BLUE WATER FLAT (Oct 9) — The AMA National Hare and Hound series visited northern Nevada this weekend. Both the Cheaters and Rim Benders clubs from MRANN played host as they staged the event at Blue Wing Flat outside of Toulon.
The one-day event started with the youth races then it was time for the big bike show. There were four lines and the Pros led the charge, down a slope, making a sharp right turn and off into the desert.
In the pro ranks the championship was on the line as defending title holder Dalton Shirey had to work his way forward through traffic. Ahead was Joseph Wasson eager to clinch his first title.
Up front, and getting the hole shot was Preston Campbell. Unfortunately mistakes and a couple of crashes dropped him back to fourth at the finish.
As the race progressed Zane Roberts and Dalton Shirey found a rider pinned under his bike. Both stopped, helped the rider, made sure he was okay then resumed their race.
After the first lap Shirey was on point, had a pretty good lead until he hit a rock. Fortunately he was able to get back up and ended up first overall at the finish.
It was a challenging day for the first two and after he took the checkered flag Shirey said, “The race was pretty good, I didn’t get the greatest start. It was the first time this year I had to come through the pack. I had a whole bunch of arm pumps so I just kind of sat there for a moment, got myself cooled off. I know I could get these guys, just wasn’t able to do it with arm pump.”
His next challenge came toward the of the second lap.
“Once that went away I put a charge on, passed them, then 15 to 20 miles back from the finish I freaking hit a rock, put me straight to my head, broke my visor, went over the bars, there was no saving it. I was able to pick myself back up, my levers were messed up but I was able to slam them back into place.
“That allowed Zane (Roberts) and Joe Wasson to catch back up to me but once I got going again, and not discombobulated from the crash, I started pulling away from all the guys.”
Then he thanked Three Brothers, Huskie, Hatch Racing and Good Tie Racing. Wasson, who finished second overall also had a very challenging day but one that clinched his Team Beta’s first championship.
After the race, when his team put the Number One plate on his bike, he said, “ I’m the number one champion of the National Hare & Hound series. The course was awesome but I struggled so bad, it was like, ‘I just got to do well.’ Man, I had arm pump the whole way, felt like I was a total beginner rider. But I finally achieved something my whole family has been working for. I thank the Lord, the Man Upstairs as he’s always riding shotgun.”
He also thanked his wife, parents, family, Beta USA, his mechanic Jason, Fly Racing, Scott Goggles and several other sponsors.
At the podium ceremony Wasson was given the Champion’s plaque. To say he was overjoyed would be a huge understatement.
The highest placed local was Austin Serpa, from the Mason Valley Dirt Squirts, who finished fifth overall as well as fifth in the pro class.
Next on the podium were the 250 Pros. Carter Klein won so that championship will be decided in the final race of the series. “The race started out pretty good and I was able to get around Clayton Roberts for the lead,” Klein said on the podium.
Another class where the championship will go down to the final round is Pro Women. For the entire race Britney Gallegos and Rachel Stout were close to each other. At the end of their second lap there were less than a second apart with third place Ashlee Gage finishing just ahead of Lexy Baker, who won the A Women class
• Earlier that day the youth classes got their chance as they kicked off the racing day. Jason Harris in the Big W class won the overall followed by Caleb Tate in the Mini 85cc class. The highest placed local was Jordan Mass, riding out of the Lassen MC finished sixth overall followed by Jesse Miller from the Mason Valley Dirt Squirts, who ended up seventh overall.
• After the Hare and Hound event was over MRANN staged on of its support races. The one is for the Mini Bikes and Saturday Women. This time Jordan Mass, a Mini Expert, won the overall while Peyton Pass was the first Mini Amateur finishing fourth.
Coming in fifth and winning Saturday Women was Chrystal Ponsock, who rides in the Corey Herring club.
• Sunday was an all MRANN day and the Pee Wees got things rolling with their race. At the finish Wyatt Mirell, a 7+ rider took first overall followed by Vaugn Brannan and Maverick Park. Then it was time for the big bikes on the long course.
Continuing his winning ways this season Brody Honea took first overall. Coming home second was Clayton Gerstner followed by Reece Honea, Irving Powers and Otto Pearson.
