WESTERN STATES DWARF CAR NATIONALS

QUINCY, CA (May 15) – The annual visit by the Western States Dwarf Car Association brought 87 of these cars to American Valley Speedway in Quincy. Drivers came from all over the west including a husband-wife driving team that made the 21-hour tow from Colorado.

The race also has another name, as it’s The Dave Richardson Leroy Day Memorial. It honors two racers that competed in Northern Nevada that lost their lives a few years ago.

Jimmy Damron leads the memorial parade laps for Dave Richardson, Leroy Kay and his father Todd Dameron.

Before the night’s racing got going the drivers did several 4-wife parade laps in their honor. This year they also honored Todd Damron, a car builder from Las Vegas that passed a few months ago.

All 87 Dwarf Cars were involved in the 4-wide memorial laps.

Damron’s son Jimmy led the parade laps in a car that had flags with the numbers Kay and Richardson raced with. Once the memorial was completed the heat races began.

Each Dwarf Car division also had a fast dash on Saturday. Those winners were Teegan Fisher in Sportsman, Tim Fitzpatrick in Veteran’s as well as Adam Teves in the Pro division. In addition there were so many pro drivers that division had a B man to set the field and that winner was Darren Brown.

When the green waved for the Veteran division’s 20-lap main Tim Fitzpatrick was on point but an early caution slowed things down. Next on point was Teegan Fischer but behind him Tanner Curr was on a charge.

Tanner Curr speedway toward Turn1 on his way to winning the Sportsman main.

Soon Curr was on point and continued to hold it after the last caution. Fischer wound up second followed by Orey Woods and Will Dykeman.

Tanner Curr was won the Sportsman main.

Curr then stopped on the front straight for comments to the track announcer and this reporter.   “I just fund something up top,” he said. “Was trying to run the bottom, wasn’t working, moved up a little and that seemed to work. On the restarts I saw the flag and just drove it.”

He then thanked all the people with the Northwest Dwarf Car group and his sponsors.

Breaking the Dwarf car divisions were two of the track’s regular divisions. First up were the Mini Stocks that ran a 16-lap main.

Once she was in the lead Suzi Schmitt was on cruise as the won the mini stock main.

First on point was Johnny Moya until a charging Suzi Schmitt took the lead with an outside move. From that point on she was on cruise and even after a restart due to a short caution zipped to the victory followed by Moya and third place Colby Russell.

Next Dwarf Car division was the Veterans, who also ran a 20-lap main. When the green waved 24 cars took off and roared into the first turn.

Unfortunately Fitzpaterick spun and the melee collected six cars. Five were able to continue but Gary Wegener’s night was over as his car was towed to the pits.

Once everyone got back in order the green waved again. This time Mike Reeder led until Glenn Sciarani briefly took the lead.

There was another lead change but a caution had everyone revert to the previous lap. This time Sciarani led until Stacy Woods took over the point.

Unfortunately Woods car began to smoke and ended his night. After another caution Reeder was back on point followed by Kevin Mriaglio and Sciarani, who was having the best run of his time in Dwarf Cars.

The safety crew is rolling the car of David Rose back on its wheels after an accident.

Then there was a back straight incident that caused a red flag. The car of David Rosa was in the wall but further down track the car of Mark Pollock was on its roof. The emergency crew made up of Quincy Fire Department as well as medics from Care Flight rushed to his aid.

Before letting him get out of his car the medics were talking with David Rose as he had rolled it.

After rolling his car on its wheels they had made sure he wasn’t injured and they could safely have him exit the car. Then the track crew cleaned up debris and the field began to move and reform.

Kevin Miraglio on his way to winning the Veteran’s main event.

Reeder was again on point until contact moved him up the track in Turn 2 and he would end up seventh. That’s when Miraglio took over the lead and would claim the victory followed by Sciarani, who was also celebrating his birthday, and Richie Abbott.

Kevin Miraglio after winning the Veteran Division main.

At the post race interview Miraglio expressed regret over that contact.

“Mike’s a good friend and it was a little rougher pass than what I usually do. I really wasn’t expecting to pass him there,” he said. “We were able to go a little bit deeper and I think we were at that point where he couldn’t see me, just kind of a crappy deal.

“The track was good tonight. Kind of weird as looks like it rubbered up on the outside. So I went up, tried it there but it seemed safer to just stay on the bottom.”

For Miraglio it as a turn around from what he went through the previous night.

“After flipping last night I was trying to get my car back to where it was driveable. Most of it was bodywork, my throttle body fell off and had to change a lower. Really wasn’t a bunch of stuff I had to change.”

Then he thanked Danny Wagner at Wagner Racing as he sets up the car and sponsor King’s Roofing. He also thanked his mother, John & Ashley for what they do as well as his aunt Vicky, who has Murals by Victoria.

Next on track were the Sport Mods that raced a 20-lap main. On the green Tyler Rogers led with Buddy Olc giving chase.

A spin gathered the field and on the green they took off only to slow again when Tom Frogett spun. After the restart Rogers took off and went into cruise as he pulled away.

It was a run away victory for Tyler Rogers as he won the Sport Mod main.

One more caution would slow things when Bion Barr and Olc spun. Once again Rogers took off as there would be no catching him on this night. For his part Frogett was able to get back to second at the end.

Tyler Rogers and his family celebrate the win in the Sport Mod main.

Stopping on the front stretch Rogers said, “I knew if I got out front it would be hard to get me. The car was good all night, we’ve been rolling pretty good.

“The luck we had has been absolutely horrible so it’s good to be back. The track was definitely something I haven’t seen here it goes absolutely dry slick but I liked it as it was racy.”

Then he thanked his parents, everyone that helps him and Eva by Twisted.

Finally it was time for the 30-lap main and 25 cars took the green. Before that one car stalled and Kobe Kerns was pushed back to the pits.

Up front Adam Teves was on point and began to distance himself from the pack. His advantage was erased by a caution then there came two more cautions.

The last one is where several cars tangled in Turn 2 but the track crew was able to get free and everyone continued. There was a red flag for another car but that was quickly resolved.

When racing resumed Darren Brown grabbed the lead while Teves fell back to fourth. One more caution with three to go slowed things but on the green Brown took off and won followed by Ryan Winter and Devin Breese.

On the front straight Brown’s father came out and gave his son a huge hug as they celebrated.

Then Brown said, “I can’t thank my dad enough. We’ve worked on this all week you know, just trying to set up for this place. We’ve been here in the past but it was actually different so it was a lot more rubber.

“Yesterday lost the motor so can’t thank him enough for everything he does as this was a rocket ship. I love this track, the atmosphere, where you are all the tall trees it’s beautiful out here. In the past its been one line but tonight it’s kind of ripping around where ever you want, as fast as you can go without burning the right rear off.”

Then he thanked his parents, crew and sponsors.

After Saturday’s racing was ove everyone retired for the traditional BBQ in the pits as well as the awards ceremony. Next event at American Valley Speedway is on Saturday, May 29.

• There was a full show on Friday and the winners were Scotty Preast in Sportsman, Stacy Woods in Veteran and the Pro winner was Joe Frock.
