STEAD, NV (July 11) — On a hot July day the KPX Karting Championship series visited here. The events was hosted by the Northern Nevada Kart Club and as usual some members were intent on defending their home track.
Saturday was for practice and qualifying. Sunday began with practice followed by two sets of heat races. Then around 2:30 the mains began.
As usual the Kid Kart class started things rolling. Drivers in this class are the youngest ones and they are earning their racing spurs.
Soon after the green waved, and the kids used a rolling start, Leila Pinten took the lead and motor away to claim the victory. Behind her Cash Prater was second followed by Brody Mitchel and Cayden Duncan.
Next on tap was the Junior 2 class and 15 racers took the green. Four of them tangled Turn 2 but all were able to continue. Up front Matthew Fecko was on point with Cooper Perez and Trenten Helie giving chase.
Two laps into the race Brooks Anderline apparently clipped a curb and his kart lost its chain so his day was done.
Upfront there was a four-way duel for second, then the leader pulled a gap only to have the lead group close up int he final laps. By now Perez was second and had leader Fecko in his sights.
With two laps to go Perez made the winning pass but only beat Fecko by seven tenths of a second at the line.
After the post-race weigh in Perez said, “It was fun. Going into 1 I just kept going and followed it through.”
Then he thanked Cole Nelson Racing, Invaders, IRE Motor Builders and his parents.
Nine racers took the green when the Masters 206main begain. Up front Douglas Booher was on point. But he had close company with Eric Kuzemchak, Paul Booker and Steve Dow giving chase.
Apparently an early challenge for the lead ended up in a tangle that put Paul Booher out after three laps. After going off track Kuzemchak was able to continue but too far back to catch anyone.
This gave Douglas Booher a huge lead. Behind him Dow and Clark were in a duel for second. Unfortunately the spindle on Dow’s left front wheel sending off track at Turn 5 but he wasn’t injured.
Up front Booher took the victory with an over eight second lead over runner up Clark while Josh Prater was third ahead of Tom Agan.
“I knew right away I was going to be in for a fight, but didn’t know when he was going to bring it to me. I wasn’t sure if it was going to be at the end of 1, or if I screwed up it would be on the infield,” Booher said. “He went for it, I saw him and I guess tried to defend it on the next lap.
“We both went sideways, he actually took the lead but I was able to get it back. I guess it took out my brother and one other guy. That was good racing and just glad I made it through.”
Then he thanked his brother, Nevada Kart Sport, Andy Fecko, Jerry from Unleashed Power, the whole team and his family.
There were only three drivers competing in the KA100 Senior Class. Things were a bit confused at what appeared to be the start but soon things were in order and the green flag waved for real.
Up front it was a duel between Andrew Cushman and J.C. Perez while Yashom Kapoor was never a factor. In the end Cushman won by over a tenth of a second while Perez was a close second.
“Me and my teammate J.C. Perez have been working all weekend testing for a bigger race in California next weekend. It’s been a really productive weekend, pretty small field but I had fun. I really want to thank GFC Karting, Sweet Tech Engines for their continuing support,” Cushman said.
The Junor 1 main was a nose-to-tail duel between eventual winner Mikael Avanesian and Matt Guidera. Late in the race brief contact slowed Guidera just a bit and gave Avanesian some breathing room.
While Avanesian escaped and won Guidera was able to hold onto second as he reached the finish one tenth of the second ahead of third place Zoquan Holbrook.
After the weigh in Avanesian was asked if it’s easier to have a big lead or race with someone. He said, “It’s easier tohae somebody to race with. The track is good.”
Then he thanked Nevada Kart Sport.
Next up was the KA100 Junior class and eight drivers took the green. Right at the start it became a three-driver race. On point was Jack Schrady closely followed by Sephen Eisert and Valentino Garbarino.
The lead trio did separate a bit for a while but closed up in the final laps. After the white flag, with a half of a lap to go Eisert was able to make the winning pass as they came off Turn 5.
Despite this Schrady was ready to give up but wound up only 0.181 seconds behind winner Eisert while Garbarino was a bit further back in third.
“I had an opportunity so I did the bump and run. Had to go into the dirt a little bit,” Eisert said later.
The largest class of the day, as it is locally, is the 206 Senior group. When the green waved 17 drivers raced down the straight and into the Turn 1 and 2 complex, fortunately all of them made it.
Up from Isaac Bourque was on point followed by a group of racers. That group did some place swapping as the laps passed by.
Late in the race the lead trio closed up with Zach Rivera giving Bourque a run for his money and even made some challenges for the lead. Only a couple feet behind them was Boden Barnwell waiting for one of the lead duo to make a mistake.
The top three Bourque, Rivera and Barnwell all crossed the line with less than two tenths of a second between first and third.
After being congratulated this reporter asked Bourque if he know how close the others were to him.
“No I didn’t know how close they were. I was just running my line, running consistently. Thought I pulled away but they got the draft on me. I know Zach was on the outside so had to play defense,” he said.
Then he thanked his father, Cole Nelson Racing and Jeff for a good engine.
After the largest class came the smallest class to end the day. Only two drivers took the green when the Mini-Swift main begin. While both racers drove well it was no contest as Erik Doan crossed the finish line about a half lap ahead of John Doherty.
For the first time the KPX Series will visit Desert Park Raceway twice this season with the next appearance will be on the weekend of September 25 and 26. The Northern Nevada will have its next club race on July 25.
