FERNLEY, NV (April 17) — Norcal Rock Racing brought its brand of off road racing here this weekend. This round was Metal Cloak Wild West Shootout. Mild weather with some win set the stage for a day of hard off-road racing.
First up was the Pre Runner class and only two of the trio were able to take the green. In the main Alan Jaime had to drop out with problems and that gave the victory to Team Wfo, which finished after losing the truck’s left rear wheel.
When the 4800 main began Evan Jessee was on point after taking the green. For much of the race he and Woody Rose had a nose-to-tail duel but in the end Jessee won.
Jimmy Jack had an easy run, if there is such a think in off road racing and he scored the 4500 Class victory.
Dylan Trent, did an encore of his previous race here when he led from green to checkered and won the UTV Mod class. No one even got close to him during the 6-lap event.
Next up was a combined youth race combining the UTV 570/800/900 and the UTV RS1 classes. Wyatt Blevins won the RS1 Youth class while Jordyn Skaggs was the solo 570/800/900 entry.
Only five of the nine UTV 1000 Sportsmen took the green flag as four were lost during the heat races. Up front Johney Sandoval led the charge from the start and was never headed on his way to scoring the victory.
When the UTV 1000 Pro group took the green Breckin Miramon was on point with Ben Booker giving chase. They turned the race into their own private duel as they battled for the lead.
At the finish Booker, who hails from Loomis, took the victory with Miramon in second.
After the race Booker said, “It was a crazy race, it was a battle of who gets to the finish line without breaking. There were a lot of causalities out there. At least four guys went down in the class.
“The track was good, I mean it’s an off road track so it’s got some rocks, it’s tough on the cars. Tough on all the equipment and everybody knows that.”
Then he thanked his wife and daughter as well as Jimmy Jack, who also spots for him.
There was one more combined race with two different UTV Turbo classes. One was the Sportsman and the other was the Pro class.
Chad Jessee and David Rodarte were the first over the start jump. They led the charge into the first turn but eventually Jason Sears got the Sportsman lead and claimed that victory. In the Pro class Reno driver Keith Brooks took that lead and won with John Bonanno finishing second.
When asked about the race before the awards were handed out Brooks said, “It was rough, really rough trying to get a little lead and manage the gap for the race. There were so many big holes didn’t want to puncture a tire. You know break something going through all the ruts and big holes so just kind of managed it.
“ In the last turn there’s a huge hole there. All the turns were getting pretty bad toward the end of the day. They weren’t so bad at the beginning but toward the end of the day they were getting bad.”
Then he thanked CanAm Off Road for their awesome cars, Hoosier Tires, Walker Evens Suspension, HCR Suspension, Whelan Speed, and John Reed Racing. He also thanked his wife and daughter for their support.
Finally the day ended with the big boys in the 4400 Class. On the green JP Gomez and Raul Gomez were side-by-side as they flew over the starting jump. Eventually JP took the lead while Raul rolled his car around Turn 3.
After that Ron Prindle was in second chasing Gomez. At the checkered flag JP Gomez scored the victory followed by Prindle and Dan Wyrick.
Back in his pit JP Gomez said, “It was fun, it was 100% out there for eight laps. A lot of jumping, lots of hard cornering and a lot of full throttle. At the rocks had to make a choice, either you’re going to jump it or cruise right over it. So I cruised right over it and save my tires. The course was really fast, the whole short course aspect of it so you just had to be on your game driving that.
“At Turn 1 I checked up really hard cause it was kind of up and out to the passenger side. You had to not go super fast there or you cut an edge. The second corner was kind of up and going down and a hard left, always brake checked there hard so I wouldn’t roll.”
Then he thanked his family, the whole GJR team, Mountain Enterprise, King Shocks, Method Wheels and Nitto Tires.
