Regardless he rode great and I rode great. The course was excellent, they did a really good job of marketing it, especially since there was a lot of spots to get lost. It was a great race.”
Then he thanked his fiancée, daughter Aspen, who was delighted to see her father after the race, McCoy’s Off-Road, Works Connection and MX Trophies.
Looking at the finish fourth place Willy Heiss managed to edge out Corey Fletcher by a scant 15 hundreths of a second. The next closest finish came in the final 100 yards when the first amateur Kai Kapahee made finial charge that almost ended badly but he claimed eighth place by three one hundreds of a second over Justin Miller who won the Over 30 expert class.
After catching his breath Kapahh said, “It’s not easy, pretty fun, track was great and couldn’t ask for better conditions. Not much dust unless it was a silt road.”
Then he thanked his parents, pit crew, friends and sponsors.
Looking further down the list Adam DeVargas ended up 18th overall with a time of 3:25:18 and was the first Novice to compete both laps.
Asked about the day, he said, “The race was amazing, it was long, hard, difficult but challenging and I feel good. Last race of the year so that was pretty fun.”
Then he thanked God, his wife, kids and volunteers that ran the race.
Looking at the list Justin Miller finished ninth and won the 40+ Expert class. He had an elapsed time of 3:12:20.
Curtis Dice was 12th and the first 50+ Expert to complete both laps. His elapsed time was 3:16:46 not bad for his age group.
Going further down the results Christina Courtney was the first woman to complete both laps. Her time was 3:51:12 and she won Sunday Women Amateur.
The oldest winner was Anthony Leake and his time was 4:09:51. This gave him the Over 60 Class win. Not bad for this veteran racer.
Handling the checkered flag was Gold Digger president Curtis Calder. He mentioned the event combined two clubs and benefited the one helping.
“We’re holding out race to benefit the Corey Herring Scholarship,” he said. “The Corey Herring Club came out and helped up with the marking administration of the course. We were really happy to be partnered with them this year.”
• Saturday also had racing starting with the Pee Wees and Trevor Barkdull was the overall winner riding in the Mini Mini Novice class. The first 7+ rider was sixthplace Telegen Biddle while 10th place Maxwell Starr was the first Pee Wee 4-Stroke winner and Robert Belingen was the first Pee Wee 6 & under winner.
+ The Mini Bikes and Saturday Women also raced that day on a short track and Laine Stephens won the over all and Mini Expert class. Sixth place Taylor Kemp was the Saturday Woman Expert winner.
