DESERT PARK RACEWAY: NNKC ENDS SEASON

STEAD, NV (Sept. 5) — The Northern Nevada Kart Club (NNKC) ended it 2021 season this Sunday. They made up a round heavy smoke canceled earlier and for many it was the championship round.

Starting the program was the Kid Kart Class, only three were on hand this time. Two of them had problems with Turn 5 but thanks to a pair of fathers both drivers were able to continue.

Cash Prater was the first Kid Kart to reach the finish line. This is his final race in this class.

Cash Prater was the first to reach the finish as he had a fast, consistent run. At 7-years-old he’s going to move up to Junior 1 next season. Hunter Nelson was the second to reach the finish line while Davey Jorgenson was the third.

Next is the Junior 1 Class and unlike the Kid Kart racers, who do six laps for their main, they do the a full 14-lap main.

Right after the green Kayden Williams was on point then Jeremiah Nobles took the lead. Behind them Jeremy Heath held third while Skylar Gagnon was sitting in fourth.

In Junor 1 winner Kayden Williams leads Jeremiah Nobles and Jeremy Heath.

Soon Williams retook the lead with Nobles close behind. Then they began to pull away from the pack and stage their own private battle for the lead.

In the end Williams reached the checkered flag almost eight tenths of a second ahead of Nobles.

After the post race weigh in Williams got to throw a dice to see what would be checked. While NASCAR has its “Room of Doom,” cars have to pass through before a race NNKC has a “Table of Doom” where karts are checked after a race.

Asked about the race Williams said, “It wasn’t easy, Jeremiah was on my bumper. I tried to stay in front of him but he passed me and got in the lead. I got him coming out of the straightaway into 1.”

Then he thanked Joe for giving him money to keep racing. He also expressed appreciation for his parents support as well as to fellow racers Jeremiah and Jeremy.

As usual the TAG and KA100 classes combine in a single race but with a staggered start. First to see the green are the faster TAG karts then a few seconds later the KA100 karts reach the green flag.

The first overall leader was Adrik Owen followed by William Owen. Behind them Mike McMullen took off leaving fellow KA100 drivers Gerry Altamira and Russell Rosario in his wake.

In the end William Owen took the overall and TAG victory while McMullen scored the KA100 class victory.

William Owen was first overall and the TAG Class winner.

After the race Owen said, “It was a little cat and mouse going on there. I had a fast kart today and it was a matter of just getting out in front with nobody to block me. Last week I thanked the wrong one so today I want to thank Robert Judd Racing.”

Mike Mullen won the KA100 class victory.

For his part KA100 winner McMullen said, “Not too bad for an old man huh? It was working really good, handled good, lots of power, didn’t have any problems all day long. Nat’s my friend, he helps me an awful lot and was nice enough not to race in this class today.”

The Shifter class uses a standing start and when the green lights came on Jeff Wamre took off followed by Dean Andrews and Adam Auerbach. On this day Mitch Kennedy returned after missing several races.

Dean Andrews was the 125 Shifter winner.

After several laps Andrews got past Wamre on the run up to Turn 5. After that Wamre had to hold off Auerbach while Kennedy ran solo in fourth.

Skylar Corson won the F80 shifter class. Next year she’ll be racing at 125 shifter.

At the rear of the pack Skyler Corson, in an F80, was chasing Gerry Williams what Nat Sombatsiri was in the other F80 shifter kart. It’s been eight years since he raced an F80 kart.

In the end Andrews won with a second and a half margin over Wamre, who held off third place Auerback. Back in the pack Gorson, who moved up to a 125 next year, won the F80 class with Sombatsiri second.

After the race Andrews said, “I got luck as he (Wamre) made a little mistake and I just capitalized though. It was a good race, he was real fast and knows how to keep his kart three wide so it is hard getting around him.”

Then he thanked his father and everyone around him like the Nobles and Brooks Anderline.

Although the Super Stock race began close it was a run away for winner Kory Williams. At the checkered flag Williams scored the victory while, just over three seconds back, Jimmy Johns was second.

Kory Williams scored a runaway victory in Super Stock.

After catching his breath Williams said, “I left it all out there. My kid put a lot of pressure on me, he went out and won so I had to go out and win. But now Mom’s race is getting ready to start so she starts second and hopefully can get the win. That would be cool if all three could win. Oh and I sealed the championship.”

Then he thanked his family as they are first and foremost with their help and support.

The Heavy LO206 Class had 13 karts take the green. First on point was Rachael Williams with Eric Kuzemchak on her back bumper. Soon they swapped places with Jake Burchette sitting solo in third.

Up front Kuzemchak was on a charge and won. Almost four seconds behind him was Williams, who used a steady drive to claim second and even further back was Burchette in third.

In Heavy LO206 the winner was Eric Kuzemchak.

Later an overjoyed Kuzemchak said, “Invader 68 themed after Reno and World War II aircraft. All the hard work it took, it paid off today. I don’t know how many club races I’ve had but all that matters is that we ended the season strong. Just because last weekend we had equipment failure that took us out of the race and we had a solid podium as well.

“It’s just all this work we did with otthis all this season. The people at Cole Nelson racing the times I’ve pitted there they’ve given me support. I put all my confidence in them. This is the weekend I’m just glad everything turned out the way it was. I have all my supporters here, there’s even some people that drove all the way from Norcal again just to watch me rock this place. And then the fact my dad, he’s doing well after having a health problem Saturday morning where he had to go to the hospital. I’m just glad I could enjoy today, all of our work paid off and we’ve got this championship this year.”

When the Junior 2 field of six racers took off the championship was pretty well set but in racing one never wants to assume anything. Up front points leader Brooks Anderline took off and left everyone in his wake.

The race was Anderline’s and he scored the victory. Behind him was Giovanni Medina in second while Isaiah Nobles was third.

Clinching his championship Brooks Anderline scored a dominate victory in Junior 2.

While waiting for his kart to be checked at the Table of Doom, Anderline said, “Basically if I had finished last and Isaiah had won he would win the championship. But Luckily we got out front and the gap out there. I was focused on engine RPM and looking at the micron to see how many miles an hour I got out of a corner.”

Then he thanked his parents, Isaiah for being there, his friend Gio (Medina) and everyone that supported him. He added special appreciation to Cole Nelson Racing the Poppa Jeff, his motor builder.

The Senior LO206 Class had the honor of ending the 2021 point’s season. Eight drivers took the green flag and roared into the first turn.

The season’s final victory was by Deeahme Malone as he won the Senior LO206 main.

Up front was the most veteran of them Steve Dow followed by young guns Stevie-Ray Rosario and Deeahme Malone. A few laps later Malone took the point and Dow got busy holding off Rosario.

As the race progressed Joe Senna worked his way to second dropping Dow to third ahead of Rosario, who was now fourth. The chase was on as Senna set after the leader.

In the end Malone won by just over three seconds over runner up Senna. Behind him Dow finished third with Rosario fourth. Dow later admitted on how great it was for an older guy to finish third with all the young guns.

Deeahme Malone gets the final checkered flag and win ending NNKC’s 2021 season.

After the dust settled a delighted Malone said, “I’m really greatful that we did all this and ended up at this. This is my first championship win ever. I thank my dad of course, he’s my mechanic, a great mechanic and my family has been very supportive to me.”

Now except for testing after the Air Races, Desert Park Raceway will be silent. That is until next spring when it again will echo to the sounds of kart racing again.
